Bigger battery or Second battery

Recommended Posts

So I currently have an Optima Yellow top d-34 which has 620 cold cranking amps. Now I know I should have bought a larger yellowtop at the time however my factory battery took a dump in the parking lot of AutoZone and this was the best battery they had.

Given that I have been slowly adding additional auxilary items to my truck I'm trying to decide if it is time to go ahead and get a larger yellowtop (750cca) or possibly a second one.

The truck seems fine when driving but there are certainly times where it struggles to start especially if I already have the lights and stereo on.

I plan to do the big three this weekend and see if that helps but wanted to see what other folks were doing as they started to add more and more electrical load to their trucks.

Any recommendations from the team?

Additional load items:

Morimoto 50w hid s = 100w

Rigid Industries SAE = 44w

Rigid Industries SRQ2 Hi/Low = 68w

Led Tailgate Strip = 3w

JL Audio XD400/4 = 400W

JL Audio 300/1 = 300W

I should add has anybody found a high output alternator for their 2014 or newer I've looked at a lot of web sites and nobody seems to make one yet

Grab an xs power battery and that should do plenty. If not add I more.

I will never ever touch an optima. A battery I feel is something if you doe d a little more you'll be happier. I have xs batteries in all my vehicles except 1 and it's getting one soon

I have never heard of that kind of battery but 550 bucks is a bit steep lol

IMO and posting this again.

A battery is a throw away item and I buy according to price middle of the road. One of the best places to buy is Costco, they extend the warranty.

Also I never understood why people let a battery die and then replace it. While it's dying you work your alternator hard trying to keep it charged. Getting stranded or having to replace a battery in the cold doesn't work for me. I avoid jump starting also which is good IMO with all the electronics in the newer vehicles.

I replace our batteries every 4 years. Never been stranded or replaced one in the cold. :happysad:

You.get what you pay for

And if I'm not mistaken they're only 350

I was checking out XS batteries web site. Under the search for application guide and for the "OEM Application" they only go up to the year 2012. Someone needs to update their website lol.

I'll say this, my 2015 original battery took a dump with absolutely no warning at 39k miles on a Saturday morning. I jumped it and went to Interstate Batteries only to find out they were closed on Saturday so I ended up going to Walmart who tested the original and sure enough it had a dead cell. I purchased a Walmart battery as a replacement... I've never had a problem with a Walmart battery, and the stores are everywhere.

Sad part is the truck is only 2 1/2 years old and the origianl battery should have lasted longer than that...

I'm a BIG believer in AGM batteries, I'm running one in my ISF and one in my Silverado. The one in the ISF is a Bosh from Pep Boys. The one in the truck is from NAPA.

My truck did the same at about the same miles. I think my two previous trucks with Delco batteries did about the same. My Camaro (same exact) battery died about 37,000. I think Delco has perfected battery life design.

According to Optima the D34 Yellowtop (2 versions) has 750 CCA - not sure where you got your 620 CCA specs.

I've had good success with the Bosch AGM H7 - you can buy online at Pep Boys (usually with a coupon) and then pick up at the store - $165 after coupon. Interstate AGM is a good choice too

For those who have personally replaced their batteries, any special instructions or precautions? Besides the + and - leads there are 3 others. I want to retain my settings and I already have the cig outlet battery device for that. My battery is a little over 4 y/o and I will be replacing it soon.....thanks.
