So, if I HAD to sell.....

In another recent thread regarding trading for a different vehicle, I mentioned that my primary reason for owning a truck is the dependability in severe terrain and environmental conditions that I require of a vehicle. However, I would prefer to have an SUV-style body for my needs with the all-enclosed cargo area. Just for the sake of discussion, is there an SUV or crossover that you guys would think would be as durable as a full size truck? To go ahead an narrow it down a little bit, the Tahoe/Yukon/Expedition/Sequoia/Armada are far too expensive, and the CR-V (Another extremely reliable SUV) is too small. What comes to mind for y'all?

I had good luck with Hyundais. My last one was a Santa Fe, you can get good a good warranty and all wheel drive and close to 300HP. The best part is the price. I've had 4 Hyundais, still have two one is 11 years old still going strong the other is 7 years old.

I'm pondering the same thing as my commute has now tripled. I'm looking at the new Subaru Crosstrek. The biggest drawback is it is way low on power by every review, but size and functionality are perfect.

4Runners are nice, but they get the same if not worse mpgs than what our trucks get.

Dorkweed's suggestion of a camper shell (canopy) is a relatively inexpensive way to give you many of the benefits of an enclosed suv while still enjoying the advantages of a pickup. I often refer to my truck as a "poor-man's Suburban". (However if I had 20 or 30 thousnd extra dollars to buy a Suburban, I'd most likeky spend it on a more deluxe pickup!)

A guy I work with has one, his biggest complaint is power.

The small SUVs tend not to have low range, very much ground clearance, or differential options, so offroad is limited in my opinion.

A Jeep wrangler (4dr) would be another option. But a canopy on a 4dr pickup would be my choice.

And from my experience renting small SUVs for work, the Nissan and Hyundai have the worst mileage...Toyota Rav4 are middle of the road...Ford Escape is the best. Only the Escape eclipsed a FULLSIZED 5.7l Dodge Ram in fuel mileage and none were as fun to drive. So trying for better mileage is questionable with these smaller SUVs.

I like the look of the new 4runners, but they are in no way cheap, and the dash is almost the same as the 06 my wife had (toy doesnt know how to do a truck dash). You could get an LS Tahoe for same price right now. Also kind of narrow as I posess manshoulders. We never had any issues with it. There is also a jeep of course for off road...

Yea, I completely agree, the dash/tech in the Toyotas is definitely outdated. I almost signed a deal on a 4Runner before getting my 17 Silverado. Also, the MPGs are pretty bad as well, not a huge deciding factor for me, but if you drive a lot, they'd be pretty rough on the wallet for a SUV. The 4Runner also felt very top heavy when I test drove it, like it was too tall and narrow, but maybe it just takes some getting used to. Can't argue with the dependability though, I see more 90s 4runners than maybe any kind of vehicle in my area, they seem to last forever. Also, I'm not a Jeep guy, but the new grand cherokees look pretty good and I'm sure are very capable off-road. Like the other guys, I think a camper shell would be a nice compromise as well. I'd just go test drive a few SUVs and see if anything really stands out for you, that's my $.02.
