Speed governor?

It really has to do more with lawyers than real product failure. The safety margin these days is over the top.

Not really. V6 Mustang, limiter 112 MPH. Tune allowed it to be disabled and catastrophic failure at 135.

 

 

Tons of dyno vids of fullsize trucks spitting out driveshafts too. Removing the limiter and running above it is stupid, plain and simple.

Maybe he's right about it having to do with lawyers...after the loss of a tuner's right arm from the driveshaft coming thru the floor, he'll probably be looking for a lawyer.

Its because the tires are only rated for a certain speed and if they go over the tire can blow and the tire companies will be sued. I had no idea the DS could come through the floor and into the cab

Im not saying its safe at all times to speed, really. But saying the drive shafts and tires cant handle it is just not true. We used to go back and forth from NJ to the west coast often thru the desert in the 60s and 70s on bias ply tires and 100 degree heat at 100mph plus. The oldest car I remember was a 55 buick special, I was seven. I remember it was so hot. I could mention many Buicks, Pontiacs, even big block trucks cruising easily at 120 back in the day. Now your going to say we were just lucky or technology went backwards, not buying it. Just go to the local drag strip on bracket night and watch those stock or slightly modified cars and trucks going threw the lights at 120 plus and then drive home, most with no drive shaft loops. I know a little red express truck that's been doing it since 1979 same drive shaft. He started stock with 160 HP now he is over 600 same shaft, he did add a loop for the HP not the speed. The cars and trucks are safer at high speeds today, its the people and that in most places there are just too many so its not safe. When we messed up back in the day it was our fault, today when someone messes up its GM, Goodyear etc., and here comes the lawyers. That's why your truck stops at 100 MPH and no other reason.

You're assuming GM would put a limit speed at the critical speed for the driveshaft. Not likely. Engineers always use a conservative "fudge factor" or "margin". Engineering folks always use the "worse case" and start there.

 

Look, nobody has a legitimate reason to drive over 100mph in one of these trucks on the street. Track racing is a different story and real organized racers learn quickly about the safety issues of a particular vehicle. I think that was what that driveshaft maker was conveying in his website.

my 2014 with the 6.2l and 3.42 gears was set at 98mph from the factory. I have since removed it, while I have no plans on topping the truck out I do like to be able to pass someone on the highway if I need to. We take my truck at times and drive on some interstates with 80mph so passing speeds can creep up.

 

If GM had put a more realistic speed limit I think most would be happier, but alas in this world with sue happy people the lawyers step in with their input and this is what we end up with instead.

I was trying to use a more colloquial term.

 

I thought someone had posted a video of a Dodge truck that the driveshaft came thru the floor on.... It was up well over 100mph. The guy had the nerve to make a warranty/insurance claim and not take responsibility for his own actions.

Right. If you can't pass someone on the interstate driving 80 mph while being limited to 98 mph, something is wrong with you. No need for anyone besides law enforcement and other emergency vehicles to be going above 80 mph, since that is the highest posted speed limit I'm aware of in the States. I wont even get into lifted trucks going that fast down any road, interstate our otherwise.

The fasted interstate speed I've had and remember was 70 which is right where I live and the fasted I've gone to pass someone was 85 but that was a really quick pass, like trying to pass someone especially an 18 wheeler that are swerving. Normally I just go 5 over so I stay at 75 and just end up passing the slower cars than me. I don't see a reason to go above 90 for any reason.

Im a big boy and rather make my own choices, and pay for my own mistakes. Ive been that way since I was seventeen, a looooong time ago. Another reason I moved from Jersey to Texas. I don't need a big brother or Government looking out for me. Im glade your happy being restrained Im not. Next thing you know there will be a governor on your water at 20 psi.,to cut down your use. See a pattern?

The limiter is to save idiot drivers from themselves, and more importantly the innocent victims. . I suppose it is OK to drink a twelve pack and jump behind the wheel and drive on public roads too? Because you are entitled to risk everyone else's life, just like driving too fast?
