Yes we know (we should) that the manual calls for 0W-20 for the 5.3 engine.

Can't remember the 6.2 oil spec off the top of my head, but oh well.

 

I'm curious what you 5.3 guys are running. Or plan to.

If you did steer of the recommended path, any issues?

GM recommends 0-W20. but eversince I got my truck I was having lifter noise and well it had a new oil change when I got it and endure this click-click for 3000 miles, then when it came time to change

Dealership will use synthetic blend mine used Quaker State........overfilled it by 3/4 quart and said, "I don't think it really matters if it's 8.00 or 8.75? So yeah, avoid the free oil change somehow

Quaker State UD Full Synthetic 0W20 or 5W20 in every car on the lot. Will also use Mobil 1 5W20 and Redline 5W30. All of these oils changed between 5 and 7 K have provided 200K plus trouble free miles

I went to autozone, or advanced auto to buy oil...... this 0w-20 was like 36 bucks for a 5 quart jug... Of course the v8 needs 8 quarts...

The bill with filter came to like 96 bucks...

 

Here's my advice - go onto amazon and buy the Oil of choice you need.... I got 2 jugs of Valvoline Advanced Synthetic SAE 0W-20 Full Synthetic Motor Oil - 5 Quart

and the bill was $48.00

Mobil 1 0W/20 can be had at WalMart - or I always watch for the oil + filter specials at AutoZone - just picked up the same oil for the 2015 Subaru Outback yesterday. $33.99 for the 5qt jug and M1 filter............

 

Oil is oil............ But when it comes to these thin 0W/20 fuel saving oils........... Mobil 1 helps me sleep at night....... :driving:

Already asked the dealership if they use the "synthetic blend" or "full synthetic" Dexos1 and they said full synthetic.......... Because I have free oil changes for life on the Silverado 6.2L on order. But doubt I will want to have them do what I can do just as easy and not have it on the crowded lot and in the hands of others.......... We'll see...........

So because 1 person had a small issue at 1 dealer they all will? Not really a F-up just an oversight, but hey I guess preach it to everyone...

So you are or aren't going to use the free oil changes?

 

Not sure why anyone would not, chances are they know more and are better at it than anyone here and if something does happen, it is documented and will get fixed (which is few and far between). On top of that it is free, money you don't have to spend! If people are overbearing just check the oil level when done, spot check the filter and plug and verify what oil they used. Not that difficult and you stay clean.

 

I have my last free oil change coming up. I am all for doing it myself (and I will) but i will miss not having to spend $50 each time and the time saved.

 

In response to the OP, what ever the dealer uses. When i do it myself I will use the cheapest big name oil in the correct weight and most likely synthetic blend unless it calls for full synthetic as I change my oil every 5k and am not worried about the extra longevity. Will do some more checking as that time nears.

First oil change at 1000 miles was done with the oil and filter I bought from the dealer the day I picked up the truck: AC Delco 0w-20 with filter.

 

The AC Delco is Synthetic BLEND, not FULL sythetic, which was fine for break-in anyway. At my next oil change, at 5k, I'll be switching to full sythetic, most likely. After that, I'll be sticking with a 5k mile OCI.

 

When I picked up the oil and filter from the dealer, the bill was $46 for 9 quarts and a filter. Yes 9, because apparently GM changed the oil capacity from 8.5 quarts to an even 8 recently and the guy who got the oil obviously wasn't aware.

0w-20 Mobil 1 full synthetic every 5000 miles in my truck and my wives 2016 Tahoe. Factory used in all corvettes for years now. 6.2 specs are the same as the 5.3 for viscosity.

      When I was there, most to all did not have an hour meter. They just did 5000 miles on regular vehicles and 3000 on police stuff. The modern oil change monitors should take into account engine hours, weather, etc. I don`t use the monitor on my stuff. I pull the stick, look at it, smell it, rub it between my fingers, etc. That`s my oci.   I have had many engines. Some bracket race. No problems doing things my way. I was in the mechanic business for 30 yrs or so. I still do things the old school way. Don`t care who laughs at me.   Understand, I was in the main shop. We didn`t do oil changes or tires. We had a service station for that. I don`t remember the hours they used for tractors, lawn mowers, etc. Something in my head says 250 hours.

      I don't know how far back vehicles had hour meters, be it driver accessible or diag accessible but was wondering if there was any rule of thumb your shop came up with in regards to an hour limit on engine oil regardless of the miles on the oil.    I know with construction or farm equipment its almost always based on engine hours for maintenance scheduling as no other metric really applies other than a seasonal time limit that one self imposes on items like engine oil.

      I'm not sure what to say on that mess but I will say that is an odd thing for that mechanic to speculate on as per assuming its been run out of oil a few times as the odds of that engine having instead piled up with a complete seizure would be very high if such events had actually taken place. However there is nothing saying that the oil has ever been changed although once again, what filter was on that engine as that would tell part of the story if its possible to figure out if its a factory installed filter or not. Too many items unknown and a lot of speculation, but regardless of that its one fubared mess that is mind boggling to see for a vehicle that new and its hard to imagine how it ever made it that far in life looking at the top of the engine.    His scanners, I've watched him before here and there and I'd have to say if I recall correctly that some of his scanning equipment is one or two steps up from a child's Exo Sketch 😋

      I agree. That`s a LOT of sludge for 12,000 miles. I tossed that out here since this is an OCI thread. There`s tons of people here that do not post.   I used to work on a city fleet. That includes police cars and fire trucks. Lesson is, not to only use the odo for oci. A police car has a ton of hours on the engine for the miles it shows. And, not just idling, directing traffic. They beat on these things.   Course, since it is a Kia, they were gonna use the "100,000 mile warranty" for their OCI.😉

      CLASS ACTION SUITS?  Does anyone know if there is already a class action suit for the paint - which was to have been fixed, changed in after the 2020 GM vehicles?  Does it look like this?    Just started 3 weeks ago - No help from GM as of yet - Dealer will not assist in speaking with GM on my behalf. Confirmed it is the paint they use along with the way the put it on that causes it to fail.  Clearly a Manufacturer's Defect.
