Lets see a pic of your trip from today to next week. In a week. Any 1 can ho drive 4, 20 miles on the highway and and start a trip vount going 50 mph like im dure your doing an get those numbers. .... show me miles after a week

No I did not. Did really feel like taking the intake manifold off again if you know what I mean.

 

 

Yes there was oil covering the inside of the intake.

 

 

I thought about doing something like this too but I think it might be pretty difficult. On the inside of the intake manifold, the runners aren't easily accessible because of a cylinder that starts at the throttle body and goes about half way back. Here is a picture from PickUPS in the "Oil Catch can?" thread showing the inside of his intake manifold. This is on a 4.3 but the 5.3 is similar. I don't want to discourage you from trying to get a camera down to the intake valves but just wanted to let you know that it might be tricky. If you get it to work let me know as I would be interested in getting one of those cameras then.

I know what you mean. The runners intersect the plenum at a right angle to the throttle body inlet also. It's a longshot, but I ordered a $35 borescope 1 meter long. I can always pull a plug and look at a valve that's open to see how bad my engine looks. More toys.

Just got a call from the dealership, they're ordering me a new a catalytic converter.

got this from the FAQ on the seafoam website take it for what it is worth......

I added a can of Sea Foam to about 12 gallons of gas in the tank of my 2002 Grand Marquis, then used ½ can of the spray in the intake. Now my car shows a “check engine” light that was not previously on. Did the Sea Foam somehow cause this? What should I do about it?

Adding Sea Foam Spray Cleaner and Lube directly into the intake will, in some cases, trigger the “check engine” light due to misfires that occur while you’re spraying. The misfiring was only temporary, and you should be able to easily turn the light off by clearing the error code.

Ok after reading this, but having now issues I tried it..... It was pretty easy but very nerve wracking to say the least. I used the CRC product since it is specific for the Valves. I sprayed it right into the Throttle Body while my Wife did the Throttle. While letting it soak, I did spray and wipe out the throttle plate area.

 

After the soak, I started the Motor but it started like shit. I backed out garage and when I drove off it was very sluggish and lots of crap out the Exhaust! My Driveway is 1200 feet long and just took it easy going down, but again very sluggish. I stopped and pulled out onto my country road which It bobbled a couple of times and get much better as I was just driving normal. Took it for a 15 drive at varying speeds and it seems fine.

 

I will no what and see long term if it had any affect...... Again, very easy but nerve wracking!!!! lol

I did the CRC before my CC install. Same conditions as you. I believe they recommend a good freeway drive after.

Strange thing happend with my wife's sonata. She has 30k miles I just put the can on. I did a whole can of crc let it set an hour and went for a spirited ride. Started normal. I pulled out into my development and when I got up to just about 3000 RPMs. I heard the loudest clicking noise as if somebody dropped a pin screwdriver or a pencil or something inside the motor. I was scared shitless but I don't normally I have no check engine lights or anything. So I made it out of the development of on the road and still when I had about 3500 RPMs a few click click click. I drove about 3 miles down to a country road and I was going to walk to see if I can hear it again. There was nothing so I got on it for a spirited ride and a few 80 mile an hour passes. No clicks no issues can't even tell the car is running at a stop sign. The same thing to my truck only get a half can since I only had 10 K miles and it had an oil CATch can on the last 5K. No issues at start up no clicks no noise in some fun country road driving it feels like the day I bought it. I am curious though about my wife sonata and that clicking. Couldn't have really been that gunked up in something broke off

This is sort of what mine did. The first start after the soak was slightly delayed, it had to turn over a few more times than it normally does on a prepped start. It was also boggy at the beginning of my drive. The more I drove it the better it got though. The 2nd drive it was a totally different truck.

Sorta on the topic, but I have a theory on the 6.2 vs 5.3 mileage. The V4 mode in the 6.2 has a larger displacement as compared to the 5.3 in the same mode. In fact, the 5.3 has the smallest displacement of all:

 

4.3: 2.87L

5.3: 2.65L

6.2: 3.1L

 

So, the theory may hold that the 6.2 may be able to produce the greatest power in V4, and would, therefore, be able to enter V4 and hold it longer since the move to/from V4 is based largely on engine demand vs output. The 6.2 maaaay have sliiiightly higher pumping/frictional losses in V4, but I bet this is negligible.

 

As V4 mode is a big player in mileage, I wonder if this is actually a GOOD element with respect to the 6.2?

The normal driver is in V4 modes 10-15% of the time - not a big contributor. So 80-90% of the time the 6.2L is gulping gas. You're assumption that the 6.2L gets better mileage in any situation but maybe towing is incorrect. You are not accurately representing highway mileage when you reset your trip computer as you enter the highway on-ramp and then use cruise control for 20 miles. I can get the same or better results with my 5.3L. If you do a quick Google search or go to FuelEconomy.gov, you will see that highway mileage is actually calculated/tested as a doorstep-to-doorstep type scenario. There are stops, starts, cruising at various speeds (slow and fast), passing, running of the AC, etc.

 

Unless you run the same test several times with similar/controlled conditions before and after your cleaning, there is no way to prove that your intake cleaning was of any significant benefit. To simply put your cruise control on 70, reset your trip computer, take a snapshot and compare it to the 5.3L is misleading.

My 5.3 with 3.08 gears on the highway, reset trip meter once at cruise speed (78mph) for 150 miles gets 19.9mpg while going down hill and 19.1mpg while going up hill. (about a 1000 ft decline/incline over 150 miles.)

 

Oddly enough, if I reset the trip meter and tool around my daily driving. I get about 19.0-19.4mpg right now.

 

Prior to the cleaning I was seeing about the same highway, but around town was 17.9-18.4mpg.

    • Is it time to put a piece of tape over the CEL? 
    • consider doing electrical testing?  I would guess some power or ground wire/connection has a problem.   alldata.com has wiring diagrams, connector pinouts and diagnostic procedures you can use to find where the problem is.
    • can you tell if the reader is actually trying to get codes, and the pcm is reporting none, or is your reader just silently failing because it's not communicating with the pcm?
    • Any joy with this truck seems to be short-lived.   The CEL for P0172 ("bank 1" too rich) is now "intermittent".   I'm not sure where to check, or re-check, and my energy to keep chasing problems with junk is wearing thin. The P0172 seems to set as I'm coming to a stop, completely off the throttle, when fully warm. At least, that's what it's done the 3? times it's set.   Everything appears normal on the scanner EXCEPT long term fuel trim. There's only one bank on this vehicle because it's an OBD 1.5 with only one upstream O2 sensor. At idle, it's around -16.4% and will dip to -18% occasionally at idle or off-throttle. LTFT approaches 0 when throttle is held at 2500rpm. Short term appears normal, much closer to zero all the time. The LTFT tells me the engine is running rich at idle but compensating at higher load. But, why?   The EVAP purge valve doesn't appear to be leaking/sucking fuel vapor continuously. Is it sticking just as I come to a stop and the engine is choking on fuel vapor and sets the P0172? But that doesn't explain the persistently negative LTFT. Disconnecting the purge valve doesn't seem to make any difference.   I suppose that leaves another dang issue with the fuel injector. A leaking fuel pressure regulator, a new leak in the spider, or a leaking fuel injector/poppet valve I didn't see, or a small crack in one of the spider legs.   The vacuum line leading to the fuel pressure regulator doesn't have raw fuel in it. It doesn't even smell like fuel when it's pulled off, not until you suck air through it, then you can tell it leads to a fuel component. I'd consider that normal? Nothing is signaling this is a FPR issue from the outside, at least.   The oil smells like fuel but it's not building volume. I've noticed most oil in most engines smells like fuel to some degree so it's hard to say if the smell is an issue or not. Or if the engine just still smells like fuel because the crankcase was full of it a few hundred miles ago. But it's been changed twice since that original issue of the leaking fuel line dumping fuel into the intake.   Patience is running very thin. Every win seems to be accompanied by two steps backwards, or another issue that leads to removing at least the top half of the intake manifold. Enough! LOL
    • First off you mentioned "Toyo Says" and then gave the pressures 45/50, was this some person at the tire shop that pulled those numbers out of his head ?   Now of course I can't know your exact axle weights front and rear, however I have much the same pickup as yourself other than not knowing your starting weight as per the pounds the truck rolled out of the factory at due to the options yours did or didn't come with or what you have added beyond the extra tire weight. The correct way to know 100% where a person is at is by weighing each axle with the typical weight the vehicle is driven with and that means taking into account passengers and making sure you figure in a full tank of fuel and a little grace for whatever you may put in the bed "groceries" !    I am looking at and not that it really matters as all the tire companies use the same charts anyway, but I am looking at the comprehensive Toyo tire chart in the section that your tire falls under and I know it sounds confusing but your tire is not an LT metric tire like your factory tire but instead because its a standard inch measured tire its under a different category called an LT floatation series tire. That makes a difference as LT metric tires they don't want to see run below 35 psi at highway speed where as with the LT floatation series it can be run down to 25 psi on the highway as long as the weight on the said size of tire is agreeable with or less than that minimum 25 psi. It blows many people away that how is this physically possible, an empty truck for one thing and larger tires with the same size wheel diameter have a lot more air volume so they can carry the same weight as the smaller tire with less air pressure.    So my truck, I have the stock 275/65R20 wheels and tires and I have a bit of weight in the box with a bak flip cover and a rubber bed mat and some tools and spare gas. The front of my gas truck weighs a bit more than some trucks of the similar spec due to double batteries and alternators. However with full fuel and just me in the truck I am weighted such that I can run 40 front and 35 rear and so that is what I have done since day one.    If I base your truck at or slightly below the weight of my truck, in theory with your tires going by the tire chart you might be right around a minimum of 30 pounds front and 25 pounds rear. Of course that would hit pretty much minimum cold inflation pressure one could run with that tire size and a near empty truck. If you have access to an accurate weigh scale to do individual front and rear axle weights I would suggest you do that and make sure your topped up with fuel and whatever else in the truck before you weigh it and then you will have a great starting point to work off of and figure out what your bare minimum pressures are you can safely run. If you do much in the way of hot weather high speed driving, bumping up a bit for a safety margin is never a bad idea but just depends on what type of driving you do. I will include the Toyo chart and the floatation series sizes start on page 31.
