Do wider (not taller tires) kill mpg?

I think Toyo also makes a p-rated AT tire in 305/55r20.  Discount doesnt show it on their website but toyo does

Discount Tire can get anything you want. Me, personally, I won’t ever buy another Nitto or Toyo (being they’re sister companies) because of their sipping especially. KO2’s are looking to stay as my preferred tire.

Do yall think I would have better mpg woth bfg ko2s in 275/60r20?  That is my stock size but heavier.  I know it will still be worse than stock but hopefully not this bad

You’ll love the KO2’s

It's the width! I went up about 3/4 " width and 2 inches taller. The width is what kills the MPG. That's why I stuck with a slightly wider tire without overdoing it. OK by me because I don't like the wide look anyways.

I only run high end tires as my experiences with lower cost tires are no better than stock oem tires.

? Cost most certainly doesn't equal superior performance...

No, they are much heavier than a P-rated you currently have and compared to a stock tire, plus they are very aggressive for an AT.

Height and width both ruin mpg. Height puts the truck further in the air and width increases drag and rolling resistance. Usually the larger tire is going to be heavier too, especially when going to an E-rated tire.

If you don't off road much look at something with a more moderate tread and stick P-rated. Unless you are just going for looks the more aggressive tires perform worse in regular driving duties (handle worse, stop worse, accelerate worse, etc). Plus they won't get as loud over time, something I am getting tired of currently at 40k on mine.

I am not a fan of the BFG tires, probably my least favorite in terms of being over-rated at the most premium price. I see plenty of comments when searching about hydro-planning issues in part because of the C-shaped tread and that they perform below average in wet/cold weather; they are very heavy which is good for tire toughness off road but horrible for on road ride and performance. All in all they are above average off road and below on road though still out performed by other brands at a more reasonable price, they do look the coolest though if that is something?

If you want something with some looks but better all around performance for the on the road where most everyone spends nearly all their time but not be left high and dry when the pavement ends then check out tires like the Bridgestone Dueler Revo 3, Continental Terrain Contacts or Cooper AT3 4s. I am stepping back some to a mild aggressive tire from an aggressive AT because I want some better road manners where I spend most of my time but still want to be able to tackle trails out west, hoping to get a little mpg back as well with a more modest tread.

I went with the new Yokohama X-AT's and absolutely love them. Very agressive looking sidewall with a slightly more agressive tread pattern than an A/T. They are in between an
A/T and a M/T. And they make zero road noise. I don't know how Yokohama pulled that off but they did. What they advertise is not hype. They are exactly what they are advertised as! On road performance is just like a highway tire as well. Awesome in the rain! And to top it off they have a 45K mile treadwear warranty. I returned a set of KO2's and exchanged them for the X-AT's. These will be my goto tires from now on. Not much info available online because they are a brand new line of tire. I'm incredibly happy I went with them. They are fantastic! These are one of those products that you wish everyone would try.

I don't totally agree with that. Of all the tires I've ever owned (and it's been lots of them), the only ones that have performed above and beyond have been the ones that cost alot. Cheap tires do not perform like higher cost tires. Pretty much most things in life that you buy have a cost/quality ratio. They don't make cheap stuff just because they want to be nice to you so you can save money. That's reality!

I'd also like to add on a side note again:

Width is what kills mpg! Keep a narrower tire and you'll be ok. My stock tires were like 32 lbs. , my Yokohama X-AT's are like 62 lbs. 3/4" wider & 2" taller than stock tires and I've lost about 2 mpg. And that's also adding a lift kit to my truck. Plenty of websites talk about this and lots of real world scientific data has been posted.

You’re absolutely correct, I’ve owned a great many trucks and SUVs, only once did I try a lower cost Bridgestone AT Tire and only because of hype per cost and it was garbage. The whole point for having an AT tire imo is for those that sometimes or not often enough go OffRoad BUT you just never know and I’ve owned countless of BFG KO’s in the past that completely surpassed anything in the market.

Most recently, I fell for the hype on the Nitto Ridge Grapplers and was completely disappointed at 16k miles as they slipped on wet pavement due to their sipping disappearing due to the sipping not going all the way through the lugs. KO2’s have sipping that goes straight through the lugs.

Nitto Ridge Grapplers with 16k miles, notice the sipping has closed off not allowing water to leave the tire causing hydroplaning. Also, the tires started getting louder too. 49fb4b9e09472f8dab585c8fb59446a0.jpg.

Here’s the BFG KO2’s, look at their sipes

In my experience, those that tend to complain about higher end tires need to do so as it makes them feel better boasting about their lower cost tires. Hey, if it works for you great, I don’t buy junk. Let’s not forget, BFGOODRICH is owned by the highest rated tire manufacturer on the planet, MICHELIN and everything they touch turns to gold. I’ve shown real world proof and the majority of KO2’s slipping is due to the rear end of trucks being so light, I’ve even added sand bags with brand new Michelin’s on my truck which quickly fixed the problem. It’s true, in life, you get what you pay for. There’s been a study done some years back that price equates to quality and that’s why tires have gone up in price, it’s sneaky, I’ll just stick to what’s always worked for me and recommend them too.

Can't argue with that! I have owned BF's in the past and they were fine. In the end, I just really wanted something different. But something different from a brand I know. The Nitto fascination is interesting. I really believe that they sell so well because people follow trends. Everytime I stop for gas and another lifted truck is there, most of the time they have Nitto. I'm assuming that people see them everywhere and expect that they are great so they buy them as well. I'm sure dealers push them like crazy too.

Correct, I’ve actually heard people at the tire store bring it up as it’s the new Nittos lmao, no where near but it was hype. The Discount Tire manager has them on his truck for about 8 months then switched to KO2’s as well due to ride quality issues and reluctant to inform me as to why. In the end, I’m running what I’ve grown up with and have never been let down by any of the past KO’s. I’ve already noticed a better ride quality too. In the end, get whatever makes you happy, I buy new tires every other year so it does get much more costly versus the average person but then again, I’m not your average consumer [emoji6]

I’ve heard great things about the Yokohama AT and Bridgestone Dueler Revo as well.

But you did go taller factory shows to be a 275/50r22 you went to 305/55r22 so you went wider and taller is you wanted to keep the same height for every 10mm in width you go up you do down 5mm in profile. So your 30mm wider and your taller. The Tire height difference is 2.38” sidewall height is 1.19” width is 1.18”

of course they do, more resistence

anything heavier bigger, taller, wider will kill MPG.....just common sense
