It's all smiles and handshakes at the start of General Motors' and its workers' union negotiations. Things generally are not as friendly after that for a bit. Cathy Clegg, GM North America vice president of Manufacturing and Labor Relations will be the head of negotiations for GM. She commented at the opening ceremonies, saying “Formal talks begin today, but in recent years we’ve demonstrated our ability to develop creative solutions together. As a team we must continue to solve problems, build in quality and enhance competitiveness.”

General Motors became the latest company to be dragged into the Confederate flag controversy. GM is presently sponsoring the Kid Rock Summer Tour. The National Action Network, a group founded by the Rev. Al Sharpton, has asked GM to pull that sponsorship (which is basically advertising) because when the group asked Kid Rock to denounce the Confederate flag he refused.

Today Chevrolet announced changes it plans to make to the 2016 Silverado. Calling the 2016 Silverado "The new face of strong" Chevy says the Silverado will be more muscular in appearance. This is a big departure from all the other trucks in the segment, which are trying hard to look more feminine and delicate in their new styling (not). Chevy says the new sculpted look will better reflect the truck's strength and dependability. Sandor Piszar, marketing director for Chevy Trucks said the new styling includes “New front end designs with bold horizontal elements, sculpted hoods and dramatic lighting..." Note the plural "designs." It sounds like Chevy will have more than one grill and hood depending upon the trim.

At a recent symposium I attended on green car technology a panel member, and EVangelist, actually compared the cost of fuel of a Hummer to a Nissan Leaf. His point was that the Leaf is more efficient. We were all speechless by the astute observation. Had I known about this recent recall I could have chimed in "And those Hummers will catch on fire and burn you!"

  9. Why is GM's stock price now below its IPO price of 2009?

    Teaser Paragraph:

    John Goreham
    Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com
    7/15/2015
Why don't investors love GM? The company is selling record numbers of vehicles, and it does not have to pay any tax on its profits for decades due to a "unique" bankruptcy deal it struck when it restructured six years ago, The General's trucks are clobbering the Ford F-150 in overall sales, GM has innovative, and diverse green car technology to keep the government on its side, and its specialty cars like the Corvette and Camaro are the envy of the world in terms of performance, value, and sales. So why aren't investors seeing value in GM stock? If we read the reports correctly GM's stock price is 33% below the value it would have had if it had just kept pace with the S&P 500 since it was added in June 2013.

  10. Slow-moving GM HD trucks may offer a value opportunity

    Teaser Paragraph:

    John Goreham
    Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com
    7/14/2015
Every media outlet focused on trucks likes to report the "fastest-selling" truck news. Right now, the Chevy Colorado is that vehicle. While we fans of the brand may take some pride in that fact, the downside is companies making stuff that flies off dealer lots are not under any pressure to discount those hot models. Very few people focus on the opposite end of the "time on dealer lots" story. Interestingly, it is also a Chevy truck that owns that title. Specifically the Silverado 2500 HD Extended Cab.

  14. GM Passes Ford In Full-Size Truck Sales

    Teaser Paragraph:

    John Goreham
    Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com
    7/12/2015
Perhaps due to the production challenges Ford faced when it switched to aluminum-intensive construction on the F-150, perhaps it is the 85 Benjamins that Chevy is reportedly piling on the hoods of Silverados to lure buyers, maybe both. Regardless, the combined sales of the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra exceeded those of the F-150 in June.

  15. Chevy Colorado Sales Drop Noticably In June

    Teaser Paragraph:

    John Goreham
    Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com
    7/12/2015
After many consecutive months of reporting ever-growing sales for GM trucks, the month of June proved the spoiler. Yes, the Silverado and the Sierra both did very well compared to June 2014, but look a little deeper and one sees that the Silverado and Sierra both sold at almost exactly the same rate as last month (May 2015). The expansion of GM truck sales stopped in June. At least temporarily.

GM announced today that new Tahoe and Suburban owners who opt for the Theft Protection Package can opt to receive real-time theft alerts if their vehicle's glass is broken or the alarm sounded. The system also has internal sensors that detect theft by towing using inclination and other sensors.

The idea is to capture the waste-heat in the exhaust stream of a vehicle. That energy will be converted to electricity using Alphabet Energy's thermoelectric technology. Once converted to electricity, the power can be used to support the alternator, replace the alternator, or to power vehicle components using electricity.

"You see him on TV any given Sunday, when the Superbowl ends he drives off in a Hyundai." Prescient words Mr. West. Indeed if Hyundai takes over sponsorship of the NFL as Bloomberg Business is predicting, it may be a Santa Fe or Genesis that the Superbowl MVP drives off with instead of a Chevy Colorado next year.

Again - this is not our strongest point when it comes to automotive knowledge, but the money magazines and media are all talking about a possible GM - Fiat Chrysler Automobiles US (FCAUS) merger. In our prior report, we pointed out that if the head of FCA US wanted to force a merger discussion with GM he might be able to do so by having key GM stockholders see things his way. The most recent news according to Forbes, is that GM may have an ace in the hole - Tax breaks
