Speed Limiter Delete

Who doesn't break the speed limits every day when they drive? We aren't talking about triple digit speeds on a daily basis or whatever.

The post was began as bboyce stated, with my curiosity about being able to go above 99 mph at a drag strip and what the truck would do without the stock limiter.

But clearly people speed on public roads, nobody here condons that, but it's like rolling through a stop sign.....everybody does it from time to time even though it's breaking the law. Tuning cars for public road use too is also against the law, it's not condoned by many but no reason to close a discussion about it.

Bottom line however, if you want to go above 99 mph at a drag strip or wherever, you need to get a tuner.

Thanks all.

I'm suprised nobody said what I'm going to say. It is a stupid question.

Is the OP or others who agree with this 18 or 19 years old? I'm going to say they are 43 or 44 years old. When does a grown man want to race the competition" to see how they fare? I just think that is silly as you put other responsible peoples lives in jeopardy. Here in Ontario the police will impound your vehicle and you can face a $10000 additional fine for driving 50 kph over the posted speed limit. Even on the major highways that still translates to less than the limiter value. This was put in place because kids were racing and causing deaths of innocent people including truck drivers that were cut off by these morons. There was one instance where a truck driver was cut off by guys racing and instead of his truck piling into other cars they left the road to save lives - the guy died and sacrificed his life for others for no reason. It is called stunt driving and perhaps this should be put in place elsewhere.

The entire discussion about having to go over 99 is also a joke. As if anyone has to go 29+ mph faster than a posted speed limit because they feel their life is in danger.

These trucks are not built for racing the last time I checked - maybe GM should change their commercials to propose that and see how many new potential buyers line up. Lots of 1/4 mile shots of the truck finishing ahead of the "completion" will increase sales for sure.

GM knew exactly what they were doing but go ahead and do it and test that wannabee Internet engineering expertise.

LOL

Says the guy who reads Car and Driver, MotorTrend, and all the car magazines that also test acceleration on trucks.

Who probably has watched not only dedicated race videos and clearly doesn't realize their are Competition Truck series in racing too.

And who also clearly doesn't know the age of John Force and others who still race well into their 60's or more.

And I'll bet this bumcrack guy has also texted while driving too, and talked on the phone while driving and maybe even had a beer or two and then drove among many many other dangerous things on the road, but criticizes others for going fast for a few seconds when nobody else is around. He also clearly doesn't know that most deadly accidents happen at intersections from running lights or stop signs, of which he's probably done on several occasions himself.

So unless you are a saint, or Jesus himself, best not to judge, you look hypocritical and foolish when you haven't gotten the board out of your own eye before trying to get the sliver out of someone else's.

As has been forum and general discussion etiquette for a long time....if you don't agree with the conversation or what's being said in the conversation, best to stay out of it. Advice well heeded.

Got my answer to my question already guys. Moving on.

Cheers to those who responded to the question and stayed on point. Thanks

As you have made some assumptions about me, I thought I'd respond to them.

You are correct that I have texted and used the phone while driving. Bluetooth looks after all that for me. Before it became law, absolutely because there was no written rules forbidding it but rarely as I could always wait to text since I focus on driving, not being distracted. Seen too many idiots out there swerving all over the place while on their phones.

Speeding - sure do but within reason. Like 5mph over the posted limit in the US and 15 kph here in Canada on the highways. That is a far cry from worrying about a top speed limit.

Drinking - no. I have a family and have outgrown that kind of stuff some 20 years ago. I drink 4 beers a year so I doubt that would put me in any concern. Even when I go out with buddies for golf, baseball, or general get togethers, I don't drink booze.

Your points about the magazines and reports for vehicles are useless as most people who buy a truck base this on four things;

1) Loyalty to a brand

2) Actual use of a truck

3) Looks

4) Reliability

I never bought my 2014 because of speed. I bought it because of GM pricing, 0% financing, warranty, and looks. The Dodge 3500 Cummins before that was purchased strictly for hauling. My Nissan Frontier before that was purchased for gas mileage, looks, and power for a V6 for towing a 19' fishing boat. No loyalties or focus on what top speed they cut out at. I don't read those magazines as they are spin doctors. I go to boards to review real feedback from owners and the problems they experience with vehicles. Boards like this one.

Any other questions you would like to know? Thank you for your assumptions. My response was based on your comments which I did not have to assume anything.

In my opinion, this type of response spoils a good discussion. I personally have strong opinions about excessive speeds and could give a few first hand accounts of being first on the scene of speed related horrific accidents. In spite of my opinions, I respected the response from the person who gave first-hand accounts of how speeding saved lives. To refer to a person as "this bumcrack guy" and other derogatory comments is totally disrespectful to someone voicing their opinion on this forum.

GM trucks have stopped at 98 since at least '96 or so. That was what my friends stopped at in high school.

Speed limiters started in 1993 on gm trucks. Friend of mine had a 92 & no limiter. I had a 93 & it did. I also had a 94,96 & 98 all were limited.

You will be assimilated. Every time you drive over the speed limit the ONSTAR system is recording the event. When you decide to run for President the opposing party will buy this information and your political career will be in shambles.......

That's his screen name, it wasn't a derogatory comment. Regardless, I blocked him since he decided to ruin this thread with his holier than thou Jesus complex while completely and falsely assuming stuff about me as the OP....as well as contributing absolutely zero to the answer of the original question and topic. He's therefore no use or interest to me in future discussions.

/over and out on this one.

According to my service foreman, GM used to limit them at 88mph due to the driveshafts. He said they increased it because people were complaining, but yes it's because the driveshafts, particularly the one piece aluminum. I guess they get too much flex in the and can explode or something. I had my 02 up to 125 one time and I definitely wouldn't wanna do it again that's for sure

And tire ratings

My feelings are so hurt.

And I wasn't confusing this guy with the OP as I clearly stated "Is the OP or others who agree with this.....". I just responded to his points. Not sure where he gets a "holier than thou" thought since I spoke specifically about the law and what it has stopped in Canada.

I'm mature enough to deal with this so it doesn't bother me and I expressed my views on this thread given the responses noted here. There are two sides to everything in life and if people cannot handle to discuss this in a grown up fashion, that is not my problem.

I do apologize if I derailed this topic.

Our local speed limits reach 120 kmh (75 mph) which I thought was pretty fast! What are the limits in Texas where speeds of over 99 mph are needed for safety reasons?

We do quite a fair amount of travelling in the western US and Canada. There are lots of interstate locations all over the US west that have 80 mph speed limits.

(not sure that means more than 99 is necessary -- I''ll leave that for everyone to discuss)

For other Ontario residents: the thing that amuses me the most in the 80 mph zones is when a construction zone reduces the speed to a mere 65 mph -- still faster than the 100 km/hr (62 mph) Ontario 400 series speed limit.

It was put in place as a LIBERAL tax grab

So question. How much would a good aftermarket drive shaft cost? Also what other added benefits would you achieve on a truck? Weight reduction helps reduce the loss of power but it's a truck after all 5.5k lbs is a lot to get going.
