Speed Limiter Delete

One of the things that has perplexed me a bit about GM over the years is their desire to put 99 mph top speeds on their trucks and large SUV's.

My question is, the 6.2 liter V8 with the 8 speed auto apparently has the ability to top out at it's 99 mph limiter by the end of the 1/4 mile.

So there is potential of it going 100+ in a 1/4 mile if it wasn't limited.

Is there a way to defeat the speed limiter without a tune?

I'd love to see what this truck will do at the drag strip "stock" without it being limited to 99 mph.

Plus I'd love for it to have a 110-112 mph top speed just in case I need find myself up along side a competitor, as every one of the competitor trucks are limited to 107+ mph.

If you were looking for something to go fast in, why'd you buy a truck?

Not the point of the question I asked. Thanks

They are big heavy dangerous machines and they are not design for top speed. That being said I am with you on that topic. I would love to go faster than 100, but I fully understand and won't argue with the limiter.

Common knowledge that higher speeds can cause catastrophic drive shaft failure. Just look at dyno pulls for GM trucks. If you want to go faster, you need a tune.

My cousin claims his is limited to 115, he has a 5.3. In a quarter mile ON A TRACK sure I'd push it above 100 but, I've been told that sometimes they limit speed due to driveshaft balance. I had my sierra up to about 90, it had hwy tires, my 16 silverado has AT tires and I have no desire to run it that fast....

Just buy a simple hand help programmer. I have the Diablo Trinity and love it. I took of the speed limiter and modified several more parameters.

I have the 5.3 and it goes over 100. It was at least 105. I don't know what it's limited at though. I'm 100% stock. Idk why some are limited lower than others, unless it's due to tire ratings.

If it helps, my truck is a 16 5.3/3.42 4x4 cc. Lt z71. Nothing special, it would seem. Came with the 18s.

The software is what limits the speed so obviously you need a tune. Either handheld or custom tune. I turned my speed limiter off. I have no intention in going over it anyway but I don't feel I need to be limited like a child either

Thanks for the responses.

As I figured it would need a software flash, but I've never owned a GM truck before this, so I'm not in the know about all GM's standards, practices, or if their are other tricks that you can do without a flash. I'm also unaware of all their reasons (like some stated about the driveshaft).

However I did read an article that listed another (older model) GM truck with a top speed of 107. Maybe that was an anomaly like others have posted where their trucks actually do go above 99 mph. But I do know that many (or most) of GM's trucks/Tahoes/Yukons/Suburbans are limited to 99 mph for many years.

Motor Trend, or maybe it was C&D tested a new 6.2 with 8 speed auto and listed the 1/4 mile trap speed at 99 mph.

That's what prompted the question. Figured they might of hit the speed limiter sometime before the end part of the 1/4 mile, making me wonder if the truck would of hit 100+ had it not been limited.

Thanks again all.

I live in Texas and have travel north and west on roads with higher speed limits. Every truck I've owed with a limiter I've removed it with a hand held tuner. More than a few times being able to go faster has been a life saver. Two lane roads out west have high speed limits and passing would require a little more than 99 MPH. I think more than a few people would spend a few dollars more for tires that handle 120mph if that's what it takes. I can't imagine the drive shafts a problem. You could get all technical about gear ratios and driveshaft speed and despute that.
