A bypass on a gasser is almost an unnecessary modification...gassers don't shed enough stuff or produce enough soot to really warrant their use.

 

The idea behind a bypass is to keep soot levels low and prevent small soot particles from coalescing into larger (and therefore, more abrasive) particles. On a diesel, they load the oil with soot from their combustion process and fuel type. On a gasser (unless you want the ah-ha factor or plan exceedingly long drain intervals) you wouldn't likely see any benefit in the use in a typical daily driver.

 

Especially with most common and/or popular bypass filters which are nothing more than a glorified oil filter with a reduced flow rate. Unless you have one that has depth to the media; you probably couldn't tell you were running one on a gasser, even with UOA's and particle counts.

 

I've ran about every style of bypass out there...anything from a Baldwin B50 (glorified oil filter), Amsoil BE (stack plate filter, actually an awesome filter), Amsoil EaBP (pleated filter or glorified oil filter), hydraulic filters like the Fleetguard HF6604, spun polyester (Oil Guard), rolls of toilet paper (Frantz and baby Gulf Coast), and rolls of paper towels (larger Gulf Coast).

 

I've spent my fair share of $$ on these things...still have a Frantz, a case of B50s, and a couple EaBP sitting on the shelf. In my opinion, you'd have better money spent trying to address the fuel dilution than abrasive particles in a gasser.

My dealer told me they are now using Dexos gen 2 full synthetic oil for all vehicles requiring Dexos oil, AND, with the full synthetic, an oil change is only necessary once a year unless high mileage or dusty/severe conditions.

Is there a way to tell if my motor oil needs to be changed or is running low?

• Yes. If equipped, your vehicle’s Oil Life Monitoring System will inform you when your motor oil needs to be changed, or, as a minimum, once every year.

 

Will using synthetic motor oil extend the change period as shown by the oil life monitor?

• No, the oil life monitor is not impacted by the type of oil used, it is only influenced by the amount and type of driving.
• Synthetic oil will, however, improve the protection provided to the engine by the lubricant.

You're not reading that correctly. The "once a year" is just the minimum requirements for low-mileage vehicles (less than 7500 per year or so). You still go by the OLM which will be every 6000-7500 for most people depending on driving conditions.

For this time around I'm going with the MicroGreen bypass filter. It's a little bigger and heavier and very well built with a 2 micron bypass.

 

 

I read over their stuff and took a look at some pricing. The full flow combined with a bypass is similar to what Fleetguard, Baldwin, and Wix did on a several of their commercial heavy duty filters. On those, I saw nothing to convince me it was worth it. Maybe the Microgreen will do better. And given the price comparison, the Microgreen is as cheap as many off the shelf filters. Causes me to wonder about the build quality. Now, I suppose if they are getting someone in Pakistan to build it for $1 an hour that could explain it. I would like to see some used oil samples from those using a regular filter and then samples after using the Microgreen and see if the difference is there. If I was motivated to do so, getting one and cutting it open and comparing to a good quality filter would be interesting.

i don't know why it isn't all on there site but I emailed them asking a couple questions and they shot back a response on efficiency rates, etc. it's about 1/4" longer and notably heavier in the hand. BITOG members that have cut them open have all found them to be built of high quality and using thicker met housings. UOAs looked good as does testimony from others. I don't know why their prices are as cheap as they are. Maybe they are running a surplus. Originally they were much more expensive for $11 to my door is a good get. From the videos on YouTube of dissection the bypass appears to do its job well. I can say that my pickup is quieter and smoother with the QSUD in it over the standard semi-synthetic they use.

Dealership charges me roughly $65 out the door and that includes AcDelco 0w-20 oil and AcDelco filter, labor, disposal, tire rotate and balance, as well as check and fill all fluids.

 

This last oil change I did it myself and spent $73 on just the oil and filter. However I did not cheap out on the oil or filter going for Mobil1 full synthetic 0w-20 and a more expensive Wix XP filter.

 

So to me, my dealership offers a good deal considering everything it includes. Plus I also sometimes get $10 off coupons in the mail I can apply to the oil change.

I promise you that the Wix filter you put in is miles and away a better filter than the junk PF63 junk ecore filter the dealer uses.
