2003 1500HD Transfer Case pinhole

Hello,

I posted a reply to a different topic, so I coming in to place a real post.

I recently discovered that the ticking sound that was coming from underneath my truck was coming from the transfer case. It was not showing any signs of leaking fluid (drops on ground, etc.), but it only had a few drops in it when I discovered the noise. I don't know how long it has been empty. I filled it and drove it a few miles. It was wet when I returned home. I found a pinhole leak which I plugged/patched with JB-Weld. It is not leaking now, but I'm noticing some roughness in driving.

Should I have mine rebuilt?--> There's no telling how much damage has been done since it has been run without fluid for who know how long. It will need the rear housing repaired/reinforced. Will probably need chain, gears, etc.

Should I buy a rebuilt one?--> Who is recommended?

If I wanted to get one from a salvage yard and rebuild it, which one would I get? I have a New Process 246, but I understand there are different ones for the type of transmission I have. How do I know which transmission I have? I looked and I cannot see any stickers from underneath.

It is my only mode of transportation, so I need to have my ducks on a row before I take a plunge.

It's called pump rub...... just search that with NVG 246 in google and you will find tons of them. Your transmission is a 4L80E, it's RPO code MT1 in the glovebox. Bascially the repair includes an updated wear plate for the pump and then a new case half for the transfer case. Since yours ran dry it's basically going to be junk inside now so buying a rebuilt case would be simplest. I could tell who to get one from up here but down in the States I really don't know. You can probably google that too, lol. Getting a used one would be a waste of time as it will just do the exact same thing again unless you split when you get it and install this:

That solves the problem you have right now. Your case at minimum needs bearings, maybe a chain, the clutch assembly and who knows what else. Just getting an updated case is simpler.

Thanks for all of the replies.

I was thinking the same thing......I'm going to go ahead with a rebuilt one with a warranty.
