Valet parking

just a side note.

Since some of you were discussing if using a cell phone while driving is legal or not, consider this:

My truck starts "yelling" at me when I put the shifter into gear and the parking brake is still engaged.

I can only assume but it's obvious that the kid was so distracted by the phone call that he didn't see the red warning light in the dash and didn't hear the sound of the warning chime.

I'd have give him an earful too.

Confronting the offender, and their supervisor, with the issue of improper operation of the vehicle and potential legal issues (being on the cell phone) is not unreasonable at all - I would absolutely do it. Pushing to have the offender fired on the spot and attempting to berate them based on what you -believe- they earn (and then passing judgment that it puts them beneath you socially) is absolutely unreasonable.

It's a federal law all commercial drivers are to be hands free behind the wheel. Fines are heavy like 2500 for driver and more for company.

I would think a valet service falls under those commercial laws.

Federal laws, state laws, county laws, and whatever else may have no impact on private property.

Where is this going when I have to tip someone before the service to get a service?

Bad advise.

Because in some peoples mind it'll become mandatory.

And they will judge how much they care based on the tip.

Educate your employees and pay them accordingly. That's my advise for employers.

It'll pay off.

Sound advice in general. However, it won't matter how much you have educated someone or how much you pay them - their level of responsibility and maturity will ultimately decice whether they execute their job appropriately or not. IMHO, this goes right back to my earlier comment about taking pride in yourself and what you do as well as understanding that EVERYTHING you say and do is a reflection of who you are as a person.

Tip before the service / product is provided? Isn't that called "the price"? Nope. Not gonna happen. Ever.

There are some people I tip before service. When go on my yearly cruise, I tip on the first day, it makes a difference it's human nature. Whenever I can identify a person who is going to serve me, I tip first makes for pleasant time.

You also have somewhat of a "captive audience" in that scenario. An initial little greasing of the wheels up front and they now see incentive to give you great service for an additional tip at the completion of the cruise. You leave $20 or $30 on the dash for valet and they couldn't care less about when the car gets retrieved.

I would never use valet parking again. Tried it once, didn't work out well.

A year or so ago we went on vacation to Miami on my brothers tundra (6 month old truck) . We stayed at the Hyatt Regency, they only had valet parking so I guess. Supposedly they inspect every vehicle when they take possession everytime you give them the keys. My brother had gone one day out to the beach with his buddies and came back dropped off the truck, hotel took possession and parked it inside their garage. I suppose parking was so full they pulled the truck out and parked infront of the hotel. Next morning we're all heading out on different vehicles cus we went in 3, and I see my brothers truck parked outside and I notice a hit on driver side back door. That wasn't there!! Right away I tell the valet drivers and they bring a manager. Like man I don't have time for this bs, I'm on vacation!! We left, they reviewed their tapes and they never see the truck get hit and we argue about don't you guys inspect them every time you get the keys. Long story short we left back home, few weeks later they sent a check for the repair. Never liked valet parking, I either park it myself or I watch them park it.

Imagine the life choices they must have made to end up as a parking attendant...

Rocket scientists, every one.

Don't sell all of them short. My oldest son valet parked for a service while he was in school here, (UT Class of 2010), and he drove some sweet rides. He made good tips.

His best story was some young rich guy (we have lots of them here) who brought a 10 to a nice restaurant in his Ferrari with the top down. .. He tipped the valet 100 bux to leave it out front. No problem. While he was wining and dining inside, two guys in an Escalade drive up, one gets out, shows the proper whatever to the valet, and leaves in the Ferrari.

The other guy stays with the Escalade.

After dinner the guy and his date come out and are driven away in the Escalade.

That's a playa if you ask me.

I don't use valet service whenever possible. Not a fan of having to pay someone to be in control of my vehicle. I'd rather walk a mile in the rain in nice clothes than have some test pilot my vehicle around when I'm not looking.

    • Great info to have, I printed out what you had in your document as well as Newdudes post as I could see this mistake with the hardware happening very often if not realizing what type of special bolts are being used and just guess on bolt size for torque or the good enough "easy" method as per whack in the used bolts with an impact and send it !.
    • I installed the Auto stop eliminator on my 21 Sierra SLT shortly after I got it. They have a detailed video instruction on how, took me about 20-30 minutes to do. I was apprehensive too to start tearing apart a new truck but it was pretty easy install. Like you mentioned get some trim tools. I went to Harbor freight and picked up a set. If you can find some install videos/instructions to give you and idea for a plan of attack you should be fine.
    • If all oil manufacturers had to meet a higher standard for not just the initial filtering of the oil but that they had to improve on their formulation so that the oil cleaned the engine such as the Valvoline R&P or the new Mobil product ( assuming it works similar of course ), and the oil was changed on an interval based on good UOA data, there shouldn't be any gremlins running around like miniture rats on top of your heads to be washed down into the oil pan below 😁

    • A while back on another thread there were comments and thoughts on air filters and I know that can tend to be a bit of a hot topic because of outfits that have a vested interest in selling aftermarket air boxes fitted with the gauze type of oiled elements touting the lower air restriction. However and unfortunately I don't know where I have seen the test results in the past about the amount of dirt through a test procedure that these style of filters do pass more dirt through than a properly designed ( not some cheap Chinese knock off ) paper/synesthetic media filter can do. Lake Speed had a conversation on that topic with one of the employees at Donaldson and there seemed to be a consensus of these oiled filters falling short in the absolute percentage of dirt holdback.    Which all ties back into how good the air filter is on the engine at keeping dirt out as that is going to reflect as a contaminant introduced into the oil as well as cylinder wear even if some of that dirt does find its way out of the exhaust rather then the crank case. Put another way that one can throw the kitchen sink at filtering the oil and using a bypass system which I fully expect will do nothing but good for the oils contamination but if the air filter system isn't doing its job then its preventing the engine from reaching the best wear/lasting case scenario instead.    Now perhaps this topic is or isn't for this particular thread but Grumpy Bear or anyone else for that matter, do you have access to some scientific trust worthy testing on engine air filter types to get some proper comparison data to post up.
