roof material weaker?

I had a 2000 Silverado for 15 years and worked it pretty hard with no complaints. I fish a lot and often launch a boat solo. The ramps near my house are not very good and in the winter I would alway jump from trailer to truck bed to roof and then hood. It was a bit strange but was a great way of staying dry and I never had an issue with it.

Recently I did the same thing in my new 2015 Sierra and was shocked to see the roof cave in 2 or 3 spots . I immediately jumped off. One of the dents popped out on it's own, but the 2 others have remained. Both of them are near the onstar antenna

Anybody with any insight on if they make the roofs weaker these days?

They're much thinner to save weight. I wash washing my roof standing in the bed and my knees left 2 dents along the rear of my cab. I had a PDR guy come out and remove em for $75 shortly after.

Yeah, you're gonna want to find another way to stay dry.

also...have you gained weight lately? LOL

The roofs are not thinner............ To reduce weight they have slimmed down on the amount of reinforcements but have not actually made the roofs thinner.

I would bet the roof is thinner, everywhere else is. The high strength steel is quite thin. Definitely want to stay off the aluminum hood, you can see that waiver just in the wind on the highway.

You may need to just go buy some hip waders and maybe add some side steps. There's no need to be on the roof or hood, especially on a new truck. You should have tested the roof first with your hand and you would have seen it push down with just a finger so your whole body wouldn't have been a good idea.

No I haven't gained weight and yes I am getting side steps. I had steps on my old truck , but still used the roof method at certain depths. I really didn't think twice about it after doing it the other way for so long.

I climb to the back bumper then step around the side onto the back tire then onto the side steps. Funny how everyone has their own method of staying out of the water..

I call BS. no way in hell that just showed up on its own. Never heard of any dents on the roof till this thread. And even in this thread the dents are from him jumping on his roof to stay dry.

Lol, I'm right there with you. I saw it and was like, ummmm....

If the roof did in fact do that on its own there would be some cracked class from the chassis buckling or other signs of warping.
