Can someone direct me to a page on this forum (or elsewhere) that will clearly explain what a 1.5 inch level generated by a bottom of the shock spacer will do to my suspension? I want to raise up the front of my truck for appearance while maintaining a small rake. I want to know if I lose any suspension travel or negatively alter anything else. The Bilstein shocks make sense but the installed cost is too much for me to justify at this time. Thanks!

I have installed them on 2 trucks now and with the height you are going, you shouldn't have any negative side-effects. Suspension travel should be the same and the ride is the same on mine.

You will need an alignment after installing the leveling spacer so you don't put premature wear on your tires though...

Hey, first post here, I've been reading for about a month thought.

 

I just ordered a 16 sierra crew cab standard box with the max trailering package and I'm looking for a leveling kit. I've heard that the max package raises the rear end up about 3/4s of an inch but I haven't gotten mine yet and there's none on any local lots to compare.

 

And anyone tell me if the rear is actually higher then a regular 4x4?

 

If it is, any suggestions for leveling kits?

I had Bilstein 5100's installed for a very reasonable price. I ordered the shocks online and had them shipped free to my door in 3 days from Richmond, BC. The shocks were $150 each. Install and Alignment was another $300 so my all in cost to level my truck was $600 including alignment. I know a guy who had a Readylift 2.25" Level installed at the dealer near me for $1100. So Bilsteins aren't really more expensive to do.

Thanks for the information. I believe as well that the prices I get quoted over the phone are higher than if I paid an hourly rate to have a pre purchased product installed. There just seems to be about $300 difference in the finished install. My truck is basically a grandpa's big car and I won't be putting much stress on the vehicle. Saying this, I don't want to do anything that will compromise the safety or ride. I am hoping to find a better understanding of what changes, other than height, might be caused by such a level.

I believe by your response and by the number of people adding this type of level that there is no noticeable difference. I did an online inquiry with GM on this question and my response was very negative to any such modification. (No surprise) I was hoping they would send me some literature explaining why or why not a small level will enhance my truck.

Rear didn't look any higher on mine. I went with the RC 2" fron tleveling kit with the additional 1" in the rear

Okay guys, I've been reading these posts and the posts in the suspension lift thread and need some help. I want to lift/level my truck but am not sure which way to go. I like the looks of the 3.5" lift, can't go much higher with my garage, but I do not like the idea of having to trim or cut on a brand new differential. Can I achieve a similar look with a 2.5" level in the front with a 2" rear block (like the Rough Country kit) ? Any help or thoughts would be appreciated. I want an aggressive look but the thought of cutting on a new vehicle makes me cringe a little. Thanks in advance

How in the world did you fit a 33x12.50 with 2 inch level?! I don't even think I can fit a 33x12.50x18 with my 2" Motofab level.

From what I've read, I wouldn't go over a 2.5in level. You can get your 3.5in of height in a variety of ways. RC has a 1.25in body lift and zone has a 1.5in. Add that with 1.5in, 2in, or 2.5in level and you can get a variety of sizes of total height. The shop that I go to quoted me for either body lift kit at $550 for the kit and install. RC also sells them as a combo lift at either 3.25 or 3.75in.

The rim size doesn't matter on a flotation sized tire.

 

A 33x12.50 is actually more like a 32.5x11.5, so it's basically a 285/65/R18 or 305/60R18....both of which fit with a level. It's "usually" easier to fit a Mud Terrain than an All Terrain in the same size because the M/Ts run narrower in tread width.

    • probably won't get a response from that user, as they haven't returned to the site since making that one post.  users don't (at least I don't, and I haven't seen any setting which would notify me via say, email) get any notification other than going to this site, and checking if they got a response on their thread...
    • Thanks - I wasn't quite caffeinated this morning. 2:1 makes sense, turning the crankshaft 360 degrees will turn the cam 180 degrees, and had I done that, the cam's dot would be at 6 and the crank's at 12 again.   I went ahead and took the sprocket off anyway, aligned everything dot-to-dot including the balance shaft just for s&g. I'm glad I did because I discovered no Loctite on the timing sprocket bolts. Maybe it's not required, but at only 20 ft-lb torque spec, those bolts aren't in there very tight. Cleaned and reassembled with some thread locker and torqued.   A general observation: Less is more with RTV. If a little doesn't stop a leak, a LOT probably won't, either. RTV is thinly veiled revenge, in a tube...      
    • The timing marks are ok, that is #1, you can turn it over until they line up and it won't change anything, the crankshaft turns twice for every camshaft revolution, I have always set up SB Chevs as your pic shows using a straight edge
    • Someone's been here before.... There is a receipt for a 3-piece timing set, purchased earlier this year.   Is this picture something, or, nothing?   I have the timing cover off and my crank is perfectly TDC and the keyed gear's locating mark is dead on 12 o'clock.   The cam gear locating mark is also at 12 o'clock. Now, I'm not an expert, but all the install guides say the two locating marks should meet and be perfectly aligned when installing a timing set. The mark on the crank should be dead on 12:00 and the cam gear's mark should be dead on 6:00, and both marks should be perfectly vertically aligned.   I believe the timing gear is keyed or has a dowel that ensures it can only be installed on the cam in one position, so I have to believe the cam is out of phase somehow. At the very least, with a triangular bolt pattern, it can only be installed in one of 3 different positions.   Before I pulled the front cover, the truck was running alright, no service engine soon lights except an occasional P0172 / rich condition. Timing -16 timing at idle (should be +16), and total -35% fuel trim, two conditions I haven't been able to figure out.   In related news, my injector tested pretty well, wasn't leaking, but I had it rebuilt anyway, and it's on it's way back to me.         Along with this discovery, the good and bad:   Good: The oil pan seal appears undamaged.   Bad: -The timing cover has been reused, and the positioning dowels have been broken. That could explain some of the leaking. -Some kind of white paste or grease was used to try to seal the oil pan seal and timing cover (since wiped off..). -Then, someone globbed silicone all over the front of the cover and also buried the ckp sensor in it. But, they didn't put any inside the cover or use RTV to try to seal the oil pan seal with the timing cover (good).
    • The guy that owns K&P filters last I checked in with him has over 300,000 miles on his Dodge base Hemi using his own 35 micron absolute stainless mesh filter from its first oil change.    The GM study I've posted a dozen times shows the relationship in engine life based in multiples of base units, not miles or years. That is the base unit is the number of miles the motor ran using the reference filter efficiency.    The above two paragraphs dismantle anecdotal arguments IF one changes oil often enough to prevent particle formation and the motor is in otherwise good shape. That is not full of silica (no air filter) or suffering a metallurgical issue that is not part of the lubrication discussion. Poor heat treat in example.   Data from UOA's I've reviewed from more than a few engines can show remarkably broad variations in oil cleanliness using the exact same filter over the course of an engines life.     Lastly there is the common sense of it. Wear debris WILL circulate the engine BEFORE it ever sees a filter in route to that filter and WILL harm the pump which NEVER sees filtered oil.    Alpha question then becomes, given the facts, how long do you believe is a reasonable service life from a vehicle you are certain you will not pass down? That is the junk yard will be it's resting place when you're done with it? (the moral issue most don't care about).    Omega question is then how diligent are you prepared to be in general mechanical, air & oil maintenance? Preventing particulates and keeping them sufficiently dilute; preventing the precursors from generation, amalgamation and precipitation.    If I get a good look at the engine bay of a vehicle I have a fair idea of the owners commitment to the inside of the power train. That 30 micron WIX is still more efficient than a sieve.
