  3. Should VW's dirty-diesel-debacle concern GM diesel owners? 1 2

    Teaser Paragraph:

    9/21/2015
Over the weekend the big news in the automotive world was that the EPA has accused Volkswagen of purposely rigging its diesels to cheat emissions testing. According to an EPA document, VW has admitted to the cheating. The upshot is that VW diesels from 2009 through 2015 have been operating at 10 to 40 times the legal limit of NOx (oxides of nitrogen). Whether you care about the environmental impacts of emissions or not, you should care about automakers cheating on emissions equipment. Cars and trucks that don't meet emissions standards and have not had recalls completed can be precluded from being registered in California and the 10 other states that follow its guidelines. Consumer Reports has issued a statement saying it won't recommend any VW diesel until VW proves the fix does not change performance or fuel economy.

  4. Which special Camaro is this testing on the 'Ring?

    Teaser Paragraph:

    9/18/2015

OK Camaro nation, which of the off-the-hook Camaros is this? The person who filmed it says it is the 2017 ZL1. It could very well be. Or it could be Z/28. Or it could be a twin-turbo powered 3.6-liter V6 Camaro, or... The list is endless. What clues do you see to suggest it is or is not a ZL1? In the past has meant a 6.2-liter supercharged engine, but who is to say it will in the future?

  8. It's GM's Birthday Today - Sign its birthday card here

    Teaser Paragraph:

    John Goreham

Today is GM's birthday. The company is 107 years old. Founded by William Durant on September 16, 1908, the company has seen its ups and downs. Haven't we all? GM is riding high today with excellent products, quality ratings that are bumping the Japanese companies off their high horse, and sales, of trucks and SUVs at least, that are the envy of the industry. Having been "reborn" after the troubles of 2009, GM could not be in a better position than it is today.

  9. $96K Shelby Super Snake vs. $39K Camaro SS - Which is faster 1 2 3

    Teaser Paragraph:

    John Goreham
    Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com
    9/15/2015
Whenever possible we try to give readers more than just the latest press release from GM. This week, GM's news release is the test results of the 2016 Camaro line. The news is impressive. First, the 1SS with its optional super-sticky 20-inch tires and automatic transmission can sprint from 0-60 MPH in 4-seconds flat. The quarter mile comes in just 12.3 seconds. Those are better numbers than 90% of all the supercars ever produced. Let's not forget the Lamborghini Countach was a mid-six-second car to sixty when it was on posters all over the world. However, the Camaro is not a car that is built to be the best supercar. It is built to be the best ponycar, so we have to look over at the Mustang to see how this new generation will stack up.

  10. Can Any Production Car Beat the Corvette Z06 On-Track?

    Teaser Paragraph:

    John Goreham
    Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com
    9/14/2015
Can any production car, at any price, beat the 2016 Corvette Z06 on a road-course type track? If you are a fan and subscriber of Car and Driver magazine, you may already know the answer. CD has a unique format that they have been using now for many years. They go to the same racetrack, and they run the cars with testing equipment to record that car's best lap time. The best time the car can lay down, at the hands of the near-professional CD editorial staff, goes on record. It is put up or shut up time. This year the newest top-spec 'Vette laid down an amazing time. Nothing even close to the Corvette's price can match it on the Virginia International Raceway road course past or present. But that was not our question. We asked, could anything at any price that is a true production car beat this relatively affordable Corvette? Before we answer, it is important to note that the Corvette Z06 is not some kind of white buffalo that GM talks about but does not really make. GM will move over 8,000 of the 2015 Z06 according to our go-to Corvette expert, Patrick Rall. About 20% to 25% of the total Corvette volume. That is a hell of a lot more cars than the Miata sold in 2015, and everyone considers the Miata a pretty mainstream sports car.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is the group that does the most comprehensive vehicle testing in the U.S. The group recently called on automakers to make automated emergency braking standard (not an available option) on all cars and trucks. General Motors was one of the ten automakers who agreed to do so.

  12. 'Vette-powered Escalade or XT5 - Which Is the Future?

    Teaser Paragraph:

    John Goreham
    Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com
    9/11/2015
Has Cadillac lost its way? Today, Automotive News reports that Cadillac's Chief Marketing Officer Uwe Ellinghaus said the company's goal with its newest vehicle, the XT5 "... is to gain the attention of fashionistas, rather than cater to car buffs and auto journalists. Because in his view, younger customers are less interested in the technical details of cars, and don't read car magazines as often as they used to." We're not sure anyone reads any "magazines" anymore, but Mr. Ellinghaus at least seems to have a direction for the struggling luxury automaker to head in. Except that Cadillac is not heading that way according to Motor Trend's Jonny Lieberman, who reports that the next car-buff Cadillac will be an Escalade powered by the same engine as the Corvette. This follows the new CTS-V, which is targeted at car buffs and is powered by an engine like the one in the Corvette.

A newly filed lawsuit in Wisconsin says that GM knew it had a problem with cracking dashboards. ABC News has reported that the suit alleges GM tried to find a cause other than its manufacturing and materials to blame the problem on. GM is also not covering the repairs of trucks out of warranty since this is not a safety hazard. However, there are reports that GM dealerships are offering to pay half of the cost of repairs. We do not have that from GM directly.

  16. Reliability Study Finds GMC Beats Honda - How Did Your Truck Do?

    Teaser Paragraph:

    John Goreham
    Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com
    9/9/2015

Last year at an automotive press launch I met the author of this article and one of the people behind this study. Steven Lang is not an easy guy to put in to a nice neat box. He owns a business involved in used car buying and selling. He writes news and opinion for some of the most respected automotive publications, and he is the kind of guy that strikes one as a deep thinker when you meet him. In his newest update to an on-going reliability study he is involved in, he points out that GMC's vehicles are more reliable than Honda's. In particular, he says that the full-size GMC trucks and SUVs "offer exceptional long-term reliability with a very low engine and transmission defect rate." He means what he says. Long term. His study picks up where most leave off, starting at 5 years of use and going up to 20 years.

  17. Cadillac ATS Recalled For Fire RIsk

    Teaser Paragraph:

    John Goreham
    Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com
    9/9/2015
General Motors is recalling the ATS - Again. It was recalled a week ago over a sunroof issue. This time it is the rear window defroster which can overheat and could cause a fire. Models from 2013 to 2015 are affected (we think that is all ATS model years). Apparently the ATS has an automatic defroster for the rear window. Under certain situations it can overheat. GM's fix is reportedly to disable this feature. The driver could still operate the defroster manually.

  20. Boost or V8 for your Chevy project truck? Why not both?

    Teaser Paragraph:

    John Goreham
    Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com

Chevy's latest V8 crate engine can handle boost of up to 15 psi. That means you can take this V8 and either supercharge or turbocharge it. Chevy says the curve below was from its LSX 376B15 engine without boost running 87 octane fuel. 450 ft-lb of torque and about 420 HP before you breathe on it.

OK Silverado fans here at GM-Trucks.com. This is just for grins and giggles, so let's not get all serious. Just image if Sergio Marchionne's evil scheme to merge GM and FCA US came to pass. Now let's go one step further and say that the bean counters looked at the 14 trims of the Ram 1500 and the dozen or so Silverado variants and said "Let's just take the best of both and make one!" Call it the Ramerado.
