Its time for a new battery....

My 2019, 1500 is still on the factory battery. I have to say that I am impressed with getting over 5 years out of it at this point. Last week we had some very cold temps and I could hear it struggling to crank the engine over. I want to go ahead and replace it before it leaves me somewhere and before another hot Texas summer beats on it.  

 

This brings me to the point... Shopping batteries I am seeing 2 size options, H6 and H7.  My research tells me that the H7 is about 2" wider but the same otherwise.   H7 size range offers more CCA etc...      What size is the factory battery and what is everyone running?

I have a 2020 and replaced at the 4-year point. The dealer installed GM part number 88864542. I'm not sure what H6 or H7 means.

It appears that the battery you linked is groups size 94r which is basically the same as H7. Not sure why there are different size classifications for batteries but at least I can cross reference them easily.

H7 is the correct one.

If it has stop/start is uses an AGM battery

If it does not use Stop/start it uses flooded.

Sierra and Silverado use the same ones.

Doesn't really matter who you buy a battery from. There are only like 3 companies that make just about all the car batteries in the US. It's a different label and a different price depending on where you buy.

 

Like Napa sells East Penn batteries in most states and Walmart buys from Johnson control. Then I think there is a company called Stryten and Exide.

 

I always say buy what you can afford and buy the at the best price and warranty. Just about any AGM battery comes with a 3 year warranty now.

How about Penn, do they make more than one model? 

How about Exide?

Any chance that the models 'branded' for one company are not the same as the ones 'branded' for another company, even though they are produced by the same manufacturer?

Probably too many to list. Both East Penn and Johnson control make just about every single group size battery for cars, everything from 24, 27. 47. 48. 51, 51R, 65, 75, 90, 94, 94R ect etc and both make commercial batteries in all the popular sizes. Both make RV and marine batteries as well.

 

With Napa they sell 3 different tiers all from East Penn. The Pro-former, the Legend and Legend Premium. They also have a AAA battery which is a premium with a different name. You are paying for the cold cranking amps and the warranty. The battery will have more or less plates in it or whatever it is to get you those cold cranking amps.

 

Walmart does the same thing and I know other parts store do the same thing. The cases on the most of these batteries is exactly the same but some store chains will have their own case style, I see them all the time because I've worked in parts sales for over 14 years part time. Really it's just the stickers on the batteries that change.

You must be a old as Jesus!  In 1 thread you said you spent 15 years in the tire industry.  Now you've spent 14 years in auto parts.  Plus, you've been doing WAMS for a number of years.  Have you figured out the part number for a deep oil filter in the Wix XP line for the 6.2 yet?

Iirc, Exide makes batteries in every automotive size, and then some.  Just like CamGTP, I use to work in auto parts.  My company was an Exide distributor.  Our Exide rep would look at the age of your inventory every time he came by.  If three battery was 6 months old he'd swap it out for a new one.  We carried every size.  You may have seen the company, but it's not as mainstream as some of the competition.  It was called Advantage Auto Parts.  They also carry the Bumper to Bumper name.  I look for them wherever I move (which I do frequently thanks to the military).  They seem to exist primarily in smaller towns.  For example, I'm in Pensacola, Florida.  The nearest Bumper to Bumper stores to me are in Milton, Florida to the east and Robertsdale, Alabama to the west.  I like a backroad 2 lane highway cruise so I'll probably venture to the Robertsdale store when I need a battery.  I like the Exide NASCAR Extreme series since they tend to crank out a little more power than the standard batteries so in the same group size.

I'm only in my 30's lol. I've worked 2 jobs for the past 15+ years. Just so happens that one has been in the tire business and the other part time been selling auto parts lol.

 

No idea on the long filter in the WIX line, the 100255 from Napa is already the long filter for the 2014-2018 trucks and I guess even from 2019 to atleast 2021 because my parents trucks still uses that filter.

 

The older trucks used to run the 7060 from Napa which was the short filter, the long version was a 7045.

Wix 10255xp for reference here and know of no other higher capacity oil filter in this line for 6.2. 

 

FWIW, I used Interstate AGM H7 for my replacement.

Exactly.  Pretty much has come down to what type and how long of a warranty (some are free replacement during the warranty and some are still pro-rated), and price.
