All Terrain Painted Bumper Chips

The bumper is only half the problem... remember the grill is also painted and will chip just as easily. Again, I only have a few small chips in 5K miles ... but one of them was on the painted grill. So far, I have just been touching up the paint as needed. you can't see any chips.

 

This chiping shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. I know that I thought about this a lot before ordering the AT package. I knew in advance this could be an issue. But decided I had to have the AT... we all know it looks the best!

 

Just get some OEM touch up paint, don't tailgate or get a clear bra..

Do you work for GM? Why do you defend the issue?

I was talking too my linex guy yesterday they have a new color match paint coming out that will not chip or scratch. I'll be getting my bumper done as soon as it comes out I'll report back.

The problem is on the older GM trucks too.. I have a GMT 900 denali with a painted front bumper and after 5 k miles there was quite a few chips on the hood and bumper. None since clear bra install

thank you for this post, I am so frustrated with GM as I am having the same problem. black 2014 gmc all terrain front metal bumpers paint is chipping off in flecks about dime size or better. Local Dealer said tough and im sol. Dealer sold it to me said bring it back and he would see what he could do but it sounds like rock chips. I've had 30 trucks never had a bumper look like this. Anyone find resolution to this? What a sad representation by gm.

No its not some kind of chip protection vinyl.

 

This is how the paint process works, bare metal, primer, sealer, basecoat(paint) and clearcoat. Its the CLEARCOAT thats causing the problems. GM is using a diffrent CHEAPER supplier. Clearcoat is the most expensive process in painting and results in the most savings for any auto manufacturer. GM is using "shitty" clear as well as "shitty" frame coating on these new trucks resulting in a benefit to their bottom line.

No, they actually used gravel guard protective coating under the paint. The distinct orange peel texture and thickness of coating is clearly visible. GM used to do this along the bottom portion of doors on cars in the past. You cannot mistaken this coating for normal paint.

 

And I agree about GM being cheap about clearcoat - my clearcoated truck wheels are a good example. They started pitting the week after I got the truck.

Question. did any of you get that simonize glass coat on your trucks when bought new? i paid the extra 500 since i got a black truck and i belive i got hosed big time. it deff didnt protect against some rock chips.. i dont know if it was supposed to but even little scratches it didn't protect against.

You must have missed the part where I said "frame coating" I didn't specify what it was, but in a previous post I assumed they were using Proform's Wax based frame coating, which feels just like the stuff thats on GM trucks. According to your assumption of using "gravel guard protective coating" I can tell you that it goes on more like paint and sticks much differently. I work in this industry and used both extensively. Buy some WAXED based frame coating and you will understand.

These extras they offer you for hundreds of dollars are nothing but a huge scam - you would have done just as well if you had bought a $ 10 bottle of premium wax and waxed your truck yourself. If you want to protect against gravel chips, you need a solid barrier, like plastic film or a plastic bug shield for the edge of hood.
