So approximately how much does the DEF fluid add to yearly cost, say you drive 12-15k a year? Just looking for a general figure

DEF cost is peanuts, compared to the other costs of ownership.

 

Usage will be about 1.5 or 2% of fuel.

Using a my current 6.6L as an example.

It runs about 1100 or 1200 miles per gallon of def. 

 

Average US DEF cost is about $2.75 (according to google search).

 

15,000 miles/yr  / 1100 miles/gal  x 2.75 $/gal = $38 per year.    

 

FWIW, avg diesel price/gallon is about the same.

 

 

I never understand all the folks that say they won't buy a diesel because the cost of def is so high....

Are you talking about oil changes, insurance, truck payment.

 

I would get a 3.0 mainly for mileage, the most I tow is my garden tractor.

 

My current vehicle(Honda Pilot) does not handle towing very well.

I was referring to the costs that will be in place no matter what engine is selected. 

Financing, depreciation, insurance, tires and so on. 

 

Oil changes etc will be similar. 

Diesels will have replaceable fuel filter -- but like DEF, the cost per mile is tiny.

 

and so on.

I don't see any additional expense with the diesel, except the fuel costs more. The oil change is probably a little more, DEF cost, and fuel filters. However there are no spark plugs to change, no coil packs, no wires.

Another question, How much more does the 3.0 weigh than the 5.3/6.2? Just wondering. Part of me wants this engine over my 6.2

It might weigh less.

 

Haven't seen a weight calculator for 2020.  (Most years they have published one).  I checked the 2019 one, and didn't find LM2 info included. 

 

2020 curb weights show the LM2 crew/short/4wd weighs less than the L87 crew/short/4wd.  I think they're both gonna be 10 speeds.

It's not that this particular engine is more prone to blown head gaskets, but in general, perhaps because they see more miles, or that they are more expensive, so people are more likely to repair vs replace, but diesels seem to have blown head gaskets more frequently than gas engines, and a head gasket repair is more expensive compared to the same problem with a gas engine.

 

And, for the 3.0 engine, I believe there is that belt at the back of the engine that has to be periodically replaced every 150k, which is a fairly expensive thing to replace...

The belt drives the oil pump.

 

Nobody has replaced one yet as far as I know so we really don't know what it will cost. From a video I watched, a GM engineer said/made it sound like you disconnect the trans and slide it back a little bit and then there is a service plate to access it. Probably not ideal for some but not as bad as some are making it out to be. I've heard people trying to say the engine has to be pulled to change! Lol

    • Hi All, I operate my 2021 3500 SLT most of the time with the tailgate off and in a crate because I have a slide-in camper. However, at least once a year, I take the camper off and put the tailgate back on. Recently I installed the tailgate, but had a hard time getting the connector bail to swing to the fully latched position. The connector seems to fully seat, and everything works, but the bail doesn’t swing to fully latched position.  It swings almost there but stops and I am afraid to push it any harder.    Does anyone have any advice on cleaning or lubrication or anything else I should be doing?  i know how to properly operate the connector. During the time the tailgate and connector are off, i have a double plastic bag over the truck connector secured with rubber bands to keep it clean, but it still had some dust in it this time when I blew it out with compressed air. I didn’t want to spray it with anything other than air without doing some research. Thanks. 
    • There are a lot of spammer's that do that, quote something and add some commentary to make it seem legit, but modify the quoted text a bunch making sure when posted it's long enough to be "click to expand", and either immediately insert a spam link, or come back after some time and edit it to add the spam link.
    • Hello @jaszr2 Do you have a link for the item? I put a replacement bumper on my truck and consequently had to relocate the shutters. I studied on them a while, and figured if you left a couple key blades, you could get most of the airflow with probably no throwing codes.  
    • In the 6.6 gas thread, I added information in my fluid change thread about these gauges and temperatures. With very limited data, it so far looks like ~30 degrees difference between front and rear.
    • I know; crap pictures.   Anyway, as a finale of sorts to this thread, I had replaced both differential covers and since they had the capability of adding temperature probes, I did that. These are MaxTow analog/digital gauges with stepper motors. They'll flutter around like crazy for a moment and start at a nominal 100 degrees Fahrenheit.   I drove a 30-mile loop to the grocery store, averaging 70 MPH (as much as 80 to see if there was a quick spike in temperature. The air temperature is 102 (ambient ?). but the first pic is 7 miles into the trip. The second is getting back into the truck after leaving the store; differential temperatures dropped about three to four degrees in 15 minutes. The third pic in on the road to my house, about a mile away.   In that run, I saw a high of 150F on the rear differential, and 121F on the front. I'm sure a longer drive or towing will see higher than that, and when that happens, I can update the observations.
