Oil Change Cost

Dealership charges me roughly $65 out the door and that includes AcDelco 0w-20 oil and AcDelco filter, labor, disposal, tire rotate and balance, as well as check and fill all fluids.

This last oil change I did it myself and spent $73 on just the oil and filter. However I did not cheap out on the oil or filter going for Mobil1 full synthetic 0w-20 and a more expensive Wix XP filter.

So to me, my dealership offers a good deal considering everything it includes. Plus I also sometimes get $10 off coupons in the mail I can apply to the oil change.

Spend the 8.00 more for Full Based synthetic motor oil and stay as far away from that ECORE filter as possible.

Dealer oil is now all full synthetic as of the first of this year. Update to the Dexos spec or something.

Yeah, I heard that on this forum awhile back. That means GM acknowledges the lower spec oil is causing carbon/coking issues for GDI due to it's higher heat and nature of the beast. GM dealers will continue to install semi-synthetic until inventories are spent and even if GM requires the newer full synthetic your local dealer tech will still find a way to install the something different! Good luck to all and enjoy that ECORE filter!

That's the plan, I always changed my own oil on past trucks. The only real reasons I changed my oil at the dealer was first because of the free oil changes, then because I needed my tires balanced almost every oil change because I had bad tires from the factory and it took me like a year of complaining and bitching to finally get them to put new tires on my truck.

What kind of oil are you running? Mobil1? 0w-20?

Yes, I am and using the 0w-20 Extended oil 15,000 mile jug....................I was not a fan at first when I found out the truck required it. Had dealer do one free change and they F'd it up.........Can't go back only for warranty work, I will do it myself again all the routine maintenance.

I can't stand the crap but it works and the mileage is freaking unbelievable. I just got a UOA back on 10k interval using 0W-20 Extended and they said, take it 12K! Yes, perfect I think that will be the max for me. I can't read the F'N dip-stick it's so thin! Dip-stick is awful design and awful location! Truck has to be ABSOLUTELY LEVEL or it's skewed but absurdly skewed in this truck front to back angle . So really no point to check it anywhere but your garage it seems?

I just start to consume after 9K which is fine by my standards because pouring that water in crankcase in Phoenix in my garage in 118 degree weather is comical how it does not disappear by the quarts at 5k is a mystery to me? Love the truck the ride MPG's. I guess I keep using 0W-20

I've been buying the 15,000 mile Extended Performance 0-20w from Wally World. I recently started buying Wix filters. But I get Mobil1 filters when I can't find a Wix.

I change the oil within a month after the OLM comes on. I don't get too worried about doing it right away since I'm down in the 8-10 thousand mile area.

Using Mobil 1 Extended Performance as well. Last oil change each 5 quart container was 28.68 at Wally World and a Mobil 1 Filter 12.99 at AutoZone. Wally World now has the filter for 3.00 less and bought 2 containers of Extended Performance at 25.67 each. Usually change my own oil but last time was too busy and paid my guy $10 to do it. He lubed truck as well so I gave him an additional $5.

Could you post your UOA of the M1 EP? Would love to see it!

I will attempt it!

Here is the 0W-20 Mobil extended UOA.........It's working for me.................I think the copper is GM specific and Camshaft bearing wear and maybe a little oil cooler but being 30K into it one would think the oil cooler would already be done shedding so I probably think mostly Camshaft bearings......I am cool with that!

umm....No, FERD lovers I am not about to spin a bearing that's a FERD THING

You are correct. GM uses a lot of copper in engine design, specifically in the form of brass. High copper early on is normal, and not only from cooler. it would only be a concern in respect to bearings if there was also elevated levels of lead and tin to go along with it. Bearings are multi metal.

Silicon seems a bit high for 10K miles. Getting some dirt in there. Using a high flow air filter?

Wear metal numbers pretty good. Should settle down a little over time. Still early in the game for that engine.

Isn't copper primarily from the wrist pin retainers in these engines?

Up here is brutal, I just bought Castrol Edge Extended performance and paid $35 a jug at 40% off. Mobile 1 extended performance filter was $12 on sale too... Worth it as then at least I know whats going in.

A month ago I picked up 8 quarts of 0w-20 full synthetic oil and a filter from the dealer for $32. Can't get any cheaper than that, especially while it's under warranty (wouldn't want to give them ANY reason to deny a warranty claim). Lots of talk about Mobil 1 this and on sale at Walmart that, but $32 for 8 quarts and a filter is dirt cheap, even if buying only the oil at the dealer and a better filter elsewhere.
