Hey everyone,

 

I picked up a 202 Trail Boss 5.3 6-Speed not too long ago. I doing some research on the 5.3l engine and 6 speed transmission before buying the Silverado and read good things about the reliability.


I wanted to see what your experience is with your Silverado or Sierra. What issues have you had?

You shouldn’t have much to worry about, it’s a solid combo. Plus, since you have the Custom trim there’s a lot less gadgets to wrong. No leaky rear window either.

I had a 2014 GMC SLE Z71 crew cab pickup with the 5.3l (with AFM) and 6-speed.  I had no problems with reliability, but there were a few annoyances with the overall drivetrain:

 

1)  It seemed like the AFM became much more aggressive over time, even switching to 4-cylinder mode going up hills, etc.  I ended up having to buy a Range Technologies box that I put on an OBD-II extension cable with a power switch to allow me to kill AFM during low speed limit stretches of road, otherwise it would continually switch between lugging (V4) and running smoothly (V8).

 

2) The 6-speed really didn't like to downshift unless you pretty much had it near the floor, then it would take off for the moon.  There is a big hill near our house, and the truck would slow to a crawl going up the hill because it wouldn't downshift.  I would keep pushing down on the gas pedal until it would finally shift.  If the road were damp in any way, the rear end would break loose every time.  My wife always thought I was being an @xx, but I wasn't trying.  The transmission also went through a bad clunking phase for a while.

 

I loved the looks of the '14, but I ended up trading it on a 2020 SLT with 5.3L (DFM) and 10-speed transmission.  The difference is night-and-day.  The 10-speed shifts smoothly and the DFM is definitely not as noticeable after 11k miles.  However, I did put 67k miles on the 2014 with basically no trouble whatsoever other than a few squeaks and rattles.  Hopefully, they have improved the drivetrain calibration since 2014, but you should (hopefully) be fine on reliability.  Just keep up with the maintenance, especially the oil changes.

Its gonna fall apart in 6 months. You never should have bought it. Why didn't you read the forums before you purchased. Put a for sale sign in it, and take your lose like a man.

i think the 5.3 and 6 spd is a great option ... love mine ....no issues with my 15 or 19

Thanks for the responses. I took it on a long road trip and it’s an awesome vehicle for long drives. I bought the oil and filter and will be doing the oil change this weekend. Next up is towing our travel trailer with it.

Overall, I've been happy with my 2013 Silverado with that combo, but I did have the engine replaced at 96000 miles this past March. Burnt up 2 valves and broke a rocker on one side, the garage doing the repair found signs of a lubrication problem. With the AFM, the idea is that the entire bank needs to be replaced, and given the fear of lubrication problems and the potential for more damage (the rocker had dropped down) I opted for the extra $1000-1500 cost to install a new crate motor. Looking back, I had a check engine light for a faulty oil pressure sensor about a year prior. The garage I took it to for the code read told me that the sensors fail with a low reading so that as long as I was showing pressure, it was fine to run for the short term. I was showing 30PSI so I ran it for about 2-3 weeks before I could get it in. My thought is that this played a role in the lubrication problem. With this said, I wouldn't hold this against that engine/transmission combo, more based on other factors,

Consumer Reports predicts "poor reliability" for the Silverado/Sierra. But if you dig into the recent trouble spots, it's mostly around non-critical items, such as in-car electronics. Otherwise, only time will tell as to it's long-term reliability. Looking at the history, it's no Toyota, but not terrible. Room for improvement, but nothing I'm going to worry about.

You can always have a part fail. More frequent fluid changes are the way to go IMO due to the complexity of the design.

It's the "Most dependable, longest lasting truck on the road"... what's to wonder here? ?? ?? 

 

 

Kidding aside, the GM 5.3L is one helluva proven engine. They really do run and run and run. 

 

I owned a 2007 5.3L 1500, put 100K miles on it over 10 years (not extravagant), and I don't think I spent even $500 on that truck outside of routine maintenance. It was nearly perfect for a vehicle.

My brother in law routinely has put at least 300K miles on GM trucks and SUVS. At 61 he obviously hasn’t had many. I listed them before. He’s the reason I felt comfortable buying a used Avalanche. He just bought a SUV with cylinder deactivation. That could be a game changer we’ll see.

Treat it for what it is not what you wish it was.

Maintain it better than you think you need to.

Use products better than required.

Every truck has issues. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. No one is perfect especially when your making/selling 60/70/80K trucks a month.

    • probably won't get a response from that user, as they haven't returned to the site since making that one post.  users don't (at least I don't, and I haven't seen any setting which would notify me via say, email) get any notification other than going to this site, and checking if they got a response on their thread...
    • Thanks - I wasn't quite caffeinated this morning. 2:1 makes sense, turning the crankshaft 360 degrees will turn the cam 180 degrees, and had I done that, the cam's dot would be at 6 and the crank's at 12 again.   I went ahead and took the sprocket off anyway, aligned everything dot-to-dot including the balance shaft just for s&g. I'm glad I did because I discovered no Loctite on the timing sprocket bolts. Maybe it's not required, but at only 20 ft-lb torque spec, those bolts aren't in there very tight. Cleaned and reassembled with some thread locker and torqued.   A general observation: Less is more with RTV. If a little doesn't stop a leak, a LOT probably won't, either. RTV is thinly veiled revenge, in a tube...      
    • The timing marks are ok, that is #1, you can turn it over until they line up and it won't change anything, the crankshaft turns twice for every camshaft revolution, I have always set up SB Chevs as your pic shows using a straight edge
    • Someone's been here before.... There is a receipt for a 3-piece timing set, purchased earlier this year.   Is this picture something, or, nothing?   I have the timing cover off and my crank is perfectly TDC and the keyed gear's locating mark is dead on 12 o'clock.   The cam gear locating mark is also at 12 o'clock. Now, I'm not an expert, but all the install guides say the two locating marks should meet and be perfectly aligned when installing a timing set. The mark on the crank should be dead on 12:00 and the cam gear's mark should be dead on 6:00, and both marks should be perfectly vertically aligned.   I believe the timing gear is keyed or has a dowel that ensures it can only be installed on the cam in one position, so I have to believe the cam is out of phase somehow. At the very least, with a triangular bolt pattern, it can only be installed in one of 3 different positions.   Before I pulled the front cover, the truck was running alright, no service engine soon lights except an occasional P0172 / rich condition. Timing -16 timing at idle (should be +16), and total -35% fuel trim, two conditions I haven't been able to figure out.   In related news, my injector tested pretty well, wasn't leaking, but I had it rebuilt anyway, and it's on it's way back to me.         Along with this discovery, the good and bad:   Good: The oil pan seal appears undamaged.   Bad: -The timing cover has been reused, and the positioning dowels have been broken. That could explain some of the leaking. -Some kind of white paste or grease was used to try to seal the oil pan seal and timing cover (since wiped off..). -Then, someone globbed silicone all over the front of the cover and also buried the ckp sensor in it. But, they didn't put any inside the cover or use RTV to try to seal the oil pan seal with the timing cover (good).
    • The guy that owns K&P filters last I checked in with him has over 300,000 miles on his Dodge base Hemi using his own 35 micron absolute stainless mesh filter from its first oil change.    The GM study I've posted a dozen times shows the relationship in engine life based in multiples of base units, not miles or years. That is the base unit is the number of miles the motor ran using the reference filter efficiency.    The above two paragraphs dismantle anecdotal arguments IF one changes oil often enough to prevent particle formation and the motor is in otherwise good shape. That is not full of silica (no air filter) or suffering a metallurgical issue that is not part of the lubrication discussion. Poor heat treat in example.   Data from UOA's I've reviewed from more than a few engines can show remarkably broad variations in oil cleanliness using the exact same filter over the course of an engines life.     Lastly there is the common sense of it. Wear debris WILL circulate the engine BEFORE it ever sees a filter in route to that filter and WILL harm the pump which NEVER sees filtered oil.    Alpha question then becomes, given the facts, how long do you believe is a reasonable service life from a vehicle you are certain you will not pass down? That is the junk yard will be it's resting place when you're done with it? (the moral issue most don't care about).    Omega question is then how diligent are you prepared to be in general mechanical, air & oil maintenance? Preventing particulates and keeping them sufficiently dilute; preventing the precursors from generation, amalgamation and precipitation.    If I get a good look at the engine bay of a vehicle I have a fair idea of the owners commitment to the inside of the power train. That 30 micron WIX is still more efficient than a sieve.
