:crackup: Not sure if you're a guy or girl but I guess you're not a very patient person then if you can't wait 1 minute for the ambient light sensor circuit to shut them off for you. Personally I find it works perfect the way it is. Meet to many non GM cars at dusk or later with no lights on. Daaaaaangerousssss in my opinion. Please don't take this personally I'm just observing here and just don't understand your need to pull out this spring in the switch. Let a sleeping lion sleep. I pray to GOD you don't hit a biker this summer because he didn't see your lights.

I'm with you on this one. What I don't get is with technology today why do we even have headlight switches anyway? It's simple when you start your truck all lights should be on regardless (for safety) when truck shuts of they do too. I can't tell you how many times I've been behind someone even at night were there daylight lights were on in front and nothing on in rear! Dangerous is right!!!

As a motorcycle rider DRL's have made me less noticeable now. That is a real safety issue, I'm not safely tucked in a steel cage like the average motorist..

Everyone is so used to seeing headlights on in the day they don't notice cycles anymore, for that matter other vehicles either.

Just wait when the Auto braking didn't stop the vehicle in time lawsuit and injury / death onslaught starts.

Driving a vehicle comes with personal responsibility, that includes operating all it's systems properly. Not being complacent automated drones.

If anything needs to be mandated it's better driver education and qualification / demonstration of having the ability and skills required to do it especially in a adverse situation.

Aren't DRLs mandatory on Bikes? Bikers ( Or as my wife call's them organ donors ) should embrace mandated DRLs on their cycles. Here in Canada it has been a welcomed enforcement. I now see these motorcycles and I have to admit, twice it happened to me cutting off a motor bike because I literally didn't see them, both times were close calls and thanks to to bikers ability I'm not a murderer. Both times I had the shakes for 30 minutes and both times I couldn't figure where they came from. I like DRLs, haven't had an other close call since.

DRL's have been required on bikes in the US for quite a while now. Over 25 yrs.

It's the optional DRL automotive use that masks the cyclist that bugs me.

If I turn it to "OFF" then let it spring back to the AUTO position my DRL's turn off. I have done it while in Drive and know it works that way (while sitting in traffic with my foot on the brakes I can see my lights go off in the reflection in the car in front of me). They stay off until I spring the knob to the left again to re-enable auto lights or until I shut off and restart the truck (which re-enables them too).

 

Mine works this way. If I manually turn them off, day or night they are off until a restart or switch is turned. 2012 Sierra. :happysad:

That's the way mine worked too diyer2. If you don't want to have to turn off your lights every time you start your truck than the spring mod is for you.

Old thread already but figured i would share my success with getting my 02 automatic headlights to stay off giving me full control and turn them on when i want them on.

Canadian truck, so almost all trucks that i know of have the auto headlights, annoying as f***,

I read a post where resistors were put in place, tried that, no go, tried the pulling the spring out of the headlight switch, no go, so i got to looking around and i remember a thread where people push ebrake in one-2 clicks for them to remain off, i didnt want to engage my ebrake so i looked at the bottom of the pedal when depressed the light goes out, so i unplugged the wire from ebrake assembly, put a spade connector on a wire, pushed it into the wire that plugs into the ebrake assembly, grounded that wire and voila, done.

No more auto headlights, takes 5 mins to do tops.

Finally got around to doing this today on my 2012 Sierra.

Was as easy as Lidd said.

 

Gently pry switches out of dash.

Unhook wire plugs.

Getting the back off the light switch to remove the spring was the hardest while trying not to damage the circuit board.

Took me 15 mins.

Switch now works like days of old.

 

DRL's are off on start up.

Why removed a safety option that may save a life is beyond me. Hope the person that doesn't see you coming isn't a relative or a close friend. Never drive faster than your guardian angel can fly.

That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Ever drive on 2-lane blacktop? You see DRL 2x further down the road than no headlights (hence the reason they are mandated in Canada). I see motorcycle riders with DRL, and it makes 100% difference if you pull out to pass someone. A lot of bikers pick black outfits + black bikes that blend perfectly into the asphalt. no DRL would just be more organ donors for those riders...

The topic is DRL's on cars/trucks NOT bikes. Do a re-read SLOWLY of the entire post. I'm talking about NOT being seen on my bike due to 4 wheelers with DRL's.

Sounds like you need to lay down the doobie and actually read. Where was I mentioning 4 wheelers? Nowhere.... I'm talking on driving on a 2-lane highway, meeting motorcycle riders. You CLAIM that DRL on motorcycles makes you less safe. Your words not mine buddy.....

 

I'm still confused why anyone wants to disable safety equipment. You really think GM wastes money engineering lights that turn on with the key because they want less profits? Think about it....

Old thread, old problem, new user, bear with me.

 

I have a Canadian version 2013 Sierra and I need to have the ability to turn off the headlights/DRL's when in gear.  Before certain people get wrapped around the axle I do not plan to drive on the road with them off but need to be able to turn them off when driving into hunting areas and when using a boat ramp in the dark.  It is a courtesy thing and it is a big deal.  You blind the people waiting to put in in some places you return to your rig with the trailer detached or your valve stems removed.  Plus I am not in Canada so not the law to have them and frankly I am freaking tired of changing light bulbs so often. So there is my answer as to why I want to disable them.

 

So, the switch mod will not work that I have read, and yes turning it by hand to the off position does nothing when in gear.  What is the fix, what are the options?  Fuse removal? Jumper wires? Remove something else?

    • can you tell if the reader is actually trying to get codes, and the pcm is reporting none, or is your reader just silently failing because it's not communicating with the pcm?
    • Any joy with this truck seems to be short-lived.   The CEL for P0172 ("bank 1" too rich) is now "intermittent".   I'm not sure where to check, or re-check, and my energy to keep chasing problems with junk is wearing thin. The P0172 seems to set as I'm coming to a stop, completely off the throttle, when fully warm. At least, that's what it's done the 3? times it's set.   Everything appears normal on the scanner EXCEPT long term fuel trim. There's only one bank on this vehicle because it's an OBD 1.5 with only one upstream O2 sensor. At idle, it's around -16.4% and will dip to -18% occasionally at idle or off-throttle. LTFT approaches 0 when throttle is held at 2500rpm. Short term appears normal, much closer to zero all the time. The LTFT tells me the engine is running rich at idle but compensating at higher load. But, why?   The EVAP purge valve doesn't appear to be leaking/sucking fuel vapor continuously. Is it sticking just as I come to a stop and the engine is choking on fuel vapor and sets the P0172? But that doesn't explain the persistently negative LTFT. Disconnecting the purge valve doesn't seem to make any difference.   I suppose that leaves another dang issue with the fuel injector. A leaking fuel pressure regulator, a new leak in the spider, or a leaking fuel injector/poppet valve I didn't see, or a small crack in one of the spider legs.   The vacuum line leading to the fuel pressure regulator doesn't have raw fuel in it. It doesn't even smell like fuel when it's pulled off, not until you suck air through it, then you can tell it leads to a fuel component. I'd consider that normal? Nothing is signaling this is a FPR issue from the outside, at least.   The oil smells like fuel but it's not building volume. I've noticed most oil in most engines smells like fuel to some degree so it's hard to say if the smell is an issue or not. Or if the engine just still smells like fuel because the crankcase was full of it a few hundred miles ago. But it's been changed twice since that original issue of the leaking fuel line dumping fuel into the intake.   Patience is running very thin. Every win seems to be accompanied by two steps backwards, or another issue that leads to removing at least the top half of the intake manifold. Enough! LOL
    • First off you mentioned "Toyo Says" and then gave the pressures 45/50, was this some person at the tire shop that pulled those numbers out of his head ?   Now of course I can't know your exact axle weights front and rear, however I have much the same pickup as yourself other than not knowing your starting weight as per the pounds the truck rolled out of the factory at due to the options yours did or didn't come with or what you have added beyond the extra tire weight. The correct way to know 100% where a person is at is by weighing each axle with the typical weight the vehicle is driven with and that means taking into account passengers and making sure you figure in a full tank of fuel and a little grace for whatever you may put in the bed "groceries" !    I am looking at and not that it really matters as all the tire companies use the same charts anyway, but I am looking at the comprehensive Toyo tire chart in the section that your tire falls under and I know it sounds confusing but your tire is not an LT metric tire like your factory tire but instead because its a standard inch measured tire its under a different category called an LT floatation series tire. That makes a difference as LT metric tires they don't want to see run below 35 psi at highway speed where as with the LT floatation series it can be run down to 25 psi on the highway as long as the weight on the said size of tire is agreeable with or less than that minimum 25 psi. It blows many people away that how is this physically possible, an empty truck for one thing and larger tires with the same size wheel diameter have a lot more air volume so they can carry the same weight as the smaller tire with less air pressure.    So my truck, I have the stock 275/65R20 wheels and tires and I have a bit of weight in the box with a bak flip cover and a rubber bed mat and some tools and spare gas. The front of my gas truck weighs a bit more than some trucks of the similar spec due to double batteries and alternators. However with full fuel and just me in the truck I am weighted such that I can run 40 front and 35 rear and so that is what I have done since day one.    If I base your truck at or slightly below the weight of my truck, in theory with your tires going by the tire chart you might be right around a minimum of 30 pounds front and 25 pounds rear. Of course that would hit pretty much minimum cold inflation pressure one could run with that tire size and a near empty truck. If you have access to an accurate weigh scale to do individual front and rear axle weights I would suggest you do that and make sure your topped up with fuel and whatever else in the truck before you weigh it and then you will have a great starting point to work off of and figure out what your bare minimum pressures are you can safely run. If you do much in the way of hot weather high speed driving, bumping up a bit for a safety margin is never a bad idea but just depends on what type of driving you do. I will include the Toyo chart and the floatation series sizes start on page 31. Without a doubt at these pressures I am speculating at minimum wise for your truck, it would most certainly ride very different then it did when you were using 55 lb front and rear.     https://www.toyotires.com/media/pxcjubjs/application_of_load_inflation_tables_20200723.pdf
    • Take an automotive stethoscope to the vacuum pump. Iirc those tick as well. 
    • This landing is worse than most. Patchy blacktop with washouts, soft gravel/sand at bottom that washes out with every heavy rain. I tell everyone to put it in 4WD. A lot of them think they can pull out their trailer in 2WD. They end up digging a hole and then putting it in 4WD.  The lake is a pristine lake and has a lot of money on it. There are several wake boats and lot of large tritoons.
