I've been debating this as well, but am leaning towards the simple GM 2in leveling kit my dealership sells.  I, and I may be the only one ever, am happy so far with the ranch shocks that came on my 2020 Elevation/X31 package.
 
I have read so much back and forth on the UCAs, angles, etc.  The GM techs indicate that I don't need anything beyond the kit, the install, and the alignment.  The people who seem to have issues with the leveling kits go above 2in, or already have 2in, and go 2 more, correct?
 
If I want to be safe, am I best just leaving it alone if I don't want to spend the money of the 5100s plus install, etc.?

What kit? I know they sell the 2in TB/AT4 suspension kit. But haven't heard of a level kit

I am looking for Bilstein front shocks (part#: 24-293297) that look like "out of stock/back order"... Although Bilstein is so papular, why is it so difficulty to buy them?  Where can I buy them?

if you want to go 2" it wont matter what kit gets you there (2" is 2").....you can buy eibach or bilstein kit and they will mimick the gm kit and they are cheaper and better quality.....the gm kit gets you longer CV axles (they do this becasue they didnt drop the differential in TB i believe )....but yeah 2" is pretty much benchmark where you can use stock componets and not worry too much.....aftermarket UCA will be stronger and have better articulation but not needed if just doing normal stuff light offroad

 

gm kit will run you $1000-1200 plus labor $500-700 ( can buy them on ebay for cheaper)

other 2 kits are probably under $1000 with labor 

king or fox kit is around $3500 installed

 

 Eibach and Bilstein shocks are better quality than the ranchos

however the ranchos dont ride bad and monotubes are better than the twin tubes....

 

king, fox, icon, make really nice kits but obviously $$$$

 

your truck will be safe either way.....its not a big deal

I just installed Bilstein 6112s up front with Icon tubular UCAs and Bilstein 5160s in the rear.  I already had the "Trailboss" 2" lift so I have the longer axles...the Bilsteins I bought were for TB/AT4 and I set the front to 1.2" height to level it.  I'm happy as a pig in slop.  Ride and handling is great.

Thanks so much for the insight on this!  When I said 2" "kit", I was referring to the basic 2in block for the front.  I WISH I could get a real kit for $500 installed.  With that said, based on your comment above, since it's still just 2in, but does not add or remove any parts but the block, all should still be good?

i thought you were doing susension lift.....i am not a fan of spacers but yeah they work and if your mall crawling wont hurt anything.....you do lose travel so if you hit anything remotelty rough it will bottom out prematurely

 

you can get eibach front shocks or bilsteins for $500 installed.....the fronts anyway or pretty close to that......dealers are crazy expensive usually in labor cost

 

ask lapoolboy.....he went from spacers, to gm kit to what he has now i believe so he would be good source on difference between. them in newer trucks.....ill never do another spacer kit again, they ride like ****** imo

can you tell the difference now?......i remember on your first kit you said if felt about the same, but now you had it done several different ways....

Yes, cutting the droop stops off helped.  With the lift before, the stock arms were getting into the stops with minimal down-travel. There is no more "jarring" now and more articulation.

Pretty nice setup you have now....so you just got 6112 made for TB and you are at like 3.2 up front now ......what did they run you $?....I think those are rebuildable as well....might even have increased your travel with those....I know the kings give another inch or so on theirs...probably others as well

 

The bilsteins and icons use same digressive valving so should feel somewhat familiar if you decide to change dtl...

That's correct.  The 6112 pair with springs was $730.  The rear 5160s were $410 for the pair.  I am at 3.2" up front with 2" blocks in the rear.  I spoke to Bilstein several times and they said their testing showed 3.2" was maximum safe height with TB axles.  I think they are a smidge more travel than stock Ranchos, I'm taking advantage of that now with the Icon UCAs and no droop stops.  My only gripe with the setup is the greasing of the UCA bushings....I can't get a wrench on the bolts to loosen them because the springs take up the whole coil bucket.  ?  Pumping grease to them without loosening is a no-no, but I don't really feel like tearing the front end down to grease bushings!  So, Icon coilovers probably going on order soon! They aren't as large diameter and I can get to the bolts.  

 

Final thing I want to do is try to fit some Ridge Grappler 35x11.5x20 on there.  I have the stock size 275/60R20 Ridge Grapplers on it now and they look puny.

I liked the Ranchos on my Z71 A LOT, they absorbed imperfections on and off the road remarkably well.  My problem was they didn't last 20K miles before the front end would float like a pontoon boat over every rise or swell on the roadway and would continue to bounce 2-3 times before settling down.  If it wasn't for that, and that fact that the Eibach kit came with new springs as well, I would have purchased the GM kit.  Holding the shocks side by side though, one looks like a child's toy while the other looks like a real, get it done, shock. 

 

Just remember, whatever you would pay to a dealership for a desired component or system, you can usually find a MUCH better equivalent for cheaper elsewhere.

I went a similar route on my at4 but different components. Bilstein 5160 rear

bilstien 5100 front set to middle .55”

motofab 1” lower spacer

cognito upper control arms

seems to work well. Didn’t want to compress the spring to much so that why I decided on the lower spacers. This lifted me 1.75” and gave me a 1/4” of rake. I cut the droop stops off for the new UCAs. Ball joint angle is good and tire clearance with stock wheels is plenty. CV angle is no better off but not the worse I’ve seen.

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
    • Can it still be Assembled II?   Viscosity on the decline by various means. Heat on the rise making that worse. Engine RPM in the tank. Smaller motors with more boost trying to emulate an electric motor. Full torque, zero rpm. Then we will triple the OCI. Argh.    But wait....there is more. LSPI has pushed a shift from Ca to Mg and as that cost more PLUS the run to lower sulfur compounds the TBN is moving in the wrong direction for the increased OCI's demanded.    That not being enough to placate a demand for a parameter they can't measure the other sulfur bearing compounds are also under attack. That would be zinc and phosphorus sulfonate compounds. To some degree those are being replaced with boron esters and others, i.e. titanium ect. All of which have shorter service lives. And there there is the "Secrete Sauce" marketing for AW adds that 'Can't be detected by UOA's" but trust me because I (the blenders) never ever lie.    Spoiler alert; ALL additives are sacrificial! Smaller amounts of the old blended with less robust versions of the new do not equal longer service lives. So what are the blenders recommending? Wait for it.......   MOVING THE GOAL POSTS! OMG      Let's declare the long standing TAN/TBN crossover irrelevant and tell people that soot is a great 'graphite' based lubricant which can aid tribo films. Wait, what? Let's declare that the standards used for oxidation and nitration were to conservative and can be expanded. Let's tell them that because GDI fuel dilution, although being a VISCOSITY KILLER and an acid generator is actually okay because we have better base oils that limit viscosity failure limits. (Said knowing this is measured in fractions of a centipoise and in bases not commonly used in shelf oils)   Lying from the heart is not just the new normal but we have a public, a very young public, that is so ignorant of the facts and so sure of their "RESEARCH" into AI driven models base in regurgitated  instead of scientific research based unvarnished, peer reviewed FACTS that the incoming guard is loosing their grip on reality and the OEM's are tickled pink while the blends bend the knee.    You have an ever limited set of tools to work with. And sooner or later those will be taken from you as the API and the EPA strangle the last remaining fluids from the system. What you have left is your wits. If you care to use them.    At some point in the very near future it will not longer be possible to do "What is best for the machine", and be replaced with "The best you have access too". You WILL be rewarded with half the life and twice the cost. That isn't that hard to predict.         
    • I trust you saw the other comment where he knew what he was talking about !. Yes, these darned newer vehicles with all their so smart they are stupid technology, goes and drains the battery down. As you might see my other comment, I installed a Noco 5 battery tender under the hood and at this point still have the cord routed so I have to lift the hood and then plug it in but am typically parked in a garage or a shed so its not risking the engine hood in the wind. That way I am assured or hopefully so of not finding I have a battery drawn down and can't even start the truck and that also damages the battery to draw it down too far. 
    • I guess no surprise my guesses were wrong !, at least now I know if I ever happen to see it grayed out in my own truck as to what is going on.    I never happened to catch my truck with it grayed out, it seemed every time I would test to see if there was an update it never found anything and yet more than once I would check to see if there was an update and there was nothing, then a day later or even that same morning I would drive to town and after more than one engine shut down in town as I did my errands it would pop up that there is an update now ready to install and the only place I have a connection to the internet is at home by wifi so its not as if it grabbed the download while driving. I don't trust these new vehicles due to all the crap they can decide to do while sitting for some days not running and run the battery down so most of the time if I know the truck will sit for a few days I plug in the battery tender I have mounted under the hood and so the only time the truck must have downloaded software was when it was sitting in the garage where the signal is awful but I have that tender plugged in and somehow it managed to download it. I honestly detest all this crap, way to easy to leave a person stranded.    Since I don't trust any of it I don't do the install of the already downloaded software until I get home and sometimes have even sat in the truck to watch what its doing as its going through the process to its conclusion as its not like it is set up that it will tell you the next time you fire up the engine that the update that was initialed actually installed or installed properly. Yes I can go into the updates and see the list. After I go through the install where I feel its safe to do so in case it breaks down as a result, I will plug in the battery tender after the fact to recharge as I don't know how much power its taking just to do the install and that can take a while for it to install. 
    • Thanks for the reply. All settings were correct and the engine was off, as it was supposed to be. It turned out to be something simple. I took a drive for about an hour. I must have had a low battery without knowing it. The voltage gauge on the display looked ok. At the end of my drive, I shut off the engine and the update prompt came up and it updated normally. It’s ironic because one of the features of the update is a reduction of battery drain.
