Speed governor?

the few ruin it for the majority. the idea that safety devices harm us needs to be old thinking. seat belts save lives, but the same people think they should be optional and not forced on you by government agencies. sorta like the same people that want to complain when they eat something that makes them sick, but hate government agencies like FDA. closed minded thinking. look at a bigger picture here than just "i want to go fast cause i want to".

If it was a safety device that would be one thing, its there because of the tires. We will leave the tire deal for some other thread. My Geneses, Trailblazer SS. 94 Impala, 01 Acura Integra, 92 Chevy p/u will go well pass the governed speed of my truck. With the exception of the Geneses, I feel much safer at high speeds in my truck. Oh and the FDA, they haven't been doing such a good job lately, like most Government agencies I would feel much better if it was handle by private companies. With exception of the police and Military of course. Closed minded would be trusting the Government. Ive gone as far as Im going to go in this thread, Im sure we will debate in another one.

why should you need to pass someone that is going 75mph? your excuses for governor arent really valid. its just your opinion that you dont like it, and thats fine. there just is no valid reason for a vehicle to need to go faster than 98. in fact my 2001 ford had a 95mph governor and i hit it often on I95 in miami trying to stay out of peoples way. that is the fastest traffic flow i've ever been on. that and the jersey turnpike. but i digress, you do not need to go faster than 98 and even if the governor were 90, it wouldn't bother 95% of the public.

That is not for you or the manufacturers to decide how fast we want to drive our vehicles. Your excuses to justify the govenor are strictly opinion and are invalid as well. The only reason it is there is for lawsuits, plain and simple. GM has a taken "our governments" mentality in thinking they know what's best for us better than we do.

I live in Texas and drive I-10 quite regularly where the speed limit is 80mph. With that said, if you don't drive 85+mph, you will not stay with the flow of traffic, so yes there are occasions where excessive speed maybe needed. Once again though, that should be our choice as consumers as to how fast we want/need to drive, not GM's.

I agree with you. But at the same time I guess I fail to find a situation where you would need to take a vehicle above 98-100mph specially in a vehicle like a SUV or truck where you probably shouldnt.

You are probably correct. But, we are adults who can make decisions for ourselves. That is for nobody to decide, but me. What's the point of having all the power of a 6.2, but limiting it with speed limiters and torque management B.S.?

I-10 in Texas was 80 m.p.h. when I was down there. In Texas, when driving in the right lane or on two lanes, folks get over onto the shoulder when you approach from the rear, to allow you to pass. I'm from Colorado and used the left lane to pass, so I was easily getting up over ninety as I was passing. I-84 in Utah also has an 80 m.p.h. speed limit too. In California driving over 90m.p.h. seems to be the only way to keep from being run over, L.A. or S.F. rush hours excepted.

I don't think East Coast people can relate to how it is out here. We have plenty of 75 m.p.h speed limits through the curves in the Rockies and do another 5 to 10 m.p.h. quite safely. Unfortunately the folks making the rules don't always know this.

The only thing I will say about it is. The state sets a speed limit to keep all safe, now whether that speed is to fast or two slow thats debateable. But we all know its set 5-10mph slower as if they raised it, people would only go faster than that. And I will say yes everybody can make their own decisions, but going way faster than your supposed to say 90 in a 65 puts others in potential danger, which at that point I dont beleive you have the choice to unwillingly put others in danger. But to that I would say going 40mph on a expressway is just as bad.

Torque management and hp management a lot of times is dummy proofing, without it people would be tearing up other parts of the vehicle, such as the trans, suspension, etc.

I 100% agree with you about putting others lives endanger, if I chose to do it, it's on me. As far as dummy proofing, if GM is going to make engines with this kind of power, they should put parts in it that will hold up to the power levels.

All companies do that especially with deisels. A lot of times the motor could really outperform the truck regardless of what you did to it. To top it off adding better parts all around could very well raise the price a lot higher which in turn you wouldnt get any buyers. I was in the army and tanks could go only go like 50-55, as they were governed without that they could do something like 70mph, but when they did that soldiers were melting down the engines and cutting the already atrocious 300 miles per tank to a lot less.

It doesn't bother me one bit that GM (or whichever manufacturer) governs the truck to 98 MPH.

I don't think it's really on-point to say "I'm a big boy, so I should get to decide how fast I want to go" or similar.

GM decided that the truck will go no faster than 98 MPH for many reasons. That's their call, just like it doesn't come in pink. Some other cars are governed too, and some are not.

I say just buy what you want that fills your needs and desires.

P.S. I'm a contractor, and there are lots of things my clients want that we just won't do.

I don't get this whole, its my life I'll do what I want. What do you think about the teenager thats doing 115 on the interstate, loses control, and crashes into a car carrying a family and kills people? You'll be begging for the government agencies then, asking them to dole out millions so that future incidents like that won't happen.

Too many people are caught up in this, government is bad and holding me back. You need to think about the times the government is saving your ass from someone else. Case in point? Texting and driving. I hate the government as much as the next redneck, but at some point you have to find a happy medium when it comes to protecting your life from idiots who don't care about their own much less anyone else's.

How about making people responsible for they're actions in situations that they create. An eye for an eye. Instead they have to serve a few years & get out. No matter what you think or do you can't engineer out stupidity but maybe make the penalty so high like death if your actions cause the same then just maybe others would stop & think of this before hand.

Looks good on paper but people still murder that wasn't an accident even though they know it's a chance they will spend the rest of their life in prison. Also it's not just someone paying for their on actions, what about the innocent people that die because of someone else not caring. Not even a week ago in my town there was wreck and an innocent girl got killed and she was younger than me. Just like how I knew a girl a little younger than me about 10 years ago where a drunk driver ran a light and killed her while she was driving. I myself can deal with repercussion of my own actions but then I realized that some of the stuff I used to do could get other people hurt or killed and I couldn't live with myself.

Actually, that is not true. All motorcycles are governed at 300 kph (186 mph) worldwide. It is very difficult to defeat the speed controls, as they are built into the architecture of the OS of the bikes.

This is because European countries threatened even more draconian actions to slow them down-- several years ago.

I don't think supercars (basically street legal race cars) have speed controls. Cars like the Veyron, the McLaren, even the most high performance Corvettes.

Trivia: at top track speed, the Veyron will run out of fuel in about 15 minutes, as designed, to keep the tires from disintegrating.

A Cadillac CTS-V modified by Hennessey wwent 220 MPH on a Texas toll road to test the ability of the gantry-mounted cameras to photograph a license plate at speeds like that.
