I have made it through all 23 pages. What a wealth of great information. I believe my question is answered, but want to make sure. Hopefully, you will indulge me.

My dealer found me a new 2017 Chevy Silverado 2500 LTZ, Z71. gas 6.0 with Midnight package (from previous posts, it seems Midnight may affect the answers). The only problem at this point is that it has the small mirrors.

The dealer understands that I need the tow mirrors. They have told me they can change the mirrors prior to delivery.

It seems like I only need to make sure they install the "DQS" tow mirrors, and that will allow me to retain all functions, including power fold. Is that correct?

Is it only necessary to change the mirrors, or will the harness need to be changed? If the harness has to be changed, is that something a dealer could do? Or would I need a custom harness such as the one discussed here?

My concern is that the salesperson (who seems very confused/unknowledgeable on the topic) has told me that any mirror replacement would lose the power fold feature. I am guessing this is because she only familiar with the "DPN" mirrors.

Just want to make sure I have all the right info before I push the issue. Crazy as it may sound, lack of fully functional tow mirrors is a deal breaker for me. I'm pretty handy but don't see myself removing the door panel to change a harness (at least not without ruining something on a brand new truck). I want the dealer to deliver this "ready to roll." Thanks in advance.

JoeM21,

Thank you for taking the time to go through it all. I appreciate those that make it through the 1st post in its entirety as it answers most everything about the upgrade.

I always welcome questions...

For anyone that has an LTZ/High Country, SLT/Denali with DL3 Mirrors, I ALWAYS suggest going with DQS Mirrors so that Power Fold and Mirror Memory is retained. If you go with DPN, you will lose these two features. I have observe most dealers suggest the DPN "Kit" as it comes with both mirrors in one package. The dealer will most likely suggest either:

DPN Kits - Non-Power Fold (these are Kits where both mirrors come in the package)

23372181 - Chrome

23372182 - Black

This is NOT what you want. You will want DQS. You have to get the mirrors individually.

DQS Power Fold - Chrome Towing Mirror

Part # 84041609 - Driver

Part # 84228892 - Passenger (Gas)

Part # 23351798 - Passenger (Diesel - K40)

For harnesses, you'll want:

Towing Mirror Upgrade - DL3/A45

Part # 23171564, which has been superseded By Part # 23342727 (Driver)

Part # 23171567, which has been superseded By Part # 23342716 (Passenger)

Remember that this IS a GM Supported Upgrade but have seen way too many times, members get steered in the wrong direction. There was another member here in the same situation and had DPN Mirrors installed. Same scenario, same trim and was told the same thing..."You'll lose power fold and other features". He went back and suggested my (suggested above) and was able to successfully get the dealer to install it.

I do provide the equivalent harnesses here and most folks will buy it from me to support me rather than the dealer, but completely understand if you go that route for them to deliver it all to you.

The upgrade and swapping of mirrors/harnesses is not hard but I can truly understand one not wanting to do this on their brand new truck. Trust me, I was REALLY hesitant to dive right in a few weeks of taking my truck home.

Let me know if you need any more information.

Good Luck!

Thanks so much for the detailed response. I am marking down the part numbers to communicate to the dealer and make sure they do the right thing.

In a perfect world, you would be closer to me, I would buy the harness from you and pay you to do the install. As I am negotiating for the dealer to do this pre-delivery, I don't see a 3rd party harness as an option.

I see the issue with Midnight and the DQS. Since they have a chrome finish, they don't "match" the midnight package. That doesn't bother me. It also seems like the chrome cover can be replaced with black if I can find the right parts.

With a harness change involved, I can see this being an interesting conversation with the dealer. :) Of course, that's based on my interactions with a very clueless salesperson who has poor communication skills. (Her lack of communication may kill this deal on a truck that could have been delivered earlier this week). For all I know, the parts/service department may say "no problem - we do that all the time."

Thanks again. I'm coming from the "other" brand and don't yet know all the ins/outs of Chevy truck options. Having this level of detail is immensely helpful.

Thank you pgamboa for your help with my mirror upgrade. Your harness was easy to install and all the info you provide was very useful. Shipping was extremely fast. I am very satisfied.

Thanks

Completely understand sir. I have helped a handful of local members and do so without any extra "fees" for the labor in doing it. I enjoy helping others whether you buy from me or not. Some dealers "get it" and have seen this go smoothly. But have seen more go in the wrong direction.

Keep us posted with your progress! Let me know if you need anything else. FYI - Based on my observations with aftermarket mirror companies, it seems that the mirrors caps are definitely replaceable. I just don't know if you can get your hands on black OEM caps to swap the chromes with. The shape/design of aftermarket caps look very similar (if not identical) to OEM mirrors.

Good Luck!

I can see how that would be a problem if I feel the need to go black. In my area of NY we have a number of large junkyards. I could probably get lucky at one of those.

But that's all a problem for another day. Right now, I just need the dealer to wake up and close this deal. They got the truck on their lot Monday. They finally sent me a photo today. I've been waiting almost two weeks for a copy of the sticker (not 100% sure what's in the truck) and something in writing to confirm the numbers we discussed. They have a small deposit based on a generic setup, but the details are pretty fluid. If they were on the ball, I would already be driving this truck. That's why I am trying to do some groundwork on the mirrors - to avoid wasting time while the dealer tries to figure things out. They were very pushy when I was there. Now, it's days before I get a phone call and emails/texts go unanswered.

They wait much longer and I might have to pull the plug... it's going to take some time for my guy to order and install a gooseneck hitch. I have some trailering needs in August and September. If I can't get a new truck setup by then, I won't be able to trade in my current rig until late October. Very frustrating at the moment.

Sorry for my tale of woe. Thanks again for the info - it may be the thing that saves this deal.

Phil is the man, a geniuse with wire harnesses. I installed the DIY kit to make my turn signals work and with his instructions it was a breeze. The hardest part was unwrapping the wires. Again Phil thank you, you are the man. Mike

For anyone that has purchased a harness set from me, don't forget to send me your stock harnesses for that core $40 refund. I won't be able to continue offering this service if the cores don't come back.

Thanks everyone!

I'll be putting mine in the mail tomorrow.

We all need to be sure to send the harnesses back. Even people who have had the dealers change them. You should have gotten the original harnesses back and it would do people in the future a good turn if you would send them to Phil. I'm sure he'd appreciate it.

Absolutely! I appreciate ya! Once cores stop coming in... one of two things will happen..

1. I have to increase prices if I need to start buying these at the GM Prices.

2. I pull the plug on this all together.

I don't want to have to do either. :)

Thanks David! And everyone else... send me your cores. [emoji51]

    • It wouldn’t have happened if the government hadn’t mandated outrageous fuel mileage standards. It does very little for the consumer. It adds cost. Back during Covid there was a chip shortage. They gave a rebate for your truck if it didn’t have the chip to turn on cylinder deactivation. It was 50$ because at best you may see 1/2 a mile increase per gallon. Splitting hairs each fuel mileage trick wasn’t mandated. The government doesn’t do the engineering work and say use this until it’s already in use and they like it. The fuel mileage was mandated. And those add ons the results. There’s a mandate and they are the results.
    • It was never mandated.  Ever.    Automakers were incentivized to install it by getting CAFE credits to help with their vehicle fleet fuel economy scores.  They were being handed money/CAFE credits to install it.  Which is NOT a mandate.       The current admin removed the incentives that were behind them installing it.
    • Are you playing Slide Down endlessly but your score is still low? Are you constantly crashing into obstacles as the game speed increases? Don't worry, this article will share 5 invaluable tips to help you master the race and impress your friends. Golden Rules 1. Look one step further. The mistake of 90% of new players is only staring at their character. The secret of experts is to look towards the top of the screen (where the slide is about to appear). This gives your brain an extra 0.5 - 1 second to process the situation and determine the direction of movement before the obstacle approaches. 2. Use gentle movements; don't swipe too hard. Slide Down is very sensitive. Moving your finger too forcefully or with excessive amplitude will cause your character to be thrown off course or crash into a wall. Practise moving your finger with small, decisive, and precise movements. 3. Don't be greedy for gold in dangerous locations. Gold coins are tempting for buying skins, but life is more important. If you see a gold coin right on the edge of a cliff or next to a spike trap, ignore it. Our goal is a High Score, and your score only increases if you survive. 4. Make the most of Power-ups. During the slide, you'll encounter items like Magnets (attract gold) or Shields (temporary invincibility). Never miss them! Especially the Shield, it's your "get out of jail free card" to help you get through those deadly fast sections. 5. Stay calm when speed peaks. When your score exceeds 500 or 1000, the game speed will be very fast. At this point, don't try to think logically; let your natural reflexes work. Take deep breaths and don't panic. Apply these 5 tips to your next game, and your leaderboard will surely improve dramatically. Good luck climbing the Slide Down leaderboard!
