first thank you for all the advice. went with mobil 1 extended performance full synthetic & k&n oil filter. really surprised that they only used synthetic blend at dealer. also tightened u bolts while i was under there. all 8 were really "loose". actually surprised by how many turns it took to get to torque specs.

I will be having my first oil change in my new truck in about a month. When I do, it will be switched over to Amsoil. I ran Amsoil in my last vehicle, which finally died after 24 years and 4 months with 338,000 miles on it. The only reason it failed is that we lost a water hose and hubby didn't notice the temperature climbing. He toasted it. It would have been fun to see how many more miles I could have gotten out of it.

 

But the best part is .... I got a new truck out of the deal.

I was in O'Reillys the other day and saw that their store brand 0w-20 is dexos approved (also on the above post list) and was decently priced at $5.50 qt. I may go that route when my "free" oil changes are up next year.

Last time I was at Walmart, Mobil 1 0W-20 AFE was $23.88 for a 5 quart container. This would be $4.78 a quart (plus tax). I was able to send in a $12 rebate so I got it for $2.38 a quart (plus tax)!

Going with Mobil 1 and K&N filter will work great.

In the videos I've seen, M1 was the thinnest by far at -40. But I'm not sure it was thin enough to pump. It still looked pretty thick.

 

Point taken, though. I think I'd switch to M1 if I lived anywhere with exceptionally cold winters.

fpdsniper, AMSOIL is not on the dexos approved list. Yes it meets/exceeds it but it is not on the approved list by GM.

No, Amsoil is saying that is meets or exceeds Dexos1 standards, but according to the Dexos site, it is still not licensed to officially say it on their products. More than likely Amsoil and GM/Dexos haven't reach a royalty agreement. Pennzoil and a few others have gone back and forth with that licensing.

Amsoil needs to grow up and act like a real business and get their oils approved.

 

They play the same game with the TES 295 (Allison transynd') spec on the Duramax forums.

 

There must be a reason the sell using 'testimonial' evidence instead rather than documenting the quality like other oil manufacturers.

They do not need to spend the money to have their oil on the approved list. It just pads GM's pocket. It meets/exceeds the dexos1 specification. If it didn't don't you think GM would do something about it? It isn't false advertising so they can't.

 

For one, it keeps the cost of their products down since they don't have to absorb the license cost and since they are a smaller blender this makes a big difference.

 

Also, if they didn't have a quality product, then they would not still be around since they first came out in 1972 with an API (American Petroleum Institute) certified synthetic. AMSOIL was the first to market an API certified synthetic. Before anyone else. Sure there were other synthetics on the market, but they were not API certified.

For you guys who have changed your own oil already, did 8.5 qts bring it to the full line on the dipstick? The reason I ask if I just changed mine and added 8.5 qts and its a little bit above full. I figured it's alright, but I just wanted to double check.

 

Also, this is kind of a weird question, but where did you guys jack the truck up from? The plastic cover on the bottom pretty much covers up everything and makes it hard to see where is solid to jack from.
