Yup, I work for gm and am in Canada, you know where half the population that has 4x4 leaves it in 4x4 for half the year, every year.....

You know how many transfer case jobs come through the shop a month? Maybe 1... Maybe and we have 22 mechanical techs and sell trucks like crazy and know for a fact tons of people as soon as a snowflake just the ground are in 4x4 till it's gone.

You guys are out to lunch. You read stupid story's on the net and believe everything you read.... Or have "a friend" who drove 3 kms and needed a complete overhaul of his 4x4 system lol.

I didn't read anything on the net, I helped pull the transfercases out of those Suburbans...I towed the one to the shop that grenaded.

 

Unlike "up north" (where I would think they would know how to drive in snow), we have a lot of bare pavement between storm events...that's what killed those transfercases.

Just change the transfer case fluid for some added piece of mind. I take it GM has still not added a 4WD light into the dash/cluster for push button/knob transfer case switches. Yes I know the floor mounted transfer case shifters have a light in the dash. This is what we have to deal with in the GMT-900s (2007-2013) Aside from the little pencil tip yellow light, there is no other visual indicator that the truck is in 4WD. STOOOOOOOOOPID on GM's part.

I accidentally drove my 07 SLE 400 miles on the highway in 4wd....never noticed until I turned into my driveway. Had the truck for 5 years after that and no problems.

I would say there is more of a problem if these trucks cannot handle driving on bare pavement without grenading as opposed to discussing whether a few hours on the road in 4WD will hurt it. When did trucks stop becoming trucks?

They didn't, they hold up just fine, just some of the guys on here are absolutely clueless lol

4WD high locks front and rear tires together. Fact. When making turns, tires rotate at different speeds. Fact. When turning on dry pavement in 4WD, tires are forced to turn at the same speed despite not being able to. Fact. This puts wear at one of three locations: tire contact patch on the road, front differential, or the transfer case. Fact. There will be wear somewhere. Fact. Which one wears the most would have to be the weakest link at the time, subject to several variables. Is the truck going to grenade? Probably not. Is there extra wear on some part of the system? Yes. Is it measurable at this time? Probably not. There's no extra wear until turns are made, which on the highway are minimal.

The real issue is what was he doing on his phone? Hopefully, he pulled over and stopped.

If you werent driving faster than 75-80 (really that's technically too fast but not in reality) & weren't taking turns mostly driving straight then it shouldn't be a problem. I mean there are guys going 100+mph in 4wd HI running WAYYYY more power to the wheels than what you're putting down when doing runs down the dragstrip....I really think the issue on dry pavement is when you're turning.

 

FWIW - I regularly drive long distances in 4hi in snow storms @ 65-75mph (of course I realize that's in the snow)

My truck stayed in 4 wheel drive for the past 6 months. Living in Alaska isn't easy, but the truck handled everything fine. Chevy trucks are very popular here. They work great.

I did almost the same thing on my test drive.

We got a foot of snow the day before and the sales guy used 4HI to pull the truck out. When I jump in I did not notice where the switch was set. The roads were just wet at this point so I drove 20 miles and hit speeds of 85 before I pulled into a gas station to turn around and knew what it was the moment I felt it. It only had 6 miles on it when I took it. Almost picked a different truck because of it. But after a quick talk with a service guy I know and trust I was not worried anymore. Like everyone else said as long as you don't make it a habit you are fine.

I do wish they had a light in the gauge cluster that came on when in anything other then 2WD. I switch the gauge display to the Off Road page when I go into 4WD to help me remember.

Thank you for posting this topic. I recently bought a 2017 Silverado about 60 miles from home. It wasn't until I reached my home town when I realized that the truck was in 4 wheel auto the entire time. I immediately put it back into 2wd and turned down the radio like a crazy person to listen to the truck for anything. I worried about it for a couple of days and always wondered if anyone has done the same thing. It's been a month now and the truck is running beautifully. All the info in this post is very interesting.

 

My second post ever on a forum.

    • He is not saying that an SAE *W20 will have more viscosity than a *W40 due to MORE VII polymers. He is saying that although multiple *W40 may post in the PDS the same or similar 100 C and 150 C viscosities that the blenders choice of modifier TYPE and AMOUNT to get his chosen base to grade will not give identical real world viscosities in shear and at temperature. All will pass the SII test but not all will pass the 100 C HTHS (unpublished value) testing the blender does and relies on to get the required by law "percentage improvement' referenced to his last great work.    Tis the problem with the lie. Once told others are required to support it. 
    • I have a `25, 1500 that auto sets on incline. Never knew that at first. I have the electronic shifter. Just think if it didn`t do that? Unlike a mechanical shift that you can muscle out of park, how would you get this thing out? That would be a problem.   What I found out later is, I don`t have to push the button to release. Just put it in gear.   Setting parameters? Don`t know if it`s possible.

I usually set the parking brake (habit) when on flat ground for typical driving.    When backed down on the launch ramp to launch the boat and I place gear selector into Park, the parking brake activates automatically. My second nature is to set parking brake manually and noticed I was turing the parking brake off.  The parking brake appears to be setting itself automatically.   I looked all over my owner's manual and only found references to being on an incline and manually setting parking brake, or at times parking brake will be auto engaged, but nothing specific to my situation.    When is the parking brake automatically engaged?  Under what specific circumstances?  Can the auto set parameters be changed?     I like the auto set feature.  It would be nice if always engaged when shifted into Park and released when shifted out of Park (like my wifes 2025 RAV4).   Thanks!

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
    • Can it still be Assembled II?   Viscosity on the decline by various means. Heat on the rise making that worse. Engine RPM in the tank. Smaller motors with more boost trying to emulate an electric motor. Full torque, zero rpm. Then we will triple the OCI. Argh.    But wait....there is more. LSPI has pushed a shift from Ca to Mg and as that cost more PLUS the run to lower sulfur compounds the TBN is moving in the wrong direction for the increased OCI's demanded.    That not being enough to placate a demand for a parameter they can't measure the other sulfur bearing compounds are also under attack. That would be zinc and phosphorus sulfonate compounds. To some degree those are being replaced with boron esters and others, i.e. titanium ect. All of which have shorter service lives. And there there is the "Secrete Sauce" marketing for AW adds that 'Can't be detected by UOA's" but trust me because I (the blenders) never ever lie.    Spoiler alert; ALL additives are sacrificial! Smaller amounts of the old blended with less robust versions of the new do not equal longer service lives. So what are the blenders recommending? Wait for it.......   MOVING THE GOAL POSTS! OMG      Let's declare the long standing TAN/TBN crossover irrelevant and tell people that soot is a great 'graphite' based lubricant which can aid tribo films. Wait, what? Let's declare that the standards used for oxidation and nitration were to conservative and can be expanded. Let's tell them that because GDI fuel dilution, although being a VISCOSITY KILLER and an acid generator is actually okay because we have better base oils that limit viscosity failure limits. (Said knowing this is measured in fractions of a centipoise and in bases not commonly used in shelf oils)   Lying from the heart is not just the new normal but we have a public, a very young public, that is so ignorant of the facts and so sure of their "RESEARCH" into AI driven models base in regurgitated  instead of scientific research based unvarnished, peer reviewed FACTS that the incoming guard is loosing their grip on reality and the OEM's are tickled pink while the blends bend the knee.    You have an ever limited set of tools to work with. And sooner or later those will be taken from you as the API and the EPA strangle the last remaining fluids from the system. What you have left is your wits. If you care to use them.    At some point in the very near future it will not longer be possible to do "What is best for the machine", and be replaced with "The best you have access too". You WILL be rewarded with half the life and twice the cost. That isn't that hard to predict.
