Speed Limiter Delete

Lol everyone telling you that you can't take your truck to a 1/4 mile track and race it legally. It's your truck. Enjoy the track if you want. I've seen plenty of trucks at the track.

My Blackbear tune has my limiter set to 130. I don't race, but to answer your question, that's how it can be done.

My hd driveshaft cost $600 with the trans yoke.

Plus $50 for shipping but that may be different depending where you live. The shop I got mine from is in San Antonio and I live a couple hours west of there.

I live in Texas where many police vehicles, sheriff, and state police use trucks. So exceeding 99 mph has to be possible.

Its not uncommon to be doing 80mph on I10 in Houston and being passed.

It's not uncommon to be in a 75mph zone on back roads that are only 2 lanes and this is where the speed limiter I have and issue with. Read below.

I purchased my 2015 Gmc 1500 Denali when it was new, changed the tires to be rated for 120+ Mph. My truck was limited to 115 mph and would get to the limiter very quickly when needed to pass and 18 wheeler and a car on a 2 lane road.

I have only 18k miles and its 2018.

The other day I'm driving down the same road and tried to pass the same amount of vehicles and my truck limiter had been changed to 99mph without my knowledge or consent. Had it not been for me running into a ditch it would have been a head on collision where I and many other would be dead.

If you all believe the speed max should be 99 I'm all for it, but also change the speedometer, make sure the driver knows that's the top speed. A warning or something!  Because if I'm expecting my vehicle to go 115 and its goes 99 then my life and anyone else's is in trouble when I try to pass anyone when the speed limit is 75 and most people drive 80. That is not enough room on speed to pass anyone.

Why have a speedometer that reads 170 when the max your vehicle can go is 99? That gives the driver a false hope if he needs to pass anyone and the engine cuts out 1/2 thru passing anyone and traffic is headed his way.

To me this should be a lawsuit against the vehicle builders especially when they change something without your knowledge. It should be the same vehicle and have the same capability as it was when you drove it off the lot !

Apparently you dont live in Texas or driven in Houston. So you have no idea. But thanks for your rude comment it helps a lot.

Speed limiters have been around for over 20 yrs. It's not just trucks that have them. It should be expected. If you want it removed, get a tuner and turn it off. Check out the tires on the police vehicles you mentioned. I think you'll find they are rated for higher speeds and the ones on your truck aren't.

Some MFG want to void your warranty if you use a turner.

Yup that's why I changed my tires right after I purchased my new truck. But I didnt install tires like police do because I wasnt looking to go over the 115 mph .

The strongest point I'm trying to make is the speed whatever they decide on should be standard and set before a purchase and not 2 or 3 years later when the driver already knows what the top speed is. I'm sure their have been head on collision because the top speed was changed without the drivers knowledge or consent. The diver owns the vehicle after purchase and nothing should be changed without that person knowing.

2nd.

Speedometers max speed need to change accordingly to top limiter speed and not 170mph anyway.

Thanks for your input.

Get ready, I tried a few times to explain to the people who live in the north where speed max is 65 that there are places that far exceed that speed. They start crying your going to kill someone. They can’t imagine that is possible to need to pass 100mph to safety pass. It’s normal to cruise all day at 85 and it’s legal. The roads are smooth and not full of potholes and 85 feels like 65. And some places it doesn’t even snow, imagine that. Or prior to the mid 70s no speed limits in lots of places, and no speed ratings on tires. How did we survive?

That's so true. Last time it snowed here was Christmas of 2004. Texas roads are quite long. Going 30 miles to go to a store can be common unless in Houston where the drive like the Indianapolis 500. 85 and 90 mph can be going with the flow of traffic. Actually my wife gets mad at me for driving slow.

But when you have a dr appointment 180 miles away and a long line of traffic because and 18 wheeler thinks it's time to take a Sunday drive it can put your hours behind because of the long drive down a long road with no other path to take. I drive the speed limit or below 95% of the time unless I need to pass someone, and that's the only time that I get close 99 or try to go over that.

When I drove in New York it wasnt like Houston and not like the back long 2 lane roads in Texas. But Arizona some places have no speed limit and you talk about going over 100mph for hours.

How did your speed limiter get changed?  Somebody had to do it, it doesn't just happen by itself.

The only place it has every been told me they didnt change it. But they did tell me they installed an update from GM. Or it was dont thru the On Star device. Either way it was GM who changed it.

99 is fast enough for me faster seems like fun then a deer jumps out and ruins your whole day

Yes, this is an old post, but couldn't resist. A doe jumped out in front of me on Rt 70 in Ohio, doing about 65 mph. Here is what she did....

Great post.

This the the main reason I purchased a truck. Had you been in a car you might not have lived.

Trucks are safer than cars unless driving to fast around corners.

If you need to go 115mph to "pass a bunch of vehicles safely" on two-way traffic roads and hit ditches to avoid killing someone, you need to hand in your driver's license before you kill someone. I have a 6.2L and live on the two-way Trans-Canada highway and I can pass everyone I need too without exceeding 140kph (87mph), exceeding this speed earns us a street racing charge, a 7 day impound, loss of license for 1 year, a criminal record for life and a $10,000 lawyer bill to get off the charges. I have got this charge, it is not a good time.

You must not be a day older than 20 years old. I did a lot of stupid, stupid things at that age and still do, but your comments are on a whole 'nother level of dumb. Aside from tires you are exceeding the critical speed of the driveshaft, it WILL break, just a matter of when and who you will crash into when it does.

You want to drive fast, go to a track, you have hundreds in America, you have no excuse. I travel 9 hours to my closest 1/4m and autocross park in Canada, what is your excuse?

Nothing against fast trucks, but when you are too cheap to re-engineer it to travel at your desires speeds then don't do it. You need bigger brakes, lower centre of gravity, driveline upgrades etc. There is more to it than just removing the speed limiter and sending it past a bunch of commuters. Build a fast truck, drive it fast on a licensed track please. Kthxbye.
