I have mine set to the last 400 miles (17.9 high). My truck got over 21 as a high in The last 50 miles.

Yeah the short distances really mean very little. Got to get a few tanks run through to get a good average. I do a lot of city driving stop and go and still kind of getting broken in so should get better. Next long highway run I will reset the trip meter and see if I can get around 30mpg I mean heck it is just a 6000lb behemoth shaped like a brick in the front it should get excellent mpg??? right?

I regularly get around 20 on the interstate (80 mph limit in WY), 22-23 on the state highways (70 here in WY), and my maximum is 26.2 at 55 mph. That was on a state highway when I was stretching the bit of gas I had left in my tank.

 

Granted I use 91 octane, nearly all of that being E0 DinoCare gas, though I get decent mileage with E10 from Loaf 'N Jug. Still, not bad for a 6.2L V8 :D

I drive 40 miles one way to work in central texas, the hill country. If I use cruise every chance I get at 2-4 miles over the speed limit I am around 16+ mpg. That is with stop lights and hills and a little highway driving. When on the open highway I can get 18-20+ if I don't drive to fast.

 

These guys getting 20,22,24+ mpg must be cruising mostly at 40-60 mph on flat roads. Or 60-70 on good flat highway with NO lights.

I rarely drive on the expressway, even I do v is only a few exits between on and off. I have the Bilstein leveling shocks and a hybrid mud/ all terrain tire that's 33.1" tall on 20" wheels.

I don't hot rod often but every once in awhile I like to feel the 6.2 power. The OP's millage sounds low for a 5.3 because my DIC rarely dips below 16.6 and usually is 18.6 - 20.8 ish. Of course that is the computer figuring the mpg as I havn't done a hand calc yet.

I checked my best mpg this morning.

Last 400 miles 17.9

Last 50 miles 22.7

Last 25 miles 24.9

 

I run LT falken wildpeaks and a front bilstein lvl.

what ever happened to the good old hand calcs? the DIC isn't always accurate. mine constantly says my max mpg was 25mpg. it was probably when I was going down a big hill with a tailwind. when I hand calc each tank I consistently get 17-18mpg. my DIC tells me 19-20 mpg average so its 1-2 mpg off always

Are you resetting your "trip" when you get gas? I always do and compare it to hand calc. My numbers are always within 1 mpg at the most. Yes, the DIC always guesses high, but its pretty close for me.

 

Of course your all time best MPG was under ideal conditions. if you don't like being reminded of that one day, then just reset it.

It depends on the road conditions. I notice when going in mountains vs flat lands, I get different readings. I am running 6.5 lift with Toyo MT 33x12.5x20, Airaid Jr and K&N air filter with airbox mod. Highways I set cruise control at 65, avg is between 17.5 to 18.1 mpg. Locals is 15.5 to 16 mpg. I am not heaving on the gas or brakes.

That's what I do w/ mine. The DIC is usually 1-2mpg off from what I actually get. Usually, but not this last time. My last tank full was 21.6 vs. the DIC telling me I got 26.2. DIC is always optimistic.

I have a 2017 Silverado 1500 ltz with 5” lift kit and 33” tires and a k&n cold air intake plus cat back magnaflow exhaust..! 
I am averaging 12.7 mpg..??! 
Is that accurate?  
Or do I have to get it turned??

please help with a reply??

If the 33's are LT tires and like a mud style tire, I could see that.


Getting it tuned won't do you much, 33's are still a factory size tire on these trucks and you'd only really be correcting your speedo and minor shift points. But a tune still isn't a bad thing, they make the trucks drive a lot better.

 

The 5in lift is killing fuel mileage and if you drive over 65-70mph, it only gets worse. A good "avg" on a truck that is stock that does 50/50 highway/city it probably going to be in that 17-18mpg range.

    • Thanks - I wasn't quite caffeinated this morning. 2:1 makes sense, turning the crankshaft 360 degrees will turn the cam 180 degrees, and had I done that, the cam's dot would be at 6 and the crank's at 12 again.   I went ahead and took the sprocket off anyway, aligned everything dot-to-dot including the balance shaft just for s&g. I'm glad I did because I discovered no Loctite on the timing sprocket bolts. Maybe it's not required, but at only 20 ft-lb torque spec, those bolts aren't in there very tight. Cleaned and reassembled with some thread locker and torqued.   A general observation: Less is more with RTV. If a little doesn't stop a leak, a LOT probably won't, either. RTV is thinly veiled revenge, in a tube...      
    • The timing marks are ok, that is #1, you can turn it over until they line up and it won't change anything, the crankshaft turns twice for every camshaft revolution, I have always set up SB Chevs as your pic shows using a straight edge
    • Someone's been here before.... There is a receipt for a 3-piece timing set, purchased earlier this year.   Is this picture something, or, nothing?   I have the timing cover off and my crank is perfectly TDC and the keyed gear's locating mark is dead on 12 o'clock.   The cam gear locating mark is also at 12 o'clock. Now, I'm not an expert, but all the install guides say the two locating marks should meet and be perfectly aligned when installing a timing set. The mark on the crank should be dead on 12:00 and the cam gear's mark should be dead on 6:00, and both marks should be perfectly vertically aligned.   I believe the timing gear is keyed or has a dowel that ensures it can only be installed on the cam in one position, so I have to believe the cam is out of phase somehow. At the very least, with a triangular bolt pattern, it can only be installed in one of 3 different positions.   Before I pulled the front cover, the truck was running alright, no service engine soon lights except an occasional P0172 / rich condition. Timing -16 timing at idle (should be +16), and total -35% fuel trim, two conditions I haven't been able to figure out.   In related news, my injector tested pretty well, wasn't leaking, but I had it rebuilt anyway, and it's on it's way back to me.         Along with this discovery, the good and bad:   Good: The oil pan seal appears undamaged.   Bad: -The timing cover has been reused, and the positioning dowels have been broken. That could explain some of the leaking. -Some kind of white paste or grease was used to try to seal the oil pan seal and timing cover (since wiped off..). -Then, someone globbed silicone all over the front of the cover and also buried the ckp sensor in it. But, they didn't put any inside the cover or use RTV to try to seal the oil pan seal with the timing cover (good).
    • The guy that owns K&P filters last I checked in with him has over 300,000 miles on his Dodge base Hemi using his own 35 micron absolute stainless mesh filter from its first oil change.    The GM study I've posted a dozen times shows the relationship in engine life based in multiples of base units, not miles or years. That is the base unit is the number of miles the motor ran using the reference filter efficiency.    The above two paragraphs dismantle anecdotal arguments IF one changes oil often enough to prevent particle formation and the motor is in otherwise good shape. That is not full of silica (no air filter) or suffering a metallurgical issue that is not part of the lubrication discussion. Poor heat treat in example.   Data from UOA's I've reviewed from more than a few engines can show remarkably broad variations in oil cleanliness using the exact same filter over the course of an engines life.     Lastly there is the common sense of it. Wear debris WILL circulate the engine BEFORE it ever sees a filter in route to that filter and WILL harm the pump which NEVER sees filtered oil.    Alpha question then becomes, given the facts, how long do you believe is a reasonable service life from a vehicle you are certain you will not pass down? That is the junk yard will be it's resting place when you're done with it? (the moral issue most don't care about).    Omega question is then how diligent are you prepared to be in general mechanical, air & oil maintenance? Preventing particulates and keeping them sufficiently dilute; preventing the precursors from generation, amalgamation and precipitation.    If I get a good look at the engine bay of a vehicle I have a fair idea of the owners commitment to the inside of the power train. That 30 micron WIX is still more efficient than a sieve.                 
    • It also depends on what criteria someone is using for “best” when talking filters.  Are we going off best efficiency?   Best quality/QC?  Etc. because the two may not mutually exclusive.
