What octane do you run?

I have a 2013 2500 6.0. I have been buying 92 oct. I get around 14 mpg 9 towing. I was wandering what yall are running in your 6.0's? Owners manual say I can burn 87 oct.

Thanks

I have my truck TUNED for 93 so I benefit more from it rather than a truck that isn't tuned for such.

Virtually nothing is gained by filling up with a more expensive grade of fuel than the vehicle manufacturer recommends. So you are throwing money out the tail pipe.

Even tuned agressively they run fine on

87. Zero need or use for premium gas.

Read something a while back in regards to this.. The 10% ethanol blends at 89 octane give less mileage than the non ethanol 87 octane fuels. The balance is in the price though. Your paying less per gallon and getting less miles. Where the 87 you are paying more and getting more. Most have seen this to be a wash. As for premium 90+ octane; if the manufacturer doesn't call for it to be needed, chances are its a waste. IMO.

Wrong on that. Blackbear has seen improvements on stock motors running higher octane and running lower on a tuned motor is plain stupid. It may be safe in most instances as the knock sensors will retard timing but you won't see the full gain either. My truck is tuned for premium so I use that or E85 when not on long distances.

That said, in most areas the difference between regular and premium is a few bucks a tank, never understood why people make a big deal out of premium fuel vs regular.

Thanks guys. I have ran 87 oct , but mostly 92 oct 10% eth. Mileage seem about the same. Non eth is too hard to find and more $. On a tank I would save 15$ running 87. Think I will go back to 87. Just want this motor to last.

Any difference between the cheaper stations and the name brands?

Thanks

My friend up in Canada is a tanker driver and they refill their trucks at the same refinery and fill all the stations up from the same place except Shell Gasoline stations....

How many no name gasoline stations have a facility !

The newest stations with new tanks in the ground are the safest for non-watered gas....

I run 87 when just running around as a grocery getter, but I run 89 and higher when towing as it seems pull harder. I'm thinking these newer engines retard the timing when running the lower grades to prevent pinging?

For the record, I get the same mileage unloaded running any grade of gas through mine, but the higher octane does typically run smoother.

Sorry bud. I actually tune too with efilive..... myself. The only improvement you may see is from fuel quality which octane has nothing to do with. 28 degrees wot advance and no detonation on 87.... and still nothing at part throttle cruise. But sure... buy premium for the warm fuzzy it gives lol.

And I'm going to side with Blackbear, sorry. They're a trusted tuner with hundreds of happy customers here.

Mine is Blackbear tuned and running 93. If I go back down to 87 it knocks so I just stick with 93, not like I put many miles on it anyway. A tank last me two or three weeks depending on what I'm doing.

That's fine but get some actual personal background in it before telling someone else about it. The engines in question here don't have a high enough static or dynamic compression ratio to require premium gas... I don't care what Blackbear does or says to be honest.... not because of any disrespect towards Justin, but because I have done my own thing and I don't need them. I log my own tunes and started with premium and worked my way down octane wise. If you have datalogged and actually experience knock retard then up the fuels octane. Blackbear is a reputable tuner, I agree. That said... more than just Justin out there can tune.... Constructive criticism is a great thing... but I will take it from others than know how to tune their trucks and not those that just pay others to do so thanks.
