shoregmc55 Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 So Im going to put the 5100 on my 2014 sierra. Im wondering about the installation process on the front. Im sure this is on the Bilstein thread but i don't have time to read through 60 pages. Is there any videos or pic of installation. I have not been able to find anything good for the 2014 model. the main concern is do I need a spring compressor?
newdude Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 Yes you will need a spring compressor. Be careful if you are tackling this yourself.
michigan2500hd Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 I just had this done.. Didn't feel like messing with the springs. The shop that did it actually specialized in alignments so it was one stop. Sent from my E6810 using Tapatalk

I know it varies from shop to shop but just so i have a ball park.

fondupot Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 Yes you need a spring compressor. If you are mechanically inclined you can do it yourself. But be careful, spring compressors are serious business.

I am mechanically inclined but don't know if i want to deal with the stress and fear of messing with a compressor..... hahah

camcamaro1991 Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 I was a tech... you learn from failures/doing/experimenting, how can you learn if you never try? you need to get into the mentality that if someone else can do it, I can do it... to a certain level or degree. (that being said there is a certain art or finesse to working on vehicles/using tools/etc....) Good way is to prime your system, watch some youtube videos (be careful, there are so many amateurs) use critical thinking, if looks unsafe, its b/c it is. Good dose of common sense goes along ways. I have uncompressed/compressed many sets of springs over the years, very easy. Knowing which spring compressor is most the trouble, one size does not fit all here. Next week I am going to start working on nuclear fusion reactors. carry on! lol

I have a complex where if someone know more about something than me, I need to know what they do. I dont need to know than them, but i need to know as much as them
Silverado Steve Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 I took mine to an auto hobby shop where you can do the work yourself and if you get stuck, they have mechanics on hand to help you out. They compressed both my front struts for $15.
Lgetz Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 Just use common sense and if you feel over your head have a professional shop handle it. Not worth getting hurt while trying to compress the springs.
spartantx117 Posted April 29, 2017 Posted April 29, 2017 I just did my fronts this last weekend on the top setting. It was a learning curve on one side.... It took me probably 1 1/2 hours. the next side I had done in 45 min -1 hour... And I didn't really rush. I used spring compressors from Autozone and my compressor with them. Never did really feel unsafe. I was going to have it done local but I had one shop argued with me, one shop change the price when I showed up so I just decided to do it myself. Going to have it aligned tomorrow.
Ezekiel2517 Posted May 11, 2017 Posted May 11, 2017 4wheel parts did mine for $350, including the shocks. It was worth it to not have to jack with them. Pulling the shocks assembly is not hard, nor is re-installation. Installing the shock is the trick and just not worth the effort if you can get it done under $200 for the labor.
