Really tough decision on new truck purchase

Yeah I have the 6.2 in my SS camaro great engine. But crappy thing it means premium which is 40 cents or so more gallon, so not a big deal your talking an extra 10-12 bucks a tanks. I get 23mpg HWY cruise set at 75 in the car with 3.42 gearing, doubt youll come even close to that in a truck.

The camaro is a different generation AFM though, right? Also, hasn't GM said the new 6.2 runs off of 87 fine but to get rated HP/Torque it requires premium.

If you need the MPG savings sure, go the 5.3 route. If you want the power, 6.2.

Your probably right. The car doesnt have v4/v8 mode either. My wife has the 2.0 turbo in the malibu it reccomends premium but you can use 87 which sayd decreases performance and MPG. So the 6.2 should be the same. It also said running premium monthly or every other tank will not help clean it out or anything either.

Current truck has to run premium (Blackbear tune) so the type of gas doesn't bother me.

As of now I am on hold, tried CarMax today and they offered me less for the Vette than the dealers wholesaler did. So as of now I am waiting, bank did tell me they are going to do a black Friday promo for special rates that I would qualify for, once qualified it will hold for 30 days. Then the decision will be weather or not I want to take the Nov incentive deals or gamble and see what the December incentives are.

the 6.2L -LS3 motor, paired with manual trans in Camaro's does not have AFM.

the 6.2L -L99 motor, paired with the Auto trans in Camaro's DOES have AFM.

Just FYI.

And the here are specs on the new truck engines, so you can see by the engine code, the 6.2L's are indeed a totally different motor. Just sharing the same displacement

2014- 4.3 L LV3 GM EcoTec3 4300 V6 285 hp (213 kW) @ 5300 RPM 305 lb·ft (414 N·m) @ 3900 RPM

2014- 5.3 L L83 GM EcoTec3 5300 V8 355 hp (265 kW) @ 5600 RPM 383 lb·ft (519 N·m) @ 4100 RPM

2014- 6.2 L L86 GM EcoTec3 6200 V8 420 hp (313 kW) @ 5600 RPM 460 lb·ft (624 N·m) @ 4100 RPM

I test drove a 2014 CC LT Z71 Silverado, with 5.3. I could feel a difference between the 14's 5.3 & the one in my '12 Tahoe. I LOVED the new truck!! I also test drove a '14 LTZ Z71, oooooh baby!!! I DO miss driving a pick up!! I also very much LOVE my Tahoe. I hope you get the truck YOU really want; don't settle.

I had a 2008 Vette too but have been driving a '09 4WD Suburban. I have a TruckVault in it with the 3rd row seats removed so it's 5' long...with LOTS of stuff in it. That really makes the SUV very heavy & I miss the power of the Vette. I have a Denali on order with the 6.2 for that very reason. I think the new truck will still get better milage than the Suburban but wish it didn't need premium gas.

The larger engines are very capable of getting great milage if you can keep your foot out of it. That '08 Vette will get 30 mpg on the highway at 70 mph on a relatively flat highway.

Do we know for sure that the EcoTec3 6.2 needs premium gas?

From what I've read, the 6.2 will run OK on regular but needs premium to really take advantage of the engine's capabilities & best mileage. If I'm going to pay the frieght for the larger engine, I'm going to put premium in it. I just hope they build it soon.

Several couples who had Vettes when I had mine (5 of since '99) used to go to ALMS races. The last one I went to in the '08 C6 was in Atlanta during the terrible gas shortage. We had to run them on regular because there was no premium available. I could definately tell a difference in power & there was slight knocking on the hills getting to the track.

just remember if you run E85 in the 5.3 you're at 380hp, and around here E85 is only $2.40 per gallon

When I upgrade trucks im getting the 6.2, tired of settling for whats on
the lots. And I have a SC'd and cammed Camaro SS. You may regret
getting the 5.3, but you know you wont regret the 6.2. Read the posts of those who waited for it, they are all grins.

I am at the point of waiting now, wife even said it today to not settle and that she is not budging on doing the deal until we sell the Vette. She keeps me in check at times....lol

Dealer wasn't happy when I said I wanted to order originally, but that is because they want the sales for their bonuses, we all know that. I still think the best bet is to wait, I think the 6.2l truck will still do way better than the current 5.3 truck I have and I will get the best of both worlds, better gas mileage and the power I want. Plus by the time I add in exhaust, CAI and a tune the 6.2 will prob be closer to 450hp and have all of the features I want.

I've been finding conflicting info on fuel required for 6.2 EcoTec, but finally found something better than info on a media site.

gm powertrain says premium recommended:

http://www.gmpowertrain.com/VehicleEngines/PowertrainProducts.aspx

Can anyone verify thru literature/website for Sierra or Silverado?

They said on another thread that its recommends 93/91 however he mentions the phrase, regular unleaded fuel can cause knocking. So it sounds like you can run either but a disclaimer is builtin.

You are trying to talk yourself into a truck you know is underpowered. Get the 6.2 and don't live with regrets and disappointment.

the 5.3 is not underpowered even when compared to the 6.2, I think thats the wrong terminology. The 6.2 has more power and will be quicker and more torquie. But your still talking about an engine in a half ton application so regardless its a 1/2 ton truck and its capabilites as an actual truck are more hinged on its frame and size then engine. Now granted a certain engine package may not be for you and one package might offer more for what you need, but I dont think the 5.3 is underpowered, now I do think the case could be made for the 4.3 being underpowered in the half ton application. which would be like putting a 5.3 in a 3/4 ton, which sad to say but I think youll see it one day. Dont get me wrong the 6.2l is a great engine, but when you look at holistically in a half ton application are you really getting a night and day difference in performance of the truck, I would say probably not.

It all depends on what you want, some guys like a truck and might never put anything more than groceries in the back thats fine. For me its the truck is a tool and I use it for its designed purpose, if I didnt me personally I could find better ways to spend 40-50k on a vehicle. If I wanted a monster truck that could have all the power in the world it wouldnt be a 1/2ton with a gas engine regardless of what the engine was.
