900 Owner on the fence

I'm really up in the air about this truck. I want one but I keep going back and forth. Trolling this forum doesn't help. I have a solid 2008 that is

almost paid for. The urge is stronger than ever. For the 900 guys debating, what is holding you up?

My 2014 is super nice and I love it. However, if i hadn't sold my 2008 3.5 years ago, I doubt I would have made the plunge into a 2014 now. A solid 2008 with no payment and already modded to my preferences would be way more appealing. Given that I didn't have a truck and needed one and was going to end up with a payment one way or the other, I went with the 2014 rather than a leftover 13, or even a used truck.

Given that you have a truck already, is the K2xx platform nicer than the 900? I think it is, but it's but it's nicer in an evolutionary way, rather than a revolutionary way. I'm not sure it would be worth it to me in your shoes.

that's my $.02

the only thing that would be stopping me if i was in your shoes would be the truck payments. i had a 12 that my dad took over the payments and i got his 06 avalon and traded that in for a 14. dont regret it one bit. favorite thing about these trucks being inside the drivers seat driving it. seriously the way all the buttons look and the screens it's like im flying a air craft. lol but seriously the inside is so much better than the gmt 900.

the steps in the rear bumper are the best things about these trucks  lol

The worst thing you could do when considering anything is to hang around these forums. They're all, ALL, going to lean toward complaints. I'm not saying some aren't justified, but I think you'll see a disproportionate number of complaints or issues.

There may be other reasons keeping you from pulling the trigger, and i'd pay more attention to those! Good luck

My buddy has a 2013 and the difference between his and mine is night and day, especially the interior. Only you can decide if the price diff is worth it. I love my new truck.

They are rolling out over 1,000 of these new trucks each day. As said above ...complaints will always come up when you mass produce this much.

I have the 2014... love it. 2013 isn't even close to being in the same league.

I agree^ these trucks are a whole new ball game. Best and quietest ride of any vehicle I've driven. Plenty of power for the normal commute with the 5.3 to while getting 19 mpg.

I had an 11 gmt900 extended cab... waited fr the 14's as I wanted a 5.3 and a crew cab.... found a 2010 used instead. I just liked the GMT900 better, some of my stuff carried over to the new truck and I saved 15 grand over a comparable new truck. I love the 14's but I made the smart choice for me. You'll have to do that for yourself.

2 car payments is the main reason. Need to pay off the car and van then I will consider. The other thing is I would like to see in the coming years is if the 2500's will get the 6.2

I proudly own a '13 GMC, after looking at the '14's. For the $15k more, it was not worth it. The same basic chassis, 6 speed 6L80E, front suspension was utilized. The '14 interior, while better in some ways, looks too '80's S10 to me, especially the dash. I don't like the extended cab with the RAM like dinky forward opening doors. The performance difference vs. the Vortec 5.3 is not spectacular. The direct injection 5.3 is noisy. The hood is too tall, and the K2 Sierra looks bloated.

What I do like are the LED bed lights, upper bed tie down hooks, separate cargo lamp switch, rear discs, easy lift and lower gate, and the telescoping column.

Yeah - I think you could probably take care of your "like" list on your '13 GMC and keep within a $15,000 budget.

The 14' 1500's are too expensive right now.. I personally would rather pay 50k plus for a 3/4 loaded diesel then a halfton. Got one for a little more then a loaded 14' 1500

My 08 was paid off last Feb. Need to replace the wife's Envoy first, but that will go to the kids since they are learning to drive now. So that is a new payment for the wife's new vehicle when we find one. By the time that is paid off, I will be looking at college expenses, so I need to keep mine for a few more years. But the best part is that I love my truck!

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
