Free Oil Change Issue?

These trucks also take a synthetic blend so the oil is capable of lasting longer. If you're using conventional oil then I would stick with 3,000 miles to be safe. Synthetic blend: 5,000 to be safe. Full synthetic and no reason you can't go 7500 between oil changes. Full synthetic is rated to go much further so changing it at 7500 is still playing it safe.

Yes, Synthetic Blend. I wanted to get that first one over with, to get any break in debris out of there. I'm not going 7500 miles between changes. My OLM was at 51% on the first one, and I think 50% on the second. Forgot to look when I got there, and they didn't write it down like the first one.

The days of changing oil at 3000 miles has been gone for over a decade now. I go anywhere from 5000-7500 miles on mine. I make sure the oil is at the right level and drive it. My dealer tried to say something about the miles as well, but they went ahead and changed it for me anyways.

Yeah, maybe for some. Old Dog, needs to learn new tricks thing. LOL I have ran several vehicles with conventional oil well over 200K that were not using or burning oil, so it's hard to get out of that mindset.

My dealer told me (and others have stated elsewhere on this forum) that GM changed their policy.....it is now 4 oil changes in 2 years. Anytime. Any Mileage. If I want to do all 4 in 6 months that is fine, but more than 4 I pay.

Good to know! I'll check that out on my next change. Might as well use GM's Warranty oil changes first, then my dime.

Thanks guys for the info!

Took mine in with no issues. 5k mi and about 35% remaining. Done and tires rotated.

New engine has collapsible lifters, the new oil has dextos a detergent added to keep them clean so they don't get clogged up.

A failed clogged lifter is a failed cam, failed engine!

Follow the oil change guide or you might pay dearly.

just my 2 cents worth

Dexos not "Dextos"

Also Dexos is not a detergent, it is a specification/classification

For you old dogs out there, you may want to read this article by Edmunds on oil changes for newer vehicles.

http://www.edmunds.com/car-care/stop-changing-your-oil.html

Some excerpts from the article:

"Stop Changing Your Oil"

Oil technology has changed enormously over the last 30 years making the 3,000-mile oil change unnecessary in nearly all vehicles.

...

One GM car Edmunds drove went 13,000 miles before the monitoring system indicated the need for an oil change. We sent a sample of that oil to a lab for analysis. The results showed that the oil could have safely delivered at least another 2,000 miles of service.

I'll go off the monitoring system for my new 2015 Sierra.

Called my dealer for my first oil change after 6 months of owning my truck. Mileage was 4000km and oil life meter was like 37%. They booked me an appointment right away, no questions asked.

I saw that article... I agree. There is no reason to change the oil every 3k.. The dealers just try and con people into servicing so they can make money... I go about 8 to 9k on Mobil 1 synt. between changes in my Cruze and have never had an issue

Yah I got Shi* from my dealer too saying they cant do it unless it was 20% or lower. This while I was at 34% and after 6500 miles. I told him I was going on a long trip and needed the oil changed. Because I lied, he did it. Sheesh ...its a nice sell or catch phrase when they say free maint. however really it dont mean much . ( just like ther others )

I got my free oil change a 1K miles because I am a believer of getting early metal out of the system. Whether it is needed or not is another thread. Dealership gave me no problems. They even went as far as saying GM used to require the OLM to read down to about 20% but they backed off on that about a year ago because they realized not everyone can make it in at to the dealership specific interval, or drive their vehicles that much.

I've always wondered why some dealers make a big fuss about the oil life % especially since anyone can reset it at any time. If any dealership ever gives me grief I will inform them that I accidentally reset it at (whatever % makes it equal under 20).

My dealer put a sticker in my truck showing to come back in 6 months or 6000 miles, so even if I'm not close % wise I will just show them that. However I think my dealer is more down to earth than what I read about on here.

Toyota did this to me on my wife's van. Had 3 free oil changes, I wanted fresh oil at 3k they went on and on about how it was special synthetic oil and they won't change unless I had 10K miles. Finally they agreed to change it and I have never been back. Mobil 1 is special enough for me

dropped mine off this morning with 20% life left and they had no problems. In fact that's my second change with the first coming when I was around 30%. It must be up to the dealer to specify.

The 'free' changes that GM provides can be performed at any dealer, just like all other warranty work. If your dealer doesn't want to do help, it might be time to select a new service department.

"FREE?" If anyone thinks that you have not already paid for these oil changes when you bought your truck then you are crazy. Go to another dealer. Someone will be glad to get your business.

    • We've been fans of the 40-20-40 front seat in the lower trims; specifically the leather option on the "3-across" version of the  40-20-40. I hope this can still be ordered in the "Silverado" or RST trim packages.  AND .... if dual exhausts are a part of the Custom trim,  does that mean a V8 package is available on Customs ?  Has the RST trim been discontinued ?  When ordering a V8 on one of these lower trims .... must it be the 5.7 ?  Or, on 4WD units can the 6.6 be ordered ?
    • I like it.   In a world of vehicle front ends that look like they've had a little too much nipping and tucking, I appreciate that GM went with a bold and professional look for the new Silverado and kept the aggression understated. The new 1500 looks a little more like the current 2500.   The interior looks well done as usual, although I'm not a fan of billboard screens on the dash. At least recess the gauge cluster screen. I see passenger screens as "keeping up with the Joneses'" in automotive interiors of late, which is fine. I don't think they belong in most pickups, but choice is good. Maybe some day I'll appreciate having one. Probably not, but, maybe.   Yet another steering wheel and airbag design. I wonder what it costs to have so many different models of airbags and buttons and steering wheel frames. IMO, pick a good one and stick with it. The new one is very...luxurious...looking. Again, not bad, but also not what I'd expect in a pickup.   GM has left us awaiting engine choice announcements and official details.     What will I be ordering on day one?   Nothing. I like my 2025 and it would be silly to get rid of it just to have a 2027.
    • I'm also waiting to see if they confirm Apple CarPlay, because I'm not interested in subscription fees just to use the hardware I already purchased.    In closeups it looks like it gets the Colorado/Canyon center screen based headlight controls which I despise. They also appear to lose all the hard switches for functions like seat heating and cooling, parking sensors, lane control, traction control, etc. which means they're all screen/menu based, so verdict is out on how well those will work with gloves or wet/dirty hands.  Admittedly they don't show the left knee area of the dash, but I don't see hard switches for locker control on the ZR2, and the "mode" switch appears to eliminate the rotary dial with a quick way to access tow/haul.  My 2021 has had multiple screen failures and at times the screen just locks up, goes black, or reboots while driving even after replacement, so loosing the ability to access many of these functions, especially lighting control would be pretty frustrating.   There aren't enough photos or detailed trim details other than one mention of "available microfiber trim" to confirm, but the use of microfiber on the seats and or center console is a deal killer for me.  Just because you drive a ZR2 or High Country, doesn't mean you don't work out of it, and that material is difficult at best to keep clean and looking decent.   Lexus and several other brands are using it on seats, dash, and door panels now, I assume as a cost and weight saving measure,  and it looks horrible 1-2 years into ownership.  I see what appears to be piano black on the doors and center console in some photos, which also has no place in ANY vehicle in my opinion because it mars and scratches too easily, especially for a truck.  Will be interesting to see what GMC comes out with when the Sierra is released as far as materials go.
    • Im a fan.  Simply moving the screen up helps the look of the interior.  I feel like GM dropped the ball on the current gen having the screen not at the same level as the top of the gauge cluster.  The GMCs look better with the vents above the screen to close that gap.
    • I hear you, its just not something one would even think of that the new oil in the container isn't filtered to a spec one would expect it to be.    As to a passenger vehicle theme and the maintenance requirement to meet to ensure a warranty is honored, these days with claims of life time transmission fluid on some models and the limited amount of oil changes that would bring one to the end of the factory warranty, that sells vehicles for those that like to hear "easy care maintenance free", but the manufacturer certainly knows different as to what that more than likely means for the longevity of some of the components if given that minimum spec maintenance. Then again I imagine there are a fair number of people that really don't care as long the vehicle gets them a certain number of years down the road because they are the type that want the next new thing, new and improved ... more bells and crap etc on the new one on the show room floor. Manufacturers have learned the phycological game to entice the customer out of their money !
