Hi All,

 

I currently have a 2020 GMC Sierra SLE 2WD 2.7L with the aFe power package (aka all products for the 2.7L).

 

I love my engine and truck, but regret not getting the 4WD variant. I only go off-pavement when hunting and light camping. 

 

I wanted to see how off-roading with only 4WD Hi and the G80 locker.

I have a 2019 Silverado LT 5.3. Different engine choice than what you're asking, but it does have the single speed transfer case and it does fine for me off road. The areas I frequent are not very intense, but like you, I am there for camping/hunting. I've been on rough dirt "roads", that are more just tracks through the woods, in wet summer weather and also snowy winter weather and haven't run into a situation where I thought I was in trouble. If you frequent areas with some very deep mud, or heavily rocky areas, I could see the need for a low range there, but I haven't felt like I miss having it in my case. I came from a 2016 K2 truck with z71 and the low range, and I can count on one hand the number of times I used that low range.

 

I'll attach some photos I have of the new truck in off road settings.

 

This is just my personal opinion on the single speed vs 2 speed t-case. Not saying that no one needs low range.

I'm a little confused.

 

Thread title suggests truck is 4wd, but with the transfer case that doesn't have 4LO.

Post indicates it's a 2wd.

 

 

My usage is farm/rural, and including running through snow - sometimes unplowed, sometimes drifted back in, so I do find situations where I use 4wd.

25 years running 4wd pickups and I don't think I've ever 'needed' 4LO.  Last few truck I haven't even bothered to test and see if 4LO would engage...

FWIW, I'm also not a fan of and don't use the 'autotrac' automatic 4wd mode that has been available on 1500's for a few years, and is available on HDs starting with the 2020's .

4wd HD's transfer cases are all 2 speed units - one with autotrac and one traditional.

If you have 4wd, you're good to go. Just keep decent tires on it. No real need for 4LOW. I've had it on last 2 trucks used for plowing snow and never engaged low range.

 

If you have 2wd, place ballast weight in the rear of the bed and stay out of the mud and snow off-road or you will get stuck. Summer time use, you should be fine. But make sure one of your friends has 4x4 or bring a winch in case you get stuck.

Have you had a chance to price out the difference between trucks with single and two speed transfer cases?

 

If the price is minimal, I would go with the two speed, just in case you ever need it (plus if you have it, you will find a way to use it).

I've never gotten stuck anywhere, in either my 2019 or my 2016 in 4 hi with the G80. You do have to be willing to live with the wheel spin required to lock up the G80. Which I think is something like a 500rpm difference between the rear wheels. 

 

EDIT: apparently it's 120rpm. Google is cool.

I am a 2.7L fan boy now, they only come in single speed.

Makes your decision a lot easier.

 

Maybe drive another truck (different engine) with the two speed, engage it and see what you think. That way you would at least know what it does, and no regrets if you do not like it.

Let's face it: you're probably not doing the Rubicon in your full-sized truck.  For everything else (from ATV trails, to tilled farmland, to getting out on the lake to the ice fishing shack) 4Hi will easily get the job done if you've got the right shoes on.

4 ↓(Four-Wheel Drive Low) : This setting engages the front axle and delivers extra
torque. Choose 4 ↓ when driving off-road in deep sand, deep mud, or deep snow, and
while climbing or descending steep hills. While driving in 4 ↓, keep vehicle speed
below 72 km/h (45 mph).

 

Note-Also useful when plowing snow as it puts less strain on the transmission

and it disables traction control and stability control -- which can be useful in the deep stuff.

    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?  
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
