Hi all,

 

Trying to keep this short, my 2016 All terrain was stolen so I am in the market for a new truck. I am still hesitant on getting another GM truck due to them being the number one stolen truck from the lists I have seen but it is really difficult to find something with the tech and mileage these trucks offer. So I have been looking around on the forums and since the truck is new i have not seen much for sticky threads related to the issues I have questions on.

 

Coming from a 2014 & 2016 AT 6 speed and 8 speed 5.3 my questions are below as both trucks experienced the same issues.

 

Has anyone with the 10 speed mated to the 5.3 with decent miles experienced any of the low gear hard shifts and throttle hesitations that a lot of us (everyone i know personally with this truck) have experienced with the 6 & 8 speed transmissions. Trying to understand if this issue has been resolved with the 10 speed.

 

Last question is more specific to the new platform in general, miles not specific but the more the better. Are the new trucks still experiencing the hwy speed vibration issues that a good amount of people experienced on the 2014-2018 models. I didnt particularly notice it on my 2014 AT but I did some on my 2016. Last I heard is GM was saying it was due to an extremely stiff frame and road harmonics so there really was no fix.

2019 5.3 only came with 8 speed transmissions.  Not many 2020 5.3 10 speeds in the wild but there are some.  New T1's don't have the Chevy shake like the previous versions.

 I believe the silverado 2020 10 speed 5.3 only comes in the LT TB. 

 

I have a 5.3 8 speed and recently drove a 6.2 10 speed and it felt great. 

 

the Sierra you can purchase that configuration in a SLE.

Dont make your decision on whats the most likely truck to be stolen, they all can be stolen. Thats what insurance is for :)

I dont know the answers to your questions since i drive a 2014 but... thats what warranty is for lol

Thanks for the info, i knew you could get the 5.3 in the 10 speed but didnt realize that wasnt the case till just recently so reviews are limited if any.

I know GM says the low gear transmission clunk is normal its just that when you pay what we pay for these trucks I plan on keeping it for a long time. The clunk in the transmission does not give me confidence in the longevity department. If the new 10 speed mated to the 5.3 does not have any of this then there is a good chance I pick up another GMC.

I guess it depends upon what list you are looking at.  Some show Dodge, some show Ford, some show GM.

2020 GMC AT4 5.3 10 speed here.  Have just over 2k miles on it.  The only hesitation I feel is if I’m light on the throttle, the shift from first to second has a “soft lag”.   If I give her some gas off the line it shifts quicker, but definitely no clunk.  After that, the shifts are nearly imperceptible.  At least until the pressure control solenoid went for third gear on the highway and I had to have the truck flat bedded to the stealer.   Waited a week for a valve body replacement.   Got the truck back two days ago, seems ok, but is in “relearn” mode.   I have to train it all over again.  
 

Granted, I haven’t heard of many, if at all, issues with the 10 speed, hoping mine was just a fluke. Love the truck otherwise, coming from a 2014 SLT.  The biggest difference is the headlights actually light up the road!  ?

Yeah this is the issue I have with these trucks. both my 14 and 16 started out smooth as butter but as miles were put on the hard shift from 1 to 2 showed up and progressively got worse. Sometimes to the point at low speeds in say a parking lot the shift was so hard it was as if someone rear ended the truck. Non of the GM truck/suv products I have driven in that are 2013 and earlier showed sings of this clunk. It just doesnt speak longevity to me but i am not a mechanical engineer so I cant say one way or the other on that.

So I'll chime in my 2c worth of experience...  I own a 2019 HC with the 5.3L and the 8 speed... Yes, on cold starts I notice a hard shift or two but no shaking or any issue trans wise.  My truck has been at the dealer for almost 2 months and the past month I've been driving a 2020 trail boss with the 5.3L and 10 Speed.  The 10speed is very smooth compared to the miles I've driven on mine.  Like a noticeable difference when I go to launch the vehicle.  The MPG is a little less but it's also a few inches taller than my truck and has different wheels and tires.  Overall I've been very happy with the performance of the TB with the 10 speed...

I have under a 1000 miles on my 2020 Sierra with the 5.3 10 speed and so far it is the smoothest best riding truck I've ever been in or owned. I did a lot of research and it seems that these new trucks are pretty good so far with minimal complaints, but nothing is perfect. I had a 2016 Silverado before this and I had the vibration on the highway really bad which is what ultimately made me trade it in. I've not heard of anyone having that issue with these newer ones.

2 months and 1700 miles on my 5.3/10. I looked at the 10 speed a little before making my decision. It was a collaboration between GM and Ford. The 1st ones were put into GM camaros around the 17MY so it's not a brand new transmission. It's just new for the truck world. About a week before I got my 20 SLT. I took my wife's car to the Chevy dealer for service. I asked the service writer if he knew of the problems with the 8 speed. His exact words to me were yes that's why I have a 6 speed in my Tahoe. I didn't go into detail with him but, that made my mind up of which truck I was getting. My 10 speed has been smooth as butter so far. It shifts good when you get down on it from a stop like I would expect. Once you get going the shifts are not even noticeable. On the road the down shift to pass or speed up is like it's not even there. The 10 speed was only offered in the 4x4 versions when mine was built 9/19. It was my only choice for the 10 speed trans.  I really didn't need the 4WD. Maybe they have changed that by now.

All the clunks and herky jerky shifting is a thing of the past with the new 10 speed. Just took delivery of my 2020 duramax, it’s like night and day compared to my 2018 8 speed.

    • That makes sense, and I think you are describing the real product problem. Capturing data is the easy part. If the owner or technician has to manually dig through five minutes of millisecond-level logs, the product has already failed. The device would be at the ECM harness, not at the OBD port, so I agree that data retrieval and event marking need to be thought through carefully. The way I am thinking about the architecture is: The recorder itself should not depend on a phone, app, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or cloud connection to capture the event. It should always keep a local rolling buffer and lock the event locally. A button, phone app, or small cabin device would only act as an event marker. If the driver feels a stumble and presses the button 10–30 seconds later, the pre-buffer has to already contain the useful data. For data retrieval, the practical options would be a sealed service USB lead, Wi-Fi download, or a phone/cabin companion device. I would not expect the owner to remove the ECM-side module or work with raw files directly. The cloud or AI side would be for interpretation, not for capturing the event. The truck may have no connection when the issue happens, so the evidence has to be saved locally first. After that, cloud processing could help decode the data, compare it against baselines, and generate a readable report. For the first version, I would keep the automatic triggers conservative and objective: driver event marker bus-off error passive voltage drop / brownout device reset FIFO or queue overflow a normally periodic message disappearing side-to-side communication mismatch, if the topology supports that For “learning normal,” I agree with your point, but I would not want to overclaim it as automatic root-cause diagnosis at first. A realistic first step would be learned baseline comparison for that specific vehicle and operating condition. For example, a value would only be compared against similar conditions: RPM range load / MAP throttle position gear / vehicle speed coolant and oil temperature battery voltage AFM/DFM state, if decoded and validated Then the report could flag things like: this periodic message disappeared compared with its normal timing this value deviated from this vehicle’s normal range under similar conditions the same abnormal pattern repeated after the same type of event the anomaly occurred together with voltage, oil-pressure, misfire, or communication changes But I would still call that “abnormal pattern detected,” not “replace this part,” unless there is enough validated repair data behind it. So the intended product would not be “here is a huge log.” It would need to be an event package: what triggered the capture how much pre/post data was preserved what changed before and after the event whether the device itself reset, overflowed, or saw a bus error selected graphs around the event raw data only as supporting evidence From your perspective, what would make this kind of report useful instead of just another datalog? For example: What are the top 5 parameters or events you would want highlighted first? Would you trust a learned baseline for that specific vehicle, or would you prefer fixed thresholds? How much false-positive flagging would be acceptable before you stopped looking at the reports? What would a one-page report need to show for an independent shop to take it seriously? For misfire, AFM/DFM, oil pressure, or U-code complaints, what would you want the tool to flag automatically?
