These are GM bolts that are tapered a bit. They use them on a lot of attachments to the frame without having to tap the holes. The tapered tip allows the threads to bite when you start turning it in. These bolts are 10mm x 1.5 thread. You can use regular bolts if you tap the holes with a tap and die set.

The GM part number for these bolts is 11518341. They are listed as M10x1.5x25. Retail for 4 is $37.40 with tax.

Good to know thanks for sharing the info. Learn something new everyday. Is this why these bolts were harder to crank down than I expected?

Yep. That's why I run the bolt in before the install to tap the holes. They are a bit tough cranking them in, also tend to get a bit warm from the friction. Assembly line uses power tools to drive them.

I am learning some new stuff here as well. What do you mean by "run them in"? Also thanks for setting my mind at ease about the 2 places for the self tapping screws. Even if there isn't a dimple there I should still be able to get them in there with the help of a drill. I greased the only two zerks on the truck yesterday and checked my front/rear diff and transfer case fluids. While I was under there I checked out the transfer skid plate a little closer and it is actually very sturdy and a thicker piece of metal than I thought. Should give plenty of protection for mild off roading.

By "run them in" he is referring to putting the self tapping bolts in before installing the shield. Helps to start it straight, dont have to fiddle with shield and can see what your doing better. Then remove that self tap screw put your plate on and put the screw in again for the actual install.

Thanks for the education! I will definitely do that when I go to put mine on. Looks like it will be a few weeks before it gets here.

I ran them in with my impact gun. And then tightened with socket wrench.

eBay purchased GM skid plate package installed.

All 5 a Perfect fit. My Chevy dealer installed them while my truck was in for the door chime fix.

What is a self tapping bolt? When I hear that I think of a bolt with a sharp point designed to penetrate an area that did not already have a hole.

They will thread an extruded hole (like the one DanY) described, but don't have the drill point that a self drill/tap screw has.
