Recall - Vacuum Pump May Decrease Power Brake Assist

Got my letter last week. Ignoring it for the moment. Pepper has 105 K on her now and runs like a top. I'm more inclined to just replace the pump to the superseded "improved" part... This whole recall has a fishy smell to it. 

 

Like a lifter failure where they replace the offending bank of lifters. Most guys complain about this half measure but my question is, if it is an oil pressure issue that causes the failure and you don't replace the parts that control the pressure that caused the failure is it likely to happen again? I think so.  Replace the VLOM manifold and screens and pump/jets solenoids.

 

Band-Aid on a GSW thinking IMHO.

I agree the tune is bandaid. Sounds like it is their fix just so they can say they did there part for the issue. But I will take a new pump.
So far at least more me it says all I get is a the recalibration tune. I have buddies at dealer so they get paid for it so i said fine.

And what is the down side to the recalibration? This ALTERS the original operational parameters for the ABS. If that alteration is better...it would be part of the original flash. Nothing in engineering is free. Right? So what does it take away we don't know about yet? ?

Good question. I will have to ask. I would say it is within the specs of the abs module. Maybe just more agressive settings.
I will know after lunch.

The update could also update the threshold for calling out a bad vacuum pump, perhaps catching it prior to catastrophic failure (taking out the master cylinder).

Sure, it would be great to go get a new pump for free. Design problems like this happen, and I believe they have a reasonable remedy.

So what I am told is this.
It was requested of the engineers to find a solution that was cheap,faster and would meet the minimum requirements. As some know power brakes are not mandatory. If they simply recalled all pump(also other parts) the amount of vehicles and cost was far to high and also as I am told moved them to two points. 1. Was the pump defective to the point of liability. 2. What issues legally and cost on the big picture off it all.
I am told they think this "patch" is just good college try and show of "good" PR.
Specs are they looked at the progressive abs and made it fractionally more agressive. When I asked can it handle it and what parts may wear faster for this. They said no idea and we are not positive they are going to test it all out as they would a production vehicle. But that is a different department anyways. Meaning their test truck will be updated.but that doesn't come close to every model and trim with all the climate,uses, and mods people add. So it is possible there is a issue later.
Best question....is it worth getting or not. He said get the new pump have gm pay for it and manually clean out the hard line to the booster if it has oil in it tell me and we will get you the booster,master, and all labor.
That is as far as I can say. Can't share email or doc. So i have my plan. And big brake kit is looking better then ever.

I'm going to buy the pump out of pocket and pay my shop to install it and leave my ABS alone. Should they pay? Yes! BUT brakes are more important to me than getting my way. All I needed was the TRUTH. Thanks for giving me that. Now...that wasn't so hard, was it?

OK, promised to check on this for you today and did. It appears my dealership uploaded the info to both my "Onstar" account and my GM maintenance record. Date shown is today 10/24/19. So I have to give credit where credit is due and say they're on the ball.

Great answer and good info but I have a question ......... Just how do we go about having GM pay for a new pump? With recall being as is, I just don't see them agreeing to the new pump. Am I missing something? Thanks.

 

I agree with your assumption here and my guess is they're gambling there won't be later issues, or at least not so many as to make this fix not viable. What do you think?

FYI, good luck getting a vacuum pump if the dealer doesn’t have it in stock. My truck sat at the dealer for 3 days (including outside during the Dallas Tornado event this last weekend but luckily mine was unsacathed) before they informed me they couldn’t get the part any time soon due to the strike. Your mileage may vary, obviously, but bottom line, call the svc department and confirm pump availability first.

Just had the recall (reprogram of the BCM) done on my 2014 this past Tuesday, 22nd, 11 days after this revision and no one even mentioned it. Likely they won't as it's much more economically feasible for them to address only those with the severest issues. I'm sure GM is banking on the recall fix to carry most trucks past the 10 yr/150K mile mark.

Got my letter in the mail today. Mine is a 2014 and I am at 109850 miles or so.

I have had a vacuum pump in my basket for about 6 months. I just checked the price on them and they have went up $25 since I put it in my basket. I should have bought the thing and installed it already. Ugh.

Here's my take on the recall and the special coverage on the vacuum pump.

 

The recall is kinda a bandaid so you will have some sort of power assistance to the brakes in the event you have insufficient vacuum to the booster.

 

The special coverage on the vacuum pump shows they acknowledge that they are failing too much! The original letter I received informing me about it said coverage would be extended to 6 years 72k miles. If it fails within the coverage they will replace it, the recall doesn't change that.

 

I'm a technician with the local city fleet and we have access to GM dealer level service info and bulletins. We also have a subscription to the service programming system. I ran my vin the other day and found the special coverage extended earlier this month to 10 years and 150k miles.

 

I did the reprogramming for the recall myself at work and it only took me about 20 minutes. But that only includes setting up the computer and logging into the SPS account to do it. The tech at the dealership will probably spend twice as much time finding your vehicle on the lot, bringing it into the shop, reprogramming, parking, and doing the necessary paperwork to get paid the 0.3 hours (18 minutes) the warranty time the recall bulletin allows for.

 

Warranty work is one of the main reasons I left the dealership almost 15 years ago. It was getting harder and harder to make my flat rate hours match the time I actually spent at work. The other is I was tired of only getting something around $20 a flat rate hour while they were charging something around $130.
