Burning Oil?

I just bought my truck back in March I beleive. It was a 1 owner lease trade in with 39k miles. 2007 5.3 Aluminum Block I think? GMC Sierra z71 4x4 SLT loaded out. Truck is in mint condition and I do love it. I hardly put any miles on a truck since I live so close to work so I have only put about 3k miles on it and the majority of that was an out of state trip.

I have read about the oil burning issue with these motors and understand there are some tsb's and some minor things GM does to try and fix it but I hear nothing really takes care of it. I also hear that GM says 1 qt burned for every 2k miles is normal? I dont care how the engine is designed I dont think it should burn any oil.

Here is the bad part. I know when I bought the truck the dipstick showed about 1/2 qt over fill line. I checked the oil a few days ago before it had been started for the day so all the oil was in the pan and it was about 1/2 qt below the full line. I added some to fill it up. I also took a picture and emailed it to myself with the miles noted so I can track whats going on just in case I am actually losing my mind. I absolutely cannot stand that it burns oil with only 42k on the clock. At the moment it looks like I am using about 1qt every 3k miles.

So what should I do? Use powertrain warranty to have them fiddle with it and hope they actually fix it? Will they push me to the curb in May 2012 when my warranty expires even if it still burns oil then?

Should I trade it in? Sell it? I have about 27k in it after purchasing it and putting new tires and a few other things on. I owe 22,800.00 I beleive NADA retail is still 30,025.00.

Keep it and put oil in her as needed and go on and dont worry about it? My DIC is saying I am about 50% oil life so when I change the oil what is reccomended to stop or help burning oil? Anything?

You are inviting the AFM arguement just so you are aware. Do a search for AFM burning oil and you will a very colorful variety of comments & opinions on your type situation. Mine is an '06 so AFM wasn't even an option. My truck starting using a bit of oil about 20k miles ago, now at ~85K miles. By time I'm up for an oil change (~5-6K miles) I'm only down 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart so I don't worry about. I do monitor my oil level in case it gets worse but me personally if you can live with it, keep it & keep tabs on the level as you are already doing. Nice looking truck. :dunno:

I'd have the dealer monitor the situation and get them involved while you have warranty. Let them guide you thru the process and if your not happy with that, you still have 2 choices. Keep putting oil in it and forget about it or trade it off.

It is quite amazing to me that so many people ignore these oil burning problems and continue buying new AFM engine equipped trucks. I would at least expect them to wait until GM positively solves the oil burning and substandard quality lifter problems. Buying an AFM truck and crossing one's fingers hoping that mine will not burn oil or have the lifters fail is rather naive I think.

The other day I stopped at a large Chevy dealership and out of 100 or so new 1/2 ton trucks there was not one with the 6.2 liter engine and maybe 10 with the 4.8 liter V8. Everything else had the 5.3 AFM engine in it. Evidently, GM is pushing this engine and giving dealers better prices on them.

The issue here is that if you continue buying these AFM trucks, there is no incentive for GM to fix anything. To them, large sale volume of the AFM equipped trucks means that the customers are happy.

Or maybe, just maybe, that engine is the most popular option? How about the fact that maybe, again, just MAYBE not every 5.3 AFM engine produced burns oil like you may think they do? I know, it's just ludacris to think about but completely possible, none the less. :dunno:

So basically it is a crap shoot. So keep your fingers crossed and pick out the one that does not burn oil. No thanks. I will buy a truck with a known good engine without that crap. I do not gamble with $30k+ purchases.

So basically, what you were saying is a completely false, blanket statement besides the fact that for some reason, you feel the need to reply about how big of an issue this is and then comment on how you wouldn't buy one because of this. OK, who cares? Buy what you want and have a nice day. Not sure what else your comments are going to do other than start an arguement but hey, I guess that's what sites like this are for on the internet, eh? :dunno:

Do you own a t shirt with an AFM engine on it and a red circle with a line through it?
