I just purchased a new 2021 AT4 from a dealership that was about 450 miles away (due to the shortage and finding one with everything i wanted).  I was on a time crunch and couldn't take 2 lane back roads on my way back home.  Therefore I didn't follow the guideline of 55mph or less for the first 500 miles.  I also see that there is a restriction for towing and how you should stay at 50mph or under for the first 500 miles of towing.  I'm not too concerned with how I drove it home above 55mph, but might be a little concerned when I go to tow the first time and most likely won't remember to stay below 50mph.  After reading all this it had me wondering how many people actually follow these guidelines and what issues you've had because you didn't?

drive her like you stole her mate.. I beat my 6.2 as soon as i got it and this horse kicks back .  41k on my 2019 6.2 and zero issues with the engine.  Mix of 87 and 91 , no pings , no muss and no fuss

There's break-in guidance? Learn something new everyday. While I didn't do WOT, I also didn't drive like my grandma in her late-80's Buick (RIP her and the car). Still haven't done a full WOT run yet either after 15K miles.

I basically did except for a few miles of the first 500. It was pretty easy - just planned to get stuck in traffic and take back roads everywhere. That equated to lots of gradual acceleration, shifting, stopping and "break-in" exercise. Starting at about 600 miles I took my first longer trip of about 250 miles at speeds 60+ and over a few mountain passes where the 5.3 got to breathe heavy.

Not all trucks get a break-in. Rentals, fleet, work trucks usually don't. They still last hundreds of thousands of miles. But this is a personal vehicle for me, and I had the time/space to drive it according to the book, so why not.

I followed the break in procedure to the T with one caveat.

I conducted multiple "spirited" runs up to 55 mph to generate enough cylinder temperature to ensure the rings seated properly.

Over fifty years driving and building motors and I break in everything I buy new or rebuild the same. Low and slow just like smoking hams. Lots of early oil changes. I've never had any issues with motors I break in myself. Zero!

Wife on the other hand believes break in is pointless and speed limits are suggestions. She has two peddles and one of them in on the floor...always. She's batting .500. Exactly half her motors have used abnormal amounts of oil. They all use 30% more fuel and 'wear items" are replaced 3 to 5 times faster than my stuff.

I don't work on her stuff. Never have but I've spent allot of time in the shop with hers waiting on the poor guy that is. 😉

I followed the break in. In fact at 1200 miles or so it still hasn't been on a freeway. In fact, I hadn't driven on the freeway at all since I got it on 6/4 in any vehicle until this morning. The truck will make its maiden freeway trip tomorrow.

It didn't disappoint. Well, the speed limiter was a bit of a disappointment, but expected. 😆

I just completed my 500 mile break in the other day.  I mostly followed the instructions.  Nearly all my driving is on country two lanes when not on trips with the travel trailer.  I did ignore the 55 MPH restriction and I did tow the trailer for about 15 miles to test the setup of my hitch.  We have a trip planned for two weeks from now and then I'm going to tow the trailer normally regardless of how many miles its got on it at the time.
