Chevy Silverado Eroding Ford F-150 Market Share

Buying a new truck for 1st time since the late '80's, I started at Ford as it had been the last brand of truck I previously owned.

 

I began by test driving the F-150 XLT Lariat Platinum edition with it's highly promoted 3.5L V6 EcoBoost and was not impressed with the performance. Then the 5.0 liter that felt overly sluggish to me, and finally a Raptor 6.2L which was an impressive power plant installed in what to me was an overly stiff suspension and not a style of truck for me. I knew that climbing into the Raptor but figured I'd give it a try. I guess I'm more "old school" and felt I needed (and wanted) a powerplant with the HP and torque a big V-8 affords.

 

Not attracted to the styling of either the Tundra or Ram trucks, I then drove a GMC dealership wherein I walked straight up to a fully loaded Black K1500 SLT. Ended up test driving it, followed by a 6.2L Denali in White. 2-hrs later, I drove off in the new Denali and have never looked back. The black was a beauty but I knew that keeping it clean would be a chore. I'd learned from prior ownership of black vehicles one of which I still own today.

 

The white Denali with its black interior sitting on top of the 6.2L L86 V8 is proving to be a great truck for me. I also appreciate it's brute appearance as evidenced here with a 2" front leveling and up-sized tires...

Looks are subjective, no Fords on my property. I'm sure glad I didn't have to settle for a Ford.

The Ford buyers are having some issues. Doors not sitting flush with the rest of the body, air leaks around the doors and windows, water leaks in the moon roofs, rear armrests that won't go back into their seat backs as designed. Not to mention the amount of money they are asking for the things. Our trucks are superior and cheaper, why would anyone buy a Ford knowing that?

I lurk the f150 forums. I see some pretty funny complaints too. Like the sunrise visor flapping in the wind when the windows are open. Lol

It doesn't bother me a bit who sells more trucks. That's Ford's claim. Chevy claims to be the longest lasting truck. Hmmm, what would be best for me, having the same band as everyone else, or a truck that lasts longer? No brainer for me. Turbos run HOT! Heat kills engines. I drove my '98 for sixteen years with no real problems. I think GM is best for me, I never was one to be "trendy."

I have had three Chevys, and three fords. The last two trucks I had were F150's. 2001 and 2009. The 2001 had the drivers front wheel cave in at 45k... As I was getting off the highway. I felt a little shake in the steering wheel then a nice long skid. Then the day before deer season two years ago, the center bearing falls apart on the 2009, at 60k. I don't pull a lot and mostly have the trucks for my size and a project here and there.

 

I won't go back to fords. To each there own I guess but those break downs are huge in my book. My ranger was bulletproof but I grew out of that.

 

First truck was a 81 4x4 straight six Chevy and the second was a Silverado v6. Then I got the suburban. Never had issues with them, no parts falling off. That's why I went with a Chevy this time.

The Yahoo article told a different story... the only reason sales are up is because of Ford's supply problem. As the second plant comes online this month, they will kill GM. Average 2015 Ford is selling for $2000 more than last year and an average of less than 12 days on the lot.

It's 17 days according to PUTC. The Colorado Crew Cab was the fastest selling truck in February averaging 15 days on the lot. The 2015 Silverado 1500 Crew Cab was one of the slowest selling trucks.

I did not look at F-150s when looking for a new truck. My brother and father in law have them and I just didnt love them. It came down to Ram or GMC for me and the GMC dealer offered me $6500 more for my trade so that was a no brainer. I also feel like there are so many F-150s out there that you kind of just blend in if you have one.

I'm currently truck shopping. I'm not loyal to any brand, don't really care. To be honest, there just isn't that much of a difference between any of the three I drove. I was within a hair of buying a GMC the last week of February, hoping the dealer would move the last bit we were apart in price on the last weekend of the month. It sold to someone else instead. After rebates reset this month, it looks like the Ram is the best deal for the money.
