What are you towing with your 2014?

Thanks Jon, good write up! But are the Timbrens, Super Springs, and Torklift Stableloads all solving the problem the same way as air bags? I like those options better simply because of their simplicity, but if airbags are the way to go, then that's where I'll go.

Porpoising is usually caused by not enough load restoration on the front axle...then again the front suspension is woefully under damped imo. I adjusted my front fender height back to stock which gave me the normal float and a completely level rig. Then I added superspring ssa8 with polypad and extended shackles to add more rate to the rear axle. When not towing I use the bottom hole on the back to keep the rake and ride like factory. When towing I use the middle hole. These trucks are begging for better shocks on the front imo.

 

Are they all doing basically the same thing...yes. timbrens are simply install and forget...but your travel will be reduced. Bags are more complicated but very quick to adjust..there are cautions about axle drop causing issues. Supersprings take about 15 minutes to adjust but I only do it at the beginning and end of the season. No limits on axle travel.

I had talked to a representative at SuperSprings before when I was asking them about the SumoSprings. He recommended the SuperSprings over the SumoSprings as well. Their website shows the Polypads are for Fords, are they also for GMCs? Do the SuperSprings dampen out the bouncing on rough highways? Have you upgraded the shocks at all? I ordered some Bilsteins for the rear that I haven't put on yet.

There's a British accented dude that I dealt with there that helped me set everything up properly. The bracket is what the catalogue called for but with the ssa8 it was too much preload (great if you're always loaded)and the butt was too high when unloaded. The gentleman in ca said the ideal spring is the ssa6 with bracket. It did help by keeping the rear end from compressing too much so the interaction between the trailer and truck is optimized. Negative on shocks I want to do the 5100s.

I would be very leery about pulling 5th with these things...but I guess as long as you're safe it's all good.

just remember the SWB CC isn't supposed to tow a 5th wheel. In owners manual and with most pin setups it won't seat...but will bust rear window since not enough room.

I have a 2014 Sierra 1500 AT with a 5.3L and a 3.42 rear end. I am looking at buying a 28ft travel trailer the weighs 4700 lbs. dry. I imagine I will add another 750 - 1000 lbs of gear to the trailer. I also plan to add a weight distribution hitch. I am wondering if anyone has experience with this type of load and can provide me some insight on how my truck will pull this trailer and if you think I should upgrade to a 6.2L. Thanks!

I think u will be fine, take into account the amount of towing u will do, and the terrain u will tow? I tow 10k, and my 05 did it, I can't wait to tow the boat with the new truck, with that said if I towed more frequently or in a hilly terrain I would have went 6.2 or 3/4 ton,

5th wheel is much better balanced on the truck and does walk side to side, I would take one over a bumper pull all day any day! Having said that I would not have a super heavy one as we are talking half tons here...

i have a 2014 DC 6 foot box and now pull a travel trailer rated at 5800 lbs loaded i would think ,

pulls it fantastic,never over 2800 rpm even in hills

makes my old 08 (same config) look like a joke,

this is why i am looking at a samll 5th wheel,rated at no more than 8-8500lbs max

We are going to Daytona for speed week and the 500. Camping in the infield for the week. I am adding the air lift load lifter 5000 ultimate bags to the truck before the trip. Will post up pics after the install.

    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?  
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
