OEM HID Longevity..

How has everyone's trucks with OEM HID's been holding up? The reason I ask is because I was reading through a thread the other day that mentioned constantly turning them on and off greatly effects their lifespan. I have a 2018 Silverado and the headlights do get turned off multiple times a day during normal driving depending on the time of day/outside daylight (with auto lights) and also whenever I unlock the doors.

Also, can HID's be covered under the bumper-bumper warranty? Or are they considered normal wear and tear items..

They would be considered a wear item, you might have a case if you had a 14/15 SIerra with halogen projectors as they turned up the power through the BCM when people complained about performance. I had this update done to my 2015 and performance still sucked so I put in 35w Morimoto HIDs right away. Truck is over 5 years old now with the increased BCM voltage update from GM on the HID ballasts and I haven't changed one yet. You can get ballasts pretty cheap online. Wouldn't be a bad idea to order one and keep it in the glove box. I changed about 6 low beam bulbs on my 2010 Sierra in the 5 years I owned it, even had both lows go out on a drive home at night, had to use my fogs when meeting someone... Your HID's should be a lot more reliable than a traditional halogen bulb. My 2018 2500 is only a year old but no lighting issues obviously.

I've sold 1 HID bulb since the 2016 redesign on the K2 Silverados.  We move a good number of trucks here too.

They are covered under bumper to bumper but not beyond that.  The bulb they use is the D5S bulb.  Nice bulb, lot less to go wrong as the ballast is integral to the bulb.  No extra ballasts or modules mounted to fail.

Between the previous owner and me, along with 100k miles my trucks OEM bulbs are still kicking.

They are pretty pricey bulbs when it comes to replacement though.

I've wondered the same thing especially when they go off and on every time you pull into and out of the garage.  When I don't want them to come on such as starting in the garage, I have have got in the habit of turning the lights off manually by turning to accessory first, then manually turning them off then start the engine.  This way they won't come on when the truck starts.  Then once outside manually turn back on so the DRL's work.   Then when pulling into the garage (during the day) I manually turn them off before going in.   After a while it just becomes a bit now I don't even think about.   Maybe it's all for nothing but makes me feel like I'm doing something good for the truck at least.

I've read about this over on HID planet it seems like its a good practice.   Ive even turned off the lights from coming on with unlocking.   Only parking lights turn on now when unlocking.

Idk if you have a Canadian model or not, but mine during daytime will only illuminate the LED strip under each headlight on my 2017. The main bulbs are only on when the green light in the dash comes on.

Regardless, every 2 years I put new ones in. I hate driving down the road at night and seeing that one of my eyes is out.

The HIDs should last the life of the car. I got a 12 CTSV and a 12 MDX and both still work fine.

A buddy of mine has a 2013 Escalade and he just had to replace both headlights. He said it cost $700 .

I'm not even sure what kind of lights they are but they are way brighter than my Silverados
