3.0 Duramax cranks but won’t start

Recommended Posts

We took delivery of our 2021 RST 3.0 third week of June. Over 4 weeks and very little use (less than 1000 km's) truck had no start/long crank issue 4 times. Tried to determine a pattern of vehicle use, parking on slope, no foot on "gas" pedal, definite engagement of push start button, etc., but seems to be random occurrence. Always restarts at 2nd attempt.

In B.C. surrounded by wildfires in our area so we are concerned no start issue might become more severe and truck won't start at all.

Dealer inspected truck July 24th, ran some diagnostics (not sure what), and promised to let us know as soon as possible when they have more info from GM. Still waiting, but no further start issue since the dealer visit.

Will get them to deal with the noisy and annoying rear springs as well.

Same issue 21 Silverado 3.0 duramx been well now for the third time since May for the not starting issue (in shop for 3 weeks as of today). And getting ZERO information from the dealership.

I have started the GM buy back process because I just don’t have the confidence it will start on a regular basis.

2021 GMC Elevation 3.0 Duramax.  Same issue has happened twice now (1,000 miles on the truck).  First time at 600 miles (push button start) and most recently at 1,000 miles (key fob start).  Frustrating because otherwise the truck is great.  It would be nice to see more feedback from GM.

Happened again at 1,600 miles.  Tightened the fuse box bolts to 53 in-lbs yesterday (all four needed tightened).  We'll see what happens.

I think GM is waiting on this forum to find the solution. Sounds like we are close lol

This has happened to me twice now, first time around 4200 miles, second around 6500 miles. I have a GMC Sierra 1500, going on one week at the dealership. They spoke with GM Engineering & just asked me today if they can drive it until it acts up for them. They're putting a sensor from engineering on it to monitor things like fuel pressure, a/f ratios, and more. They're going to keep it until it does it again... hopefully it wont take 2k miles.

I have a 2021 Silverado with the 3.0 duramax doing the same thing since the 2nd week I bought it with less than 200 miles on it. Still having the issue over a dozen times with 13k miles on it. I see where some of you are speaking directly to gm it seems. Is there a phone number available somewhere?

Truck is still in the shop, 33+ days.  Said they have to rip it apart to replace the exciter wheel on the cam and it won’t be ready for another 25 or so days. Have been dealing with the California customer engagement group, I have a call with the repurchase group tomorrow to talk about a buy back.  Number to call  1-866-790-5790

Got my truck July 16.  Crank no start has happened twice, both under 600 miles, guessing about 400 mi and 500 mi.  I freaked out and started pushing the start button multiple times to try and get it to stop.  Sounds like holding the button in will get the start cycle to stop?  Once it stopped, waited and minute or so and it started fine.  It's clear by sound there is no attempt for the engine to fire, it just cranks.

Sounds like no one is sure what it is at this point, especially GM?  I hope the problem does not progressively get worse.

So I am wondering if there is a timing issue between brake application, power up and holding in the ignition button?  I am going to be very deliberate about applying the brake, letting the systems power up so to speak after 15-30 seconds, then pressing and holding the ignition button.  I know I was in haste the times I got the crank but no start and quickly pushed both, not taking time (extra seconds).  I am sure there are some software/hardware timing lockouts in place, but they may not be totally correct and if you hit the right timing, perhaps it cranks with no ignition applied.  I recall something about timing and the glow plugs in one of the information fliers.  My first diesel.  Will see what happens.

Maybe.  But I don't think that explains the key fob start failures.

New 2021 Silverado 1500 Duramax purchased July, 20, 2021 - Left on Business Trip on July 22nd - 1st cranking issue timed out in about 20-30 seconds just under 1000 miles. Second time, same timeout scenario with less than 2000 miles. Initially stopped on trip at closest Chevrolet Dealer (Jeff Wyler Chevrolet south of Columbus) - could not duplicate issue. Truck currently with my local purchasing dealer since Monday, no codes being thrown, not able to duplicate. Very frustrating on a brand new-high dollar LTZ!

You have to call this number and insist on speaking to someone, tell them you do not want to be transferred to an extension, you want to speak to someone (was on hold for 45 minutes until I actually talked to someone)... took me 8 days to actually talk to a specialist.  As of now, they are paying my truck payment for June due to being in the shop for 16 days that month.  Have the truck now... has been in the shop 2 times.  According to the specialist, 1 more time and they will purchase the truck back.  Depending on what state you are in, 30 days could be the point of purchasing your truck back.

What number did you have to call? I’m not seeing it
