Anybody have any reviews for faraday key fob pouches?  Just read about another RVer that lost his new truck in a parking lot.  I want one that is small and can easily be carried in pocket.

Spoiler

What is the method that was thought to have been used to steal the truck?

No idea on theft of truck as it was never recovered.  I had read info on stealing key fob codes.  Don't know what I don't know.

Then you have no idea if blocking the fob signals would make a difference or not.

If someone wants a specific vehicle, then it's gone.  They either know how to defeat the stock keys/security setup, or they just flat-bed it away.

I would suggest installing a kill switch, so that stops the people who defeat the oem setup, regardless of how they do it.  Something that cuts the starter, fuel pump, injectors from working.

Faraday pouch works EXCELLENT mine works when sitting in the truck pouch in pocket with me.

Kill switch that runs a relay from another key fob is also a great idea or a pedal commander that kills throttle at anything above idle it works off an app on your phone.

A lot of options out there PLUS throw on an old school club to buy more time but put it on with lock cylinder facing away from you so the thief has a hard time drilling it if they try rather than cutting it.

The added relay with fob is a good one or the hidden kill switch.

But add layers as time is what you need to buy.

I Have used both of these on 2 different trucks.

Those clubs stopped no one. They cut though the wheel in seconds, not the club.

I personally won’t be doing any of this stuff. I have insurance. And I also live in a nice area, by design, so it’s unlikely it would ever happen anyway. I don’t know a single person in my area who has had a vehicle stolen. Ever.

The concern with the RFID fobs, fobs in general that can start a vehicle are called relay attacks. Thieves in close proximity to the key can replicate its signals to spoof the car into unlocking doors. When access is gained, the idea is they can get into the car's OBD system and program a new key. Then, they use that key to start your car and drive away without making any more noise than unlocking and opening the driver's door until they take off.

Depends on the car, but you can prevent relay attacks by disabling passive/RFID entry and not using RFID. If that method prevents handshake signals then a nearby scanner can't record it. And sometimes the button induces a sleep mode for the RFID system.

You want to use a faraday bag for your fob, and install kill switches, and use 1980's club technology, and live in fear with a jury-rigged vehicle with wire splices all over, whatever helps ya sleep at night. I'm with Pryme here... it's not likely to happen to my truck, but that's by intentional design and behaviors. For everything else, there's insurance.

They make ODB "locks"  I installed one in my camaro.  Nothing is 100% theft proof but itll make it harder for them

I read an article about the high demand for stolen Denalis with wealthy people in other parts of the world, and that there are theft rings in the US that fulfill that demand using the method described above. One person had a tracker on their truck and followed it traveling by rail and ship to the Middle East.

johnnyquick; spot on.  We pull 5th wheel camper 4 months of the year- pacific NW/Idaho, CO mtns and NW AR and stay in RV parks.  As far as keeping it at home; average price in my neighborhood is $1 mill + and one way in and out; so, no issues there since I built in 1992 when I built on our 2+ acres.

Thanks for great ideas.

FWIW

10 yrs ago my precious Chevy Tahoe, along with two neighboring vehicles were broken into with some sorta wireless device while parked in an extremely expensive shopping area.

When got back to my parked vehicle and pressed the unlock button on my fob the lights flashed in a way I hadn’t seen before. Thieves got my iPad and items from inside the neighboring cars.

Don’t know how a fob pouch would’ve helped but I can say high tech crime does happen.

Didnt know that the pedal commander has that feature… gonna have to read more about that!

While on key fob issue; I've been told while my 23 Silverado HD is parked in the garage it still talks to fob for updates etc and can/will run truck battery down.  I ask because for first time ever after setting for 2 1/2 weeks my batteries were too low to start the truck.  After, slow charged batteries and checked load and both batteries were still good and no issues since.  To combat this I installed a trickle charger as truck won't be driven for over a month this time.

Any thoughts or opinions?

Thanks

This was one of the reasons I got a cheap pouch from Amazon. My truck will sit for weeks in the winter. The fob was talking to the truck quite a bit. So much that I had to get a trickle charger.

I got one that is the size of a wallet. Sits on my desk until I need the truck. Works great.
