Am I Just Overreacting?

Okay so this starts off with Wed. my truck made a sound to which we thought was the starter. Looked it over and every sign made us think so and even hit the thing and the noise stopped. So I ordered one off a wrecked 2015 with 2K miles trying to save some money instead of the $300 it cost since it's not covered under warranty.

So we got a 2004 Tahoe that i let my brother drive and he also has a 1983 Mercedes turbo diesel he just got put together from some upgrades so didn't bother me to wait a week for the starter to arrive because he would drive the Benz and I the Tahoe to work and school etc etc. well Friday my luck gets even better with the Mercedes torque converter going out and down to one vehicle now so I had no other choice but to give in and buy a starter from a dealer so I had it right then to change and be good to go. So call the nearest dealership which is an hour away and got one.

Well put it on and guess what the sound is still there so must not be the starter. So Im still pissed over this truck cause after so many little things adding up you just get tired of it. Made an appointment at my dealer Saturday and dropped the truck off.

When trying to explain the problem to the tech and how the noise was louder and lasted 30 mins on the drive there and how it goes away after you drive it a bit they begin to tell me about a recall to which reminded me about some other problems that needed fixed like the leaky antenna and rear axle seal leaking and all that.

So heres where they start making me mad:

1. they tell me they will not give me a loaner car or truck like they said I would anytime my truck comes in for service when I bought the truck.

2. They tell me the one new starter I bought they will not take back which brings up an old wound from when I ordered parts before for the Tahoe to which they said I could return but when I needed to return one because the parts guy said I needed it when I didn't because they "can't return parts that were ordered" but they don't keep those parts in stock. So makes me ask what parts will they take back since the starter was in stock when I bought it.

3. We think the problem may be the fly wheel coming apart which again they try to tell me won't be covered under warranty and Im like hell nah the truck ain't even two years old yet it will be! and of course when they go to get the truck the sound didn't pop up for them.

My truck has 53K miles on it and bought it new for the sole purpose of the warranty and the loaner vehicle when it is serviced but yet none of those am I benefiting from. They have yet to tell me what they think the problem is but won't hear from them until Monday.

This has me tired of GM's crap and makes me look at other vehicles. Not just because of this one instance but because of lack of quality and warranties that they promote but when something actually goes bad they want to always make you pay for it. I mean it would be different if I blew the rear end from burning my 35s everywhere I went.

I did look at a new Mercedes C300 which has a 6 year unlimited mileage bumper to bumper warranty that also gives you loaner vehicles. This particular dealer has 92 loaner cars available for whatever service.

So should I get the Mercedes with the unlimited mileage warranty or should I keep the truck in the hopes everything is covered and I don't have anymore of these type issues?

Would I miss driving a truck when going to a car?

I wish I could say it was just a bad dealer but this is dealer #3 and the first one ever gotten multiple chances even after when I first was buying my truck when asked to look at one the guy brought the keys to a work truck and says "this is the cheapest one on our lot its probably the only one you can afford."

So you are mad because you mis-diagnosed the truck yourself and now they won't take your part back (which is now used, bolted on and connected up) ? Also they won't give you a loaner car until they figure out whether your repair will or will not be covered under the powertrain warranty.

Whew gotta break that stuff up into paragraphs man. I'd contact GM first about it, however if I was you and had the money for a Merc, I'd probably just do that. I don't deal with troubled cars. My 15 WRX was the funnest coolest car I've ever had, but after so many issues at just 3k miles all stock, I got rid of her at a loss. I still want another but I don't deal with that mess.

That was a little hard to follow, but I think you should trade the starter in on a new Mercedes.

No those are just the little things that added to the whole mess. What I was trying to get across about parts is they say they take returns for either this or that and yet I've had parts under both circumstances and they still say no so really what part will they take back lol.

The whole truck being down this soon upsets me, I mean thats why we pay so much for these things, and no matter what the problem is they keep wanting me to pay for it when it should and is suppose to be covered.

Im sure others may think "Oh boo hoo no loaner car" but when I bought the truck I was told I got a loaner vehicle anytime the truck was at the dealer whether for oil change, recalls, or vehicle service. It's not like my dealer is in town or right down the street. It's 60 miles away, one way. So in this instance where they kept the vehicle over the weekend and I got one vehicle to share between my brother and me for real bothers me. I raise my brothers since my mother passed away two years ago. I work two jobs and go to school, my brother works and goes to school and my youngest brother is in ball so he has to be taken places for that and one vehicle can't meet all these needs especially when I was under the impression I would have a loaner vehicle no matter the instance.

Im just worried that's what my truck is turning into. When I first got my truck when everyone was having their problems and wanting buy backs my truck was perfect. Its only been since fall that all the issues everyone else has had before that Im just now getting. One time the whole HVAC went out on my like the digital gauges and all that while driving and had to pull over and turn the truck off and back on to get stuff to work. It sucks too because I know I don't have bumper to bumper coverage anymore because hell I pay for my truck I am going to drive it lol the only thing great about the Merc is its loaded and all and will only cost me $40 more a month to get. Just wondering how bad I will miss a truck. I put all my time and money in the truck because I planned on keeping it but unlimited mileage bumper to bumper warranty makes me think I may not.

I think you know your own answer... But if not get what makes you happy. All mechanical items will eventually have issues.

I had a car I bought for 500 dollars when I was 20 and besides oil changes and tires she gave me 130000 miles of life... I hated that car even though it was dependable.

Took a perfectly good single paragraph and broke it into 13 sections....and ruined all the comments. :sigh:

I dunno Since its outta the bumper to bumper I'm not sure I'd expect a free loaner....

I'm not sure why you think GM (or any manufacturer) will cover something when it is out of warranty? I assume you had a 3 year 36k bumper to bumper and the 5 year 100k power train and if you read the warranty it clearly states what is covered and what isn't. I haven't owned or looked at a Mercedez but I assume they would say the same thing about the warranty. Do they have unlimited warranties?

I also will say that 50k+ miles isn't "this soon" and you had the option to buy an extended warranty especially if you were going to put 50k in 1-2 years. My gmc dealer doesnt' even give me a car off their lot when I have recall work. I had to deal with enterprise and was pretty pissed about it. I am still in the 3 year 36 and a 55k denali.

The dealer has a program for free loaners and do you have it in writing?

It sounds like you'd like a more trouble free car owning experience. Also unless you need a truck for hauling/towing then its up to your generic habits on if you'll miss it. You can see if any dealers around you will do a extended test drive as I've heard people can take the car home for a day and bring it back the next day to see how they like it. In the end we can't tell you if you'll miss driving a truck.

I understand some things aren't covered but when when they try to tell me a fly wheel separating and coming apart isn't part of a powertrain warranty it bothers me. It's like having a warranty but it not cover anything. I don't trust warranties that aren't from the manufacturer. And yes they do have unlimited mileage warranties but not unlimited year. Got all the paperwork and everything $0 deductible too for the up to 6 years you can get it.

Im sure part of this situation and frustration is coming from my previous nissan ownership where in 11 years of ownership I only had to do oil changes, tires, timing belt, and a valve cover gasket and it had 175k on it. Also some things get to people more so then others and it not bother them. I bought this vehicle expecting nothing major to go wrong until around 100k. I mean this isn't a little matter. When I played the video to one of the service techs his eyes got big and said "I don't know whats wrong but thats something major" which doesn't leave me with peace of mind.

    • It is possible to add your own 12v outlet to your truck.  Check out this video:   I verified via GM Upfitters that pin 31 is the same on the 1500 trucks.  The wire is GM part number 84779405.   You can get the GM 12v outlet from Amazon  https://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Accessory-Receptacle-25774623-13549530/dp/B0F1H9YRGF EWAY 12 Volt Power Adapter for GM   https://www.amazon.com/EWAY-Chevrolet-Silverado-Cigarette-Ignition/dp/B0915RRW6Q/ref=sr_1_1?   I just haven't figured out a good place to put the 12v outlet in my truck.   Some people are getting USB-C to 12V adapters  https://www.amazon.com/WYMECT-Cigarette-Lighter-Socket-Adapter/dp/B0F87WNQKB/ref=sr_1_1_sspa? Not sure if they provide the correct amperage that a device like a tire inflator would need.
    • Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.
    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
