My truck tops out at 110. Really doubt I'll ever go that fast ever again.

According to my service foreman, GM used to limit them at 88mph due to the driveshafts. He said they increased it because people were complaining, but yes it's because the driveshafts, particularly the one piece aluminum. I guess they get too much flex in the and can explode or something. I had my 02 up to 125 one time and I definitely wouldn't wanna do it again that's for sure

The concept of a limiter is disturbing, but so is the thought of the built in cost of a 5 yr/100K mile warranty coverage being passed on to purchasers of vehicles not used for high speed racing.

So, I'm all for the dealer's disabling the limiter in exchange for discontinuing all warranty coverage on all moving parts, electronics, and tires.

GM trucks have stopped at 98 since at least '96 or so. That was what my friends stopped at in high school.

If you want your truck you go faster.. you got to spend money. But make sure that drive line is the first $ you spend it on

I live in Texas and have travel north and west on roads with higher speed limits. Every truck I've owed with a limiter I've removed it with a hand held tuner. More than a few times being able to go faster has been a life saver. Two lane roads out west have high speed limits and passing would require a little more than 99 MPH. I think more than a few people would spend a few dollars more for tires that handle 120mph if that's what it takes. I can't imagine the drive shafts a problem. You could get all technical about gear ratios and driveshaft speed and despute that.

Our local speed limits reach 120 kmh (75 mph) which I thought was pretty fast! What are the limits in Texas where speeds of over 99 mph are needed for safety reasons?

I would recommend a hand held tuner so you can change the setting anytime you like. I use a Hypertech because it gives the option to set the AFM to only operate above a set mph and a lot of other options like resetting the speed limiter. With most hand held tuners you can set the speed limiter to whatever you want. The first time that I tried the tune with the Hypertech I made a mistake and set the speed limiter to 25 mph. I thought that the 25 setting was for what would be added to the stock setting of 98mph. Nope, truck would not go over 25 mph LMFAO

On the 6.2 8spd 1/4 mile speed the truck tops out at 98 mph WELL before the 1/4 mile marker so yes they are much faster than reported in the tests. Now to be clear and as stated by concerned citizens these are utility vehicles "trucks" so should not ever be driven over the posted speed limit. 5 to 10 below would be great so we know that you are safe man (tongue in cheek)

Passing performance, if your passing a tractor trailer who's going 68 mph in a 75mph two lane road you want the option to go faster than 99 mph. Some road I've traveled have 85 Mph speeds and very few cars on it. And most of all I'm getting pretty tired of other people (government) telling me what I can do. Give them an inch they take a mile. I remember before the double nickel days cruising out west in my fathers Electra 225 at 120 hour after hour on I 10 west toward California, the speed limit was 00.

Interesting. From your posts, it sounds like you and I travel many of the same roads. I've been stuck behind said tractor-trailers, and I've never been in a position where I felt I needed to pass them at 100mph+. Let alone felt like it was safe to do at that speed given all the disturbed air coming off an object that big. Even west of Austin where most of those roads to my ranch are hilly two lane roads. I'd rather stay behind him and let him clear through the deer or turkeys or pigs that decide to cross at that time.

I do agree with you to some extent about government involvement, but hey, that dislike of the government is a true Texan trait. :)

A tuner, but upgrade your driveshaft like others have said.

Mine is still limited but I do wish it would go faster if I needed/ wanted it to.

Sometimes speed is your friend....ie. if your already cruising on the 75mph hwy ( and your probably doing 80 with the flow of traffic. (Unless your in Atlanta then your doing 90 or getting run over lol.)

Any how back to the story passing the semi coming around the curve going uphill on the interstate and we both see another semi stopped in front of us cause he missed his gears.... Guess what if I would have braked there would have been a huge wreck. Instead I floored it in my g8 gt and went from 80-120 (it's limited at 140)

The other semi served to my Lane and missed the stopped semi in a blind curve.... No body wrecked.... Heart racing yes, but no one wrecked!

Semi pulled up beside me in a couple miles at truck stop and said thanks! I'm glad your car was fast. And that I was an even faster in my reactions / decision making skills, because he knew he couldn't come over to my Lane with out killing me and my family, and that all 3 vehicles would be severely wrecked, not to mention the vehicles behind us a short ways might manager to hit us too.

So do I like to drive over a hundred, nope.

But i want it if I feel I need it.

I also rushed my daughter to the hospital years ago in the same car at 100+ (at 3:00 in the morning) the surgeon told my wife (she's an RN) and was keeping pressure on so my daughter would keep from bleeding out.

That my daughter would have died waiting for the volunteer fire/ambulance to get to our home and back to the hospital.

Yep, mine is 110 also. That's plenty fast I think.

Guys just to be clear, I don't feel I need the truck to go 110 mph on a regular basis. I have a Hellcat for that.

But, in the event you want to take it to the drag strip just for the fun of it and see what you can do, it's a bit pointless if the speed limiter hits BEFORE you get past the 1/4 mile marker.

I'd love to see what it will really do without the speed limiter at the drag strip.

Sure this is NOT a drag vehicle, but I've owned dozens and dozens of cars and it's a bit fun to take each to the strip just to let them loose a couple times to see what they'll really do.

Also, there have been a few times where on an open stretch of freeway with no businesses, no other cars, and no side streets that you come across a competitor where and impromptu little run is fun. But if you are already traveling 60 mph, that little run will last 6-7 seconds.

And I think an Ecoboost F-150 is limited to 107 or something. So it would be fun to be able to at least run with or ahead of it for a few seconds before shutting it down.

As for the driveshaft. I'd find it extremely hard to believe that GM would put such weak driveshafts in these trucks (especially a 4x4 fitted with the off road package (Z71) like mine that is so fragile that the difference between 99 mph and 110 mph can cause it to break, but it's strong enough to take off roading and going over rocks, and through mud, etc. or be strong enough to support what many do like 6" lifts and 35+ inch tires all the while pulling 7000 lbs trailers.

And if you are ever in the unfortunate position of needing to outrun some whack job on the freeway, with a 99 mph top speed, if they were on a 500-600 cc SCOOTER you wouldn't be able to outrun them. 110 mph top speed isn't much better, but at least it's enough to outrun a scooter and nearly any other stock full size truck on the road. Yes I do have a CC permit and keep my piece on me, but I'd rather outrun them first than need to resort to using it.

Anyway, even though I've tune many many of my cars in the past, I wasn't planning on this truck, so I was hoping maybe there was a fuse or some trick that people had found that allowed the truck to go over 99 for a couple drag strip runs, and if ever in the positions I mentioned above.

Thanks again

Not sure what the fuss is about. Seems he is talking about 1/4 mile runs at a strip. Some trucks were limited at 112, if you need a few extra mph cause you wanna run it down a strip, any handheld can do this. I see no problem hitting 100+ quickly then backing down.
