How-To: Replace Heater Fan/Blower Motor 1999 GMT800.

My 99 Yukon had a intermittently squeaky blower motor that was becoming VERY annoying from time to time.

 

This actually is a fairly straight-forward job, but you would never know it by reading the manual. I have 3 manuals (two Chilton's and the Factory Service Manual (FSM)) for my truck because the 99 is kind of a cross between the old body style with some of the new features of the 2000's.

 

Here's the basics: remove the glove box, then unplug the two wires to the blower motor, then wrestle off the rubber/insulation cover over the motor, remove the five (7/32") screws, rotate the flat spot to allow you to get past the tubular bar and work the motor out (it barely makes it).

 

What the manuals needed was a step that says this: there's an rubber cover/insulator over the blower motor that seems like it can't possibly be removed, but it can. You have to loosen the bottom, then pry it off at the top, and wiggle it a lot, but it *will* come out.

 

After I got the rubber cover off, I swore it would never go back on, but somehow, i managed to get it back over the motor with a lot of wrangling.

 

Once the rubber cover was off, the 5 bolts that hold in the motor were *fairly* accessible. I had to use a 1/4" nut driver with the 7/32" socket and two 1/4" extensions and was just barely able to get enough hold on the screws to turn them. I needed a 7/32" box-end at one point, too.

 

I pulled the lower trim panel off, but I'm not sure that was really necessary.

 

I think it took my probably an hour of labor, but probably well over that when I factor in the time trying to figure out what the hell the manuals were trying to say.

 

It would have been about $300 to have a shop replace the motor with a brand new one. I got one at a wrecking yard for $40, though the truck it came off of has 100,000 miles on it, so we'll see how long it lasts.

 

Hope this helps anyone looking to tackle this fairly simple job but, like I was, feeling a bit stumped about how to get the cover off and get to the bolts.
