A good color-matched tailgate fetches what, $500 on FleaBay? That's a quick and untraceable source of income for the criminal.

The person looking to buy a stolen tailgate on e-bay needs one because his/hers was stolen. With careful shopping, one could buy their own tailgate back!

That's interesting. I always just run the straps over the edge of the tailgate and hook them to the safety chain loops on the hitch.

I'm assuming that 3/4" plywood would be strong enough to handle the stress. but was also considering using a 2x10

Run a single strap...

Run it over the top of the sheeting (to the center of the tailgate), then loop it back under the sheeting to the opposite tiedown...it holds in and down at the same time with a single strap. The strap will look like a vee, with one half of the vee on the top of the sheeting, and the other half of the vee under the sheeting.

The strap then never touches the outside of the truck, preventing scratches and the way it ties it in, it's pinched against the front of the bed, and held down by the strap...I have hauled bed fulls of sheeting in this manor, never lost a single sheet.

I also removed the air deflectors from in front of the rear tires and made these filler pieces. 7E2E3CAF-A241-4298-94C4-85C1DB70AD3E_zps0EFE0B3C-5DA4-41D9-8887-5CB85A4E9F08_zps

I like that alot.. what did you use for the filler?

the single strap is good for plywood, but it would likely ruin the edge of drywall.

We usually just put a a piece of 2x4 or plywood at the edge to distribute the pressure evenly across the edge and prevent cracking. But you're right the strap would dig in.

There's many ways to transport sheet goods, I just thought this one was cool and I enjoy wood-working.

I just saw the wood schematic, that's pretty cool.

Nah, hauled a lot of drywall like that too, it's so heavy you don't need to kill it when tensioning the strap.

Thanks. No write-up or drawings. I started with a cardboard pattern first to get all of the sizes and angles figured out.

wow, you put a lot of time and energy into that box! it looks very nice. but I know with my 2 kids I couldn't get that much time alone in the garage right now. haha

I would just buy one of the underseat storage boxes from either Husky or Du-Ha.

I'll probly buy the Husky one once my kids are out of car seats, but for the time being, I can't flip my back seats up because the child seats are in the way!
