OldBlue61 Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 Well, the Silverado is headed to the local Ziebart location to get rust-proofed later today. 24 hours, and I'll pick it up Friday afternoon. I've seen too many 10-12 year old trucks (of all makes) with rust holes all over them that I want to make sure I do everything I can to make mine last. I'm already a freak about keeping my cars clean no matter the weather (and we do get some sh!tty weather in Northern Ohio), so this will be a little peace of mind, if nothing else.
Silverado Steve Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 It's one of those damned if you do and damned if you don't. Hopefully they prep the surfaces right. There are plenty of examples of those who got aftermarket rustproofing only to have the coating flake off the wax coating, or rust to happen. My dealer refused to do any rustproffing applications and there aren't many vendors who do rustproofing around here. Keep in mind an aftermarket rust application will void your GM corrosion warranty. As long as they prep right and you go back annually to have it resprayed you should be good. Good luck.

And you're right - damned if you do and damned if you don't. I've always had good luck w/ Ziebart in the past, and the wax coating on the frame is one of the issues that I plan address with them when I drop the truck off because they told me they do rustproof the frame as well as the body. Roll the dice and hope it works better than the factory stuff. I have no problem voiding the factory corrosion warranty, as I feel it's nothing more than lip service anyhow. Taking it back once a year at $60 a pop is cheap insurance in my mind. We will see.
JerryCanada Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 Haven't done mine yet but will be done before winter comes. Here trucks barely makes it to 10 years old without needing rust repairs to pass yearly inspections. I purchased a 2003 sierra 1500 not long ago that was rust proofed once in 2005 from the documentation I have and no touch ups/repairs seems to have been done anywhere on the truck. After this long the coating is flaking off but will get this one done too before winter.
99silveradoz71 Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 I tossed around the idea of going with them this time, but opted to stick with Fluid Film as I've done on my 08, the wife's Kia, and mom's Buick.
OldBlue61 Posted June 2, 2016 Author Posted June 2, 2016 I guess it all comes down to personal preference or experience. Whether it's FF, Ziebart, or some other way, I believe you gotta do something to make them last longer. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk
Silverado Steve Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 Did FF take the wax coating off your frame? I tossed around the idea of going with them this time, but opted to stick with Fluid Film as I've done on my 08, the wife's Kia, and mom's Buick.
cbrsilv15 Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 Where are you at in OH? I have had mine oil sprayed every year. This truck will get sprayed too before winter. I always wondered about getting it undercoated. We def need some pics!!
oneandzero Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 I'm curious what the undercoating folks think of this wax crap and what they say is compatible with it. I normally don't keep a vehicle long enough to worry about it but the way this truck is rusting underneath already, it may be dust in a couple years if I don't undercoat it.
15silver Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 Personally I'd stay away from the wax based coatings and use an oil-like product , eg Crown or Rustcheck It gets into the cracks and penetrates/displaces water. I had VWs warranty, and an aftermarket Zeibart coating. The seams under the door rusted twice in 3 years. First time the dealer touched it up as a goodwill gesture. Second time neither covered it. - read your warranty. You'll see seams and spot welds are not covered. Not covered from outside in. So if a panel rusts from the inside out, no where near a seam or spot weld, you are covered. Thats never going to happen. A product like Crown or Rustcheck - if applied properly - will get into the seams. Leading edge of hood, cab corners, tailgate, and box above rear wheels. Won't dry out and trap moisture like Zeibart. Last car I used a product, I had used Crown 4 times over it's 10 year life. Had to trace a wire in the trunk. Pulled out the trunk liner and everything was well coated with the product. Bit of a messy job tracing the wire, but was pleased to see the panel was so well protected. Just my experience
SkiDooNick700 Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 I had mine Ziebarted.... we'll see what happens. Its been almost 1 year. So far so good, no issues with flaking or anything. I tried FF prior to ziebart on a small area of the frame. It softened my coating and I could actually just wipe it right off to bare metal. Thats when I said hell, I'll give Ziebart a shot...

I live in the historical area of Elyria, just north east of the square. Just my experience Years ago, I used to use the UK-made Waxoil on my British cars - that stuff worked great at keeping them as rust free as possible. British cars and rust go hand in hand, if you didn't do SOMETHING to them they would return to the Earth as you watched! Unfortunately there's no Crown in the States, and Ziebart was the closest, and with my previous experience with them, I felt comfortable going to them again. Like I said, you roll the dice and take your chances. Nothing is perfect, and unless you live in the desert or the SW United States, you gotta do something to make them last. We will see how well the Ziebart holds up.
ewbldavis Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 I'm in Canton area - considering having local shop that does undercoating and sprays stuff inside the doors. I figure for $400, it has to help some.
99silveradoz71 Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 I tried to keep the Fluid Film off the wax coating on the frame and mainly hit everything else with it. They do sell the wax coating in a can if you wanted to get that and touch up any areas down the line.
OldBlue61 Posted June 4, 2016 Author Posted June 4, 2016 Well, they did a heck of a job - the couple of small rusty areas on the frame were cleaned, sprayed with some kind of acidic sealer, and then the entire undercarriage was sprayed, including inside the frame and cross members (and tubes). Nice heavy coat. Up inside the bed, inside the cavities of the cab and doors, and the tailgate. Now we'll see how well it holds up. The shop did leave a copy of their "confidential" work sheet for 2014-16 Silverados in the truck when they were done. I scanned it and attached it, in case anyone is curious.
