So did i read correctly that gm is back peddling on what models can now be equipped with the 10 speed and have essentially stripped it from any lower tier model and gone back to the 8 speed? Do they have a shortage issue with the 10 speed or is this GM just being GM and continuing to decontent their truck lines? I have heard that even ordered models with the 10 speed have been switched with a minor credit of like 250 dollars on the sticker and given the 8 speed trans?

Or how about this: I buy a crew cab with the short bed that meets all my needs by allowing me to transport the stuff I need the bed for and my family so my kids and I can be comfortable with having more room when they are in my vehicle?

I dont need to haul ply wood, I dont have dirt bikes, I dont sleep in the bed of my truck, but I do haul stuff that is too tall to fit in an SUV. I'm not wrong for using a truck the way I want to.

Not sure why it is so difficult to understand that people have different needs than you and aren't under utilizing their truck for using it the way they need.

Agreed!  Infact, I don't typically haul anything in my truck other than a couple of beach cruisers, luggage, snowboards, and maybe the grocery bags from a weekend shopping trip.

I do have a Bedrug, which makes the back nice an cozy and I have slept back there.  I would guess that if you did sleep in the bed, you wouldn't close the tailgate anyways, giving ample room no matter how tall you are.

My crew cab short bed has a small lift and is less of a work-truck and more of a fun-truck.

I was hoping that GM would add the rear seat entertainment as an option so, like the Tahoe/Yukon/Subburban/Escalade, so that kids could have something to watch on long trips.  Bummer...

I don't know about how orders are being handled, but the first part is correct. GM is now optioning certain 2020 5.3 DFM Silverados with the 8L90. For isntance, 4x4 High Country now gets the 8L90, while earlier models have the 10L90. They still have both options on the B&P configurator. The LT Trail Boss 5.3 DFM still gets the 10L90.

Same is true with Sierra. SLE, SLT, AT4 and Denali with the 5.3 DFM engine now have the 8L90 in lieu of the 10L90 on earlier 2020 models.

6.2 and 3.0 Diesel still get the 10L90.

Going backwards seems to be a common theme with GM today. The 8 speed is widely regarded as a absolute turd of a slop box so it would make sense i guess to the idiots in Detroit to now stick it in all the lower tier optioned trucks.

Here's the current build options for GMC, funniest part, the Denali you get a $5 discount (Five Dollars) to take the 8 Speed, no way in hell, but at least you can still order the Elevation, SLT, AT4 and Denali with a 10 Speed in the 5.3, 6.2 and 3.0D engines.

Hey five dollar footlong time?? who wouldn't choose a subway sandwich over the ten speed trans??? I know fanboys you don't need those two extra gears while ford essentially shoves it in nearly every model they have including the 4 poppers! It has been widely stated here how much better the 10 speed has been over the 8! Wonder if this is a issue of it being much easier and cheaper to build or gm just has a surplus of 8 speeds they need to get rid of, in either case it is a poor decision regardless of whatever excuse is given, like i said two post up going backwards!

As I understand it, it was a production constraint through the end of the 2020 model year...which is just about over anyway.

The supply issue is not the trans itself, but something in the driveline paired with the 10 speed. I would assume the driveshaft is a different length than the 8 speed truck, so maybe that is it.

I like beating up on GM for their cheapness as much as anyone but I don’t think this was intentional.

This could very well be it but wouldn't Ford also have the same issue then ? I have no facts , just asking!

The thing that helps Ford is that they run the 10 speed in just about everything. Simplifies production with their suppliers and how they order parts.

GM, in all their wisdom has 3 different transmissions. If they underestimated the demand for the 10 speed trucks...they could very well be in a position where they do not have enough 10 speed driveshafts, but plenty of 8 speed shafts. In that case, the first ones to get a downgrade would be those that made do with the 8 speed last year.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s still their fault, but I just don’t think they are trying to stick it to anyone...in this instance. I guess we will see if things go back to normal for 2021 like they said they will.

Well i have heard and i cannot confirm it, but believe it with this company, but customer orders that were specced with the ten speed were then defaulted to the 8 automatically and this 5 dollar credit was then given to the customer. If true imagine waiting 6 weeks for a ordered truck to only have it come with the 8 speed when you wanted the 10. If they have a shortage of drive shafts or parts for the ten speed then you make more, this is not rocket science and reverting customer orders should of never been an option if that is what they are doing.

its $200 on other models but $5 on Denali, lol

yeah that sounds crazy not to just build more shafts or parts......but what to do with 100,000 8 speed trannys laying around,

The 8 speed is still going to be the standard transmission in like half the trims, it’s not like they are ditching it and trying to dump off the remaining units.

AAM used to make the driveshafts, not sure if they still do. Either way when you depend on a supplier and they can’t deliver, not much you can do with all the COVID crap putting everyone way behind.

No way in hell I’d take delivery of one of them switcharoo trucks but realistically not many people buy 5.3 Denalis or HCs anyway. You’re talking what, a few hundred trucks at most? Seems kinda overblown.
